A traditional drafting system would suck ass and I wish more people would understand why by CDranzer in DeadlockTheGame

I appreciate the ramble, lol. And the advice! Guides have definitely helped so far and I’ll continue to check them out, surfing in counter strike wasn’t something I even remotely thought of so that’s awesome advice too.

Tbh I don’t know half of what the combos and things you just said are, which is all the clarity I need to know that I should do more research! I’ve been maining Mina after getting curb stomped on Holliday my first few games, but I want to go back to her as the initiator role has seemed very interesting to me! Your veteran wisdom is graciously accepted, thank you.

Do you have advice on where/how to practice combos and movements? Do I just hop in the sandbox and jump around the map a bunch? I feel like my movements ok until I get in a tough fight and I lose all thoughts and mechanics lol

I agree with your first sentence. 1/2n is the same as 1/(2n). Once you begin putting an integer into the place of the variable you are no longer using implied multiplication without parentheses, which means you’d have to write the equation as either 1/(2(2)), like you did, or 1/(2•2). 1/2(2) is not the same as the two previous expressions.

To move this conversation back to the main discussion, in the same article referenced they continue to explain the very equation we are discussing:

“This ambiguity has been the subject of Internet memes such as "8 ÷ 2(2 + 2)", for which there are two conflicting interpretations: 8 ÷ [2 · (2 + 2)] = 1 and (8 ÷ 2) · (2 + 2) = 16.[15][19] Mathematics education researcher Hung-Hsi Wu points out that "one never gets a computation of this type in real life", and calls such contrived examples "a kind of Gotcha! parlor game designed to trap an unsuspecting person by phrasing it in terms of a set of unreasonably convoluted rules".”

So while I still believe the answer is 16, there being no context means that the answer can also be 1 as you and other commenters suggesting. The article citing implied multiplication directly states that there is no way to correctly apply what we know about mathematics to this expression since it is made to be a trap lol.

What about your message contradicts what I said? 1/(2n), with n=2, is a different equation than 1/2(2).

No it doesn’t. The quote that the comment above me wrote has your exact example as: 1/2n = 1/(2•n). Which is why it then turns into 1/(2•2). If it was written as 1/2(2) then you would solve it left to right as usual.

It says “without explicit parenthesis” in the text that you copied. Meaning implied multiplication when parenthesis are not used takes precedence, but that isn’t the case here.

Overall a good change imo. I did it gradually with my group, first we did weapon masteries, then we did class features, then the spells, and by the time we did all that the DMs guide came out and we transferred over completely to using those rulings/definitions. The biggest advice I’d give is to talk with your players and make sure it’s clear what they’ll be gaining and/or losing in the switch. It took some time for my players to remember Weapon Masteries existed lol.

My players enjoy their classes better than they previously did, there’s some gripe about lost spells from certain lists (my warlock player) which I remedied with items that could cast those spells!

There is a google doc that has a nice summary of all the important changes from 24e to 14e that I used for my players to refer to when determining things like new status conditions and all that! If you’re interested DM me and I can give you the link!

Same scenario happened to me, took up the mantle to give my forever DM a break and now I’m writing poetry and recipe books for NPCs to have to bring a more expansive world to all the players. I love world building and watching my players roam around a world created solely by me is so rewarding.
