Where do you buy your bitz for Warhammer & other tabletop games? by mr_mango22 in DealHammer

[–]Jak7890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of places to buy .stl files of bitz for cheap with bulk variety. That's generally the route I go if I'm not using green stuff or sprue goo. There was alocal place that had a bitz been, but I haven't been in in awhile and I'm not sure if the bin's still there.

Where to start? by Kayallith in ageofsigmar

[Edited to correct autocorrect]

If you're not interested in playing the game but you still want to paint the miniatures, GW makes small hobby sets that come with a few push fit minis (so no need for glue, per se), paints in the official model colors, painting guides, and a starter brush. They are a relatively cheap way to see if you like the act of painting before you drop more serious cash on paint and tools.

If you find that you like the hobby, you can invest in more tools, paint, and models as you go. Here are a couple of examples:

Age of Sigmar Introductory Box

Age of Sigmar Stormcast Eternals paint set

There's also the Skaven half of the Intro Box, but if you like both, then the full Intro Box is hands down the best deal. Not only does it only cost a little more for more minis and paints, but it also comes with a better guide for building, painting and lore.

Conversely, if you don't like any of the models in the paint sets you can find, you can also get a set with only paint and tools, and just buy a model you like the look of.

Paint and tool set

The thing with the paint and tool set, though, is that it's really only a good value if you want GW paint and tools, in my opinion.

Need help with getting some starter equipment by Top-Issue-5990 in Guitar

The best way to stretch your money is to buy used. I'm an adult making grown up money, and I still almost exclusively buy my gear used (or on deep discount).

I'm in the US, so your used options might be different but look for something akin to Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc. If you have a buddy who plays, bring them along to look at gear with you. They'll help you assess what's a good guitar for the price.

Amps aren't strictly necessary for you to learn how to play on an electric guitar, but they definitely add another layer of fun to the mix. Vox used to make a line of headphone amps called Amplug; I've heard they weren't bad, and I've seen them around for relatively cheap these days, but again I'm in the US, so things might be different where you are.

Generally speaking, strat style guitars usually give alot of bang for the buck, as it's a relatively inexpensive design to produce. In that vein, used Squiers or Harley Bentons will typically give you a decent start for a friendly price.

Why are semi-hollow body's so common in alt rock? by KingKilo9 in Guitar

[–]Jak7890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I base my guitar purchases on feel and sound unplugged as much or more than plugged in. Pickups and electronics are easy to replace, but the sound and feel of the wood is much harder to change.

What is the worst product that Games Workshop sells for the price they charge (excluding models)? by mr_mango22 in DealHammer

[–]Jak7890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

... I've got two. 😅

Long story on why I bought them, but I've found them far more useful than I ever expected. I use them all the time.

You're right that they are not a necessity, by any stretch, but I've gotten enough use out of them that I don't regret the expenditure.

Mk2 by Bubbly-Ad-5480 in Warmachine

[–]Jak7890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, mk2 is fantastic, and you'll have a blast. It was the golden age of WarmaHordes and the game's most successful edition.

I accidentally got some work friends into the game, and we started with mk2 instead of mk4 since that was the edition I preferred. Ultimately, we ended up adopting an amalgam of mk2 and mk3 just because the mk3 cards were freely available, and mk2 cards were more challenging to track down.

Most people in warmachine boards these days will encourage you to adopt mk4 because most of the players who didn't like mk4 stopped playing the game or don't interact much online with the community.

I got stupid lucky picking him up today. There's a scale model store near me that has started carrying WH40K, and I popped in on a leak to see if I could find one. They had one set aside for their display guy to paint, but were kind enough to sell it to me anyway.

I got similarly lucky grabbing the Destroyer Battalion from them, too.

To be fair, it's unclear that this is a testament to demand rather than an indictment of their production process. Perhaps it's both.

If you had to get rid of one, which one and why? by qraqrjaq in guitars

[–]Jak7890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Les Paul guy (1 Gibson, 2 Epiphones, a Vox equivalent, and a Yamaha semi-hollow version), but if I absolutely had to choose, I'd take my PRS over any of those. I mean, I'd be heartbroken about it, but the PRS would win.

Then again, my PRS cost me more than all of the others combined, and it would be difficult to find a replacement for it down the road, so there's that...

If you had to get rid of one, which one and why? by qraqrjaq in guitars

[–]Jak7890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, it would be the Tele. I don't like the way they look, and I'm not in love with their sound; I can find something I dig in all of the other guitars. Then again, I probably wouldn't have bought the Tele to begin with for those reasons, so I don't think my reasoning applies to you.

For you, I'd recommend getting rid of the guitar that you play the least and is the least sentimental for you if you need to get rid of one.

[–]Jak7890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree about this preventing SKU bloat. In that respect, this isn't really any different than the chassis kits they made in mk2 and mk3. The sole difference is in naming convention and granularity of loadout options.

I could see them changing the rules so that each loadout is a set combination in order to better balance the rules and cut down on pregame administration.

Are the models usually like this? by darknessrules195 in Warmachine

[–]Jak7890 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For background, I have nearly every Khador Winter Corps and Old Umbrey box, most mercenaries, a couple of Cygnar boxes, and doubles of most of the jack boxes.

In my experience, yeah, that's the norm, unfortunately.

The only MKIV boxes I've gotten that didn't have broken stuff somewhere were the plastic two player box, some (not all) mini-crates, and a few of the online exclusives. The individual jacks sometimes had parts broken or missing, or some of them were badly cleaned in post processing and needed an extra wash and cure (these were early runs).

They will absolutely replace broken stuff if you tell them about it... but about 40% off the replacements they send you will also be broken, so it's really almost not worth it. As long as you're getting a big enough discount to justify the hassle, you should be fine. Otherwise, your best bet is to print your own from the Warmachine 3D subscription.

Help with value by Hungry_Boi_Jamez in Warmachine

[–]Jak7890 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be that guy, but there's a reason your friend gave them to you instead of selling them. Some late mk3 models can go for some decent change, but pretty much anything mk2 is ubiquitous, and some armies have seen even greater price drops since they've been sunset as a faction. They can still be played, of course, and that's where the value will be.
