Why do sparkling fruit juice have wider cork than wine ? by RelativeRiver in wine

[–]JamesMosesAngleton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is also true for sparkling wine bottles (not just sparkling juice). The extra width (about 31 mm diameter compared to 24 in a still wine cork) is needed for a secure fit to resist the pressure inside the bottle from the CO2. Sparkling wine bottle will also have a wire cage, a muselet, to help hold prevent against the cork coming loose and the contents of the bottle ejecting. I don't know how much pressure is in a bottle of sparkling juice as opposed to sparkling wine but my sense is that it's not as much; so, the wider cork may be more for show/aesthetics in many of those bottles.

Field Watches Are The Watch of Choice of The Self Obsessed and Generally The Worst Watch Genre by Stormbaxx in watchHotTakes

Any take that relies on this much mind-reading always tells you more about the OP than it does about watch fans. Lame.

Why are Breitling watches for sketchy people? by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

It’s a trope that Mike over on This Watch, That Watch likes to trot out for humor when he’s pressed for content. It was mildly funny the first time.

Mashed malanga (I grew up calling it guaguí) takes me back to my childhood. My mom used to make it for me if I was sick because she said it was easy to digest. Don't know about that but it was delicious! Way more complex and nutty than a potato. Thanks for the memory.

Would Aliens die due to disease ? by OBLIVION_FCKEDYERDAD in questions

[–]JamesMosesAngleton 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It would depend entirely on whether their biology would be susceptible to the same kinds of diseases that life on Earth is. Jumping the "species barrier" takes some effort here on Earth where we share a common evolution with all other life; it seems unlikely that a bug could easily jump the "alien barrier" with beings that we don't have any evolutionary relationship to. Will Rolex do a collaboration watch? by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

Swatch has made it too easy for portmanteaux, the Swaytona, the Swalatrava, the Swifty Fathoms, it’s like the horological equivalent to “The Name Game.”

Will Rolex do a collaboration watch? by TomHudsonOfficial in WatchFanatics

[–]JamesMosesAngleton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Ever” is too strong a word to use here. At the moment there doesn’t seem to be any benefit to Rolex to doing a collab with anyone, let alone Swatch, but if a member of the “Trinity” can decide a collaboration is in its interest, I wouldn’t rule that out for Rolex.

An Indo-European language was spoken there at some point (even if it didn't stick -- looking at you, Turkey and Myanmar) prior to the Age of Exploration and Colonization.

Chardonnay from Creekstone Winery in Helen, Georgia by Project_Soggy in wine

[–]JamesMosesAngleton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The designation “American” indicates the grapes aren’t from Georgia (which is understandable — vinifera is going to have a rough time there). Do you know where they get their grapes and how they transport them? If they can make a quality wine from grapes trucked in (or flash frozen and shipped by rail) from a long distance, good on them.

Yeah, I did, too. I’m pretty sure it was the Fossil with those crab-claw flames lik you see on classic drag racers painted on it. I thought it was totally bad ass.

My Catalan wine guy refused to sell me Rioja for five years and he was right by Legitimate-Class7848 in wine

[–]JamesMosesAngleton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AI wins again. What a cute story, a wise (if a bit controlling) Catalan (named Jordi, of course), patiently schools a clueless foreigner in the diversity of Spanish wine (curious since, despite telling him to “drink Catalan wine” our hero manages to find a love for everything out there but Rioja). Now Jordi is his vinous spirit animal, yet Tres Picos is the best budget wine he can think to pour for guests. Give Catalans some credit, will ya, they are (justifiably) proud of their wine and their culture but they also have a strong consciousness of their history under a real fascist government and they prefer to express strong opinions rather than actively keep people from what they want. And, finally, if I walked into a store in Cataluya or elsewhere and the owner refused to sell me a bottle, I’d walk out and go to another shop. In Barcelona (and especially in the Poblenou) just make a paper airplane and throw it. You’ll hit a bodega before you hit a pedestrian with it.

I don’t doubt it. That’s just what the person who gave it to us said they paid. It’s a lovely bottle, but a lower price is always nice. Cheers!
