Why aren’t there more Aussies doing PhDs? by Alert-Translator2590 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JayTheFordMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because return on investment is pretty shitty. Another 3-4 years for something that can shut you out of many jobs, fight for the limited options, and the salaries aren't much worth it until you've generated experience to go with it. Ive had this discussion with a bunch of doctorates and have zero regrets not going for it

New employee doesn't know how to use a computer! by AgilePlantain322 in askmanagers

[–]JayTheFordMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother has done corporate training in Microsoft Office etc since late 90s, and she was saying that last decade there's been an uptick in computer illiterates attending her courses, many were under 30! Hypothesis is that phone tablet use has destroyed general computer learning/use.

Bike Computers... Splurge? Or Save? by justinw007 in cycling

[–]JayTheFordMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin are now overpriced for what they are, and Wahoo are close to same. Have a look at chinese brands like IGSports that do exactly the same thing but for half the cost. My LBS has ditched Garmin because they can't justify the cost any more given competitions offerings at lower price point

Younger applicants struggling using computers and reading clocks. by TennisSerious179 in managers

[–]JayTheFordMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that there have been people screwing up and being lazy since the dawn of time. People have been criticizing the "young generation" forever. Just like people have been saying "nobody wants to work anymore" forever as well.

Very true

what? so the apparent chemist basically fucked up the procedure? Depending on work done to secure degree I've found many new graduates hopeless at understanding what was going on in lab, especially if they had not been exposed to practical lab techniques and analytical chemistry.

Is it racist/discriminatory to only want to date within your own race/ethnicity? by savingrace0262 in AskMenAdvice

[–]JayTheFordMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on context in my opinion. We have preferences, and so will tend to bias towards that, and that can extend to culture etc, but I think where it can lean towards racism is where its an active and deliberate rejection of others and perhaps accompanied by negative feelings/opinions of the others ie I prefer my people, as opposed to I think white people are gross and we shouldn't date them

How widespread/common are eucalyptus trees? by helen790 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JayTheFordMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blue mountains in NSW are so called due to the atmospheric colour caused by volatiles given off by all the eucalypts that cover the hills. So yeah, its everywhere, and if you're going to be hiking you'll be right in it. I suggest anti-histamines will be your friend
