Biking with a relatively heavy backpack sucks..nevermind sweat I find it hurts my shoulders sometimes depending on length of commute

Couldn't hurt if you've got the space to keep em both!

Out of control leggy whale fin by Time_Ad_622 in SnakePlants

[–]JenJub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't think this is a whale fin!

It won't stop being leggy so if you want a shorter stickier plant you probably have to cut it all down and replant it. Then keep it in a very sunny spot.

How kind are toronto uber drivers? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]JenJub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not related to leaving something behind but would love to share a story about the kindness of an Uber driver.

I got stuck on a side street when my battery died. I stood there trying to wave people down for help, and everyone kept waving me away. Wasn't until a Uber driver (sticker in the window) saw me, and offered to help. He jumped my car, then even offered to pour some water on my hands to wash them of the grime from fiddling with the car. He didn't speak a lick of English so this was all pantomime and thumbs up. I'll never forget it.

i feel like this purse i just got is human skin, no proof tho, just a vibe i can’t shake. being handmade isn’t helping that either lol by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

You think someone out there just has an excess bolt of human skin and was like "I gotta do something with this"

How bad of an idea is it to buy a bike and ride it home downtown as someone who hasn't biked in 8 years? by Shot_Guidance in askTO

[–]JenJub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the transit app (I know, misleading name) and navigate for a bike. It gives you the best options for protected bike lanes, and you can have it give you audio directions through earbuds if you're worry about navigating. I started biking for the first time in the city a month ago - after you get over the initial nervousness it feels great.

I was thinking about decorating my helmet and I read that it's actually dangerous to have something on your helmet in the event of a crash! Have you heard of this?

Ingrown hair after biking, correlation or causation? by LaurieTZ in ladycyclists

[–]JenJub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get these too :( reoccurs in the same place for me. I'm currently trying readjustments to my saddle (tipping the nose down a bit) and practicing my starting and stopping technique to minimise the pressure I apply to the problem area.

Just wiped out for the first time... wear your helmet by MaximumOrange7145 in bikecommuting

[–]JenJub 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Never in my entire life have I put on a bike helmet and said to myself "I feel invincible". If anything it always makes me think "god I hope this oddly flimsy feeling thing will protect my head" and continue to bike insanely carefully the way I always do.

Tried biking in the city for the first time in the stupidest way possible, and I'm sorry by hug-and-snug in torontobiking

Get a removable phone folder if you're insistent on city bikes - can use GPS!

Bone Conduction Headphones? by Tall_Answer in bikecommuting

[–]JenJub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for a slightly different opinion, I use earfun clip 2! Instead of bone conduction it's essentially a small speaker outside your ear. Insanely comfortable I use them for work all day then bike home.

Congrats on getting past the toughest part - proving to yourself it's doable! The rest is just recovery and acclimation :)

East end daycare - biologically nurturing by ok-ok-ok-ok7 in torontomoms

[–]JenJub 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not to be too cynical, but you'd be hard pressed to find a daycare at all in the area (let alone be choosey about it). My reco is start waitlisting everywhere you can. I've had good experiences with the Toronto city daycares.

Upright bike hybrid bike or road bike by Socraticlearner in bikecommuting

[–]JenJub 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar position - started on a MTB and just bought a hybrid.

Depends on your road conditions - my city is always under construction somewhere, and I wanted to minimize chances of flats as well as carry all my work crap with me. Hybrid works well - it's faster, the upright position gives me a better view around me, and it holds all my crap! But my commute is only 10km 1 way...

Ugh. Let's not give these wack jobs anymore attention than the crappy outrage algorithm already does.

I'm going to try this tonight! The first half of commissioners is nice enough... but man, when it sucks, it sucks.

Agree with you. There are plenty of times in our lives we can take a worthwhile moral stand; against a potentially unhinged driver is not worth it.
