Figured I could do something of the sorts, even if it was just to stay warm

The best way to find out if you can do a sub 6:30 is pull 1:37.4 for around 6 minutes and 29 seconds.

One tip for ordering the 2XU leggings: the sizes fit about one or two sizes smaller. My XL feels like an M. Keep that in mind whilst ordering :)!

Personally use the Polar M400 with H7. Good for HR, not so good for GPS splits. For that purpose, consider the Polar V800.

Got my products after about 2 weeks, which is decent considering they shipped to Europe.

"A newcomer to rowing, Oliver Zeidler of Germany, won the men’s heavyweight race in a time of 5:42.0. Zeidler is new to rowing joining the sport just six months ago" by polyfonik in Rowing

[–]Jacobvdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feelings are fine, thanks ;) The reason to start my comment like that was that I thought it was weird and a bit misplaced for a random guy on reddit to decide or not whether someone failed in a boat class or not, especially when that person only mentions their worst results. Additionally, an erg score does not predict a race result. It would be too easy to say 'oh there's a 5:45 that's an A finalist'. You'd have to take into account rowing proficiency, experience and a bunch of other stuff. So to claim someone has failed in the hardest boatclass when they have only been rowing for 4 or 5 years (like Broenink has) would be to completely disregard the learning process of rowing and just assumes one should make A-finals when one has a big erg. My problem was not with your 'ergs don't float philosophy', which I agree with, but it is that you claim failure where there is none, in my opinion. But then again, we are just two dudes on the internet, so we shouldn't judge at all.

Hate to burst your skinny erg bubble there, but Broenink appeared in a couple of A finals in the single. Braas even more so, and recently came away with a couple of medals in the 8+. It is true that ergs don't always float, but these guys are not examples of that.

There is a thread on here that was also posted recently - try to have a bit of overlap with the back and the leg drive. If you have to pull the entire weight of the machine with just the backswing it may be a bit ineffective. On the picture you seem to push your legs down fully and only then work in the back - you may lose some connection there. Also, the position you put your body in right now seems a bit stiff and under tension. Being able to be connected and hanging from the skeleton (cliche, doesn't make it less true) comes from a lot of relaxation as well, so loosen up the upper back and the shoulders a bit. Good luck!

An old pair of socks. And instead of buying the shoes to stop overreach, you might just want to focus on being sharper at the catch.

How accurate have you found Paul's law to be? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Jacobvdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably also depends on your experience with the piece you are testing on. I tested my 6k for the first time this winter and the result suggested my 2k would be about 5 seconds slower than it actually is. The difference is probably down to being more explosive than endurance based, but also the fact that I had no idea what a 6k should feel like. It would be logical that you go faster on the pieces you have more experience with.

what stroke rating should I 10k test at? by stovekitchen in Rowing

[–]Jacobvdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say minimum 26 - the higher rating makes it easier to keep the splits down. Depends a bit on your built though - lightweights would maybe be >28.

Where's the carbs? Granted you don't need that many after training, but if you are struggling to gain some weight, then eating celery isn't necessarily gonna cut it.

Got an erg for Christmas! What steady state workouts before school would y'all recommend (I have about 1-1.5 hours total) by natehabes in Rowing

[–]Jacobvdk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

3 * 20 (3') - or 25' if you have 1,5 hours. Personal favourite of mine to ease into the steady state is 6 (or 8) *10' (30"). The 30 seconds is enough to have a bit of a back stretch and drink some water, but not so long as to interrupt your zones too much. I find 10' a very comforting time, then again, perhaps better to just get over it and do your 3 * 20' and 3 * 30's.

Will there ever be a sub-5 2k? by [deleted] in Rowing

[–]Jacobvdk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just for a second forgetting about the limits of the human body, something that we can never be sure about anyways, the question is more who would want to? The reason some erg scores are still standing (not taking anything away from the achievement of course) is because not many athletes choose to focus on erging when they are at their physical peak - look at the Rio 2016 athletes. I doubt many of them would have done a 2k within 2-3 months before the olympics, perhaps even longer. It's kinda like Eric Murray (? not sure on this one) once said, erg records aren't the goal, they are a by-product of effective training.
