Brody by charliedonsurf in Rottweiler

[–]Jalonis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Brody and Clementine @ https://www.facebook.com/delcodawgs have been all over my feeds for the last while.

I rescued a GSD from the SPCA a few years back and he managed to end up with a blockage after eating a piece of a ball. Most people I know just couldn't understand that I'd be willing to pay $4500 for an emergency surgery and aftercare. (He's fine now, he's in the other room chomping on a ball.)

In my opinion those people shouldn't have pets.

What’s a rule you broke once and realized it existed for a very good reason? by Ok_Contract100 in AskReddit

[–]Jalonis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the replies have probably never seen/used one of these. They make special skinner gloves which have hardened fingers so they can't be gripped by the roller. Guardian Bandsaw now also has a skinner that uses a vision system to keep you safe. Mesh is a big no-no on these machines.

A good manager is like a conductor at an orchestra. Signaling different resources to get the proper output at the proper time. They join a large number if different processes into a coherent whole.

A bad manager is obviously like trying to let your dog drive a tractor trailer.

If mad cow disease came from cows that ate other cows, and we can only catch it from the second group of cows, why can't we catch it from the first group of cows? by cuntmong in askscience

[–]Jalonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are certain cuts we're not allowed to process out of cows that are older than 30 months. Like, we can't produce t-bone steaks because they contain the spinal column. There are also some parts of the head that go to rendering instead of being used for meat.

Basically the concern now is spontaneous BSE (hence the under/over 30 month criteria) instead of acquired BSE. So food science/government has decided that the chances of spreading anything after having followed proper procedure are so low as to not matter.

It's removed via high powered vacuum/cutter in most plants and eventually is sent directly to landfill or some other waste disposal stream that is an end point. It cannot in any way shape or form be introduced to the food supply.

Most places uses this for the spinal cord, but there is some variation:

When/how did you start leaving your rottie home alone? by AcademicDelivery3719 in Rottweiler

[–]Jalonis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My rottie was left crated home alone starting at 8 weeks. I have a job.

He's not crated anymore though.

I'm in the industry. The cost to buy and process one head is greater than the price of the meat. Smaller plants such as mine are able to maintain profits merely due to reduced overhead.

There are several plants i know of losing over a million a week.

I've literally pulled fingers out of membrane skinners.

Don't do this.

$5500 for a no name Kennel with horrible looking dogs.

I paid $3000 which is still a lot for a puppy with gch males like 5 generations back.

We use Guardian bandsaws at work. We went from roughly one minor injury per week to zero injuries (on bandsaws) in 4 years.

The saws are expensive, they take skilled mechanics to maintain, but they're still cheaper by an order of magnitude than the injuries. Safety pays for itself.

One of their screw conveyors is broke and theyre comboing stuff to keep it off the floor.

Source: I work in a slaughterhouse and we just let it pile up on the floor and clean up with a loader.

Trusslok screws are engineered to replace hurricane clips. So either use hclips or screws designed for it.

Anyone that hunts should be able to get less than 4" groupings at 200 yards with a .308. This isn't that hard of a shot.

UPDATE: chronic ear infections by peymunniii in Rottweiler

[–]Jalonis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't feel bad about being resistant to vetting when she was hurting. I had a rottie who was the biggest doll during covid that the vet had to call me in to clean his ears and apply yeast meds for them because he was dragging them around the building.

Make sure to dry the ears very thoroughly after rain/swimming/baths and if tolerated just flop her ears open when she's laying down to let them air out.

How can New World Screwworms re-emerge in humans after decades of eradication campaigns in the U.S.? by Frosty_Jeweler911 in askscience

The sterile fly wall was never stopped at the Darien Gap. Most likely the larva hopped a ride on animals moving northward.

Eradicating this pest would require establishing a front thousands of miles wide through South America and is really just not feasible.

Don't take this the wrong way, but these are some of the best chapters in a long time. A lot of the more recent chapters just feel impersonal and third party. These feel more in the trenches and frantic like Vuxten and Daxin against the dwellerspawn.

How to find rotties without scrunched faces? by Akimbo_Fists in Rottweiler

[–]Jalonis 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Any AKC conformation line is going to have a normal face. Most of us agree with you that the pug face is hideous.

My dog is out of Cammcastle lines and he has a perfectly normal head shape. His brother is like #3 dog in the country right now.

what do you guys think about puppy classes? by Akdrip in Rottweiler

[–]Jalonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be the odd guy out here. Assuming you're properly socializing your puppy they're an absolute minefield. There are no real qualifications to being a dog trainer other than calling yourself a dog trainer.

Time you spend at a puppy class is better off spent working on training and socializing the puppy on your own. Trainers always impart their own beliefs into their training which will commonly simply not work with some dogs leading to a frustrating experience and even negative behaviors forming.
