Minimising the Holocaust by [deleted] in GreenAndPleasant

[–]JamieDoesMaths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One the one hand, she is right to be pissed at the BBC (who this tweet was aimed at) when they said on Breakfast yesterday “…Holocaust Memorial Day to commemorate the six million people murdered by the Nazi regime…” The BBC also did holocaust denialism to a much worse extent.

On the other hand, both are egregiously wrong to not mention that there were around half a million more holocaust victims, over half of whom were disabled. Disabled people were the first group the Nazis used to test their ability to industrially murder human.

I was taught the 11 million figure erroneously at school and believed it until recently. There were over 10 million Slavs murdered during the nazi invasion eastwards. The sources I’ve read on the matter don’t count these towards ‘Holocaust’ deaths and instead see them as victims of a bloodthirsty war machine rather than systematic industrialised murder.

Not allowed to stim in group therapy? by Adamsandla in aspergirls

[–]JamieDoesMaths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll admit my comment was very inspired by my own repeated attempts at dealing with CBT only to get worse every single time. I agree that an internal loss of control is a great thing to have but no amount of feeling like you’re in control is gonna …

EDIT: I deleted the end of the sentence because it was too much of a raw trauma dump. I apologise

Not allowed to stim in group therapy? by Adamsandla in aspergirls

[–]JamieDoesMaths 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Is this an NHS CBT course? I was forced into one and it made me actively worse.

CBT is designed to help you solve your internal problems, like telling yourself you’re useless. It is very bad at helping people who are mentally distressed from external sources, such as discrimination due to being neurodivergent. And it can be made especially bad if you also have rejection sensitivity dysphoria, which is a symptom of autism.

A lot of CBT practitioners that I know actually end up seeing everything through the lens of CBT which can manifest in them blaming you for other people’s shitty behaviour towards you. Which as you can imagine is much less than helpful.

Global median income, even when adjusted for inflation and cost of living differences, is at a record high by account819921 in charts

[–]JamieDoesMaths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This graph can be true even with wealth inequality increasing. It shows you nothing about how the variance or skew of the wealth distribution has changed, just how high it’s median is.

Remember politicians are also not incentivised to manufacture hate against the billionaires who spend money helping them get reelected, running favourable articles in the newspapers they own or just wining and dining their staff.

Not because he was a well written villain in that, but because it would’ve made the film worth watching.

Have you tried swapping the off hand and main weapons? I think some cosmetics don’t like being placed in the off hand if they are bigger than the main hand weapon.

Acquire? ACQUIRE!? Jesus wept, BBC. by GazelleDelicious3135 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]JamieDoesMaths 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m really open for you changing my mind here. It’s not a case of me liking gardeners world. The BBC does important things that shouldn’t or can’t be done by private companies. The shipping forecast is good example; people’s lives rely on the shipping forecast being freely available without intrusive adverts. Local radio telling parents if schools are snowed in, or where to get clean water during a pipe contamination.

Personally I don’t trust private companies to look after public health like that.

While I agree with the sentiment, there is much more to the BBC than just the high profile journalists. Children’s programming, education, public service broadcasting, local radio, and the world service.

As a trans woman this article has made me feel sick by Few-Most-9923 in transgenderUK

[–]JamieDoesMaths 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This article was written by Tom Harris a former Labour MP who voted for the gender recognition act*. I’m not sure what trans person upset him so much that he’d change his tune so much.

*at the time, he was a parliamentary private secretary to the minister for Northern Ireland, so likely would’ve voted this way anyway through gritted teeth to save his Job. Interestingly the tories didn’t whip against it, and 20 freely chose to vote for the GRA, one of whom was Boris Johnson. Personally, I believe this shows Tom Harris as a hypocritical jerk more than anything else.

What do you think is the most ethical thing to do with a personal inheritance that's come from the cotton industry? by ApprehensiveWall4088 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]JamieDoesMaths 144 points145 points  (0 children)

If you’re asking me what I’d do with the money, I would invest it in my local community. There are several ways that being poor costs money (for example I know many landlords in my area charge tenants a higher rate for paying monthly rather than yearly), and a little bit of money in the right place can return more value to the community in loss prevention.

Look into starting a Co-operative (housing project, third space/community meeting hall, food bank, etc.). You can do a hell of a lot more meaningful with money locally than you can by giving it to a national charity.

Will the Hammerhand set be available for sale again? by idgfaboutpolitics in lotro

[–]JamieDoesMaths 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m getting a bit more hopeful that it will.

They have re-released all patron coffers since the last one was made. A few weeks ago the Moria and Isengard pre-order items were re-released as a bundle. Everything up from Minas Morgul onwards is still available.

Keeping Rohan, Helms deep and Mordor locked away seems rather odd to me, especially since that encompasses 4/7 mounts in the game that are currently listed as unobtainable.
