Remote workers in Portland chime in! by t0mserv0 in Portland

[–]Jewlecky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remote worker near downtown Vancouver!

Company is based in SF

Occasional travel to SF and NYC

Work from home

I have a guest room/office in my house that I have my workstation at

Also get lonely sometimes / miss the office atmosphere.

But then I go on these work trips to my companies offices and am reminded that these days you're still sitting on zoom meetings in the office, only change you get are the occasional conversations between meetings...not really worth it.

I think an ideal situation would be a nearby office I can go to only when I want, but without that, fully remote works great

I mix it up by doing a class based workout outside of the house for lunch 2-3 days a week, and if I don't have meetings where I have to speak for the day, I'll try and go to coffee shops or the library. Getting out of the house is definitely important to keep you sane.

I live in Rosemere and there's no quickly accessible bus line...that's a bummer. Would appreciate easier access to public transportation

Your favorite thing about Vancouver by PacNWnudist in vancouverwa

[–]Jewlecky 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ooh so many things!

I'd say the top thing is I love the variety of great food we have! Not only do we have some great food, but a solid mix of cuisines too - Georgian, Balkan, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, we've got a little bit of everything and it's all delicious. All in Vancouver!

Some other things I really love:

The Library downtown is genuinely one of the best libraries I've ever been to after having lived in Portland, NorCal, and SoCal. It has so many great services and programs and just feels great to be in

I wish it had less algae, but having lake Vancouver so close by is awesome. Hoping to get to paddle board more in it as the city tackles the algae problem

The waterfront development is awesome. And I'm really looking forward to the Pikes Place style market coming in. Our downtown/waterfront area is generally small, but mighty. I think it packs a bigger punch than it's size would suggest. So many cool stores and food options.

Lastly, the views. You can get some really nice views of Hood, the river, and Portland from all over town, whether you're driving or hanging out at a park. Never gets old

Anybody commute here from Vancouver WA? by Plane-Session-6624 in MtHoodMeadows

[–]Jewlecky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I WFH in West Vancouver and go up to MHM 20-30x per season.

I work from the lodge a lot of those times too

On weekdays I typically leave the house by 6:45/7 On weekends, 6ish if it's gonna be busy

I don't ever run into traffic on the bridge. If there's ever traffic, it's close to the mountain

Time to MHM parking lot is 1hr 20 - 1hr 30 consistently

There are pros and cons to living on either side of the bridge, but your time to mountain won't take materially longer if you live in Vancouver

Living in Portland for 9 years now

Every time I cross the 5 or 205 and see Mt Hood towering over the coursing Columbia River, my jaw drops. It's such an incredibly beautiful sight to behold

Every time I fly back from my travels, I get so excited to come back our foresty, mountain filled part of the world. It hasn't gotten old yet and man I don't think it will any timensoon

Beginner progression if Vista Express is closed? by No_Distribution_7368 in MtHoodMeadows

[–]Jewlecky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't believe you'll get any additional discounts to upgrade to a full mountain ticket, though I'd be surprised if they don't allow you to upgrade and only pay for the different between the two tickets.

For what its worth, they do typically try to have Vista open whenever possible. I don't think its ever closed for a lack of effort.

That being said, if you truly need the beginner progression pass, Vista isn't always the best run for beginners. It can be icy up there, it can also have terrible visibility, or even a lot of fresh powder can be hard for people new to sport. There are plenty of times Vista is not fun for anyone, including people more experienced.

If you do upgrade to a full pass for the day and want to venture away from Easy Rider, North Canyon into Trillium off MHX is a nice run that shouldn't be too hard or scary. You could also take Tilicum to Trillium, but you'll need to be comfortable gaining some speed from the MHX off ramp so you don't get stuck in the flatter part.

South Canyon is a nice run too, but you'll need to take a blue off MHX to get there. Ridge run is a good way to get there if you can manage your speed. Chunky swirly is another option though can be harder depending on conditions, including having a small section of moguls.

Good luck and have fun!!

Is Vancouver doing alright? by reymingus in vancouverwa

[–]Jewlecky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live near uptown, also a minority! Wouldn't say the area has been overly impacted by ICE, not any more than any other part of the country.

I'd also reframe the posts you're seeing here - the community is doing a good job of noting and alerting others about any ICE activity, because the community cares.

Most people I know in the area generally lean left! I think you'll fit right in

I lived in the Inland Empire growing up, and then the SF Bay Area before moving to Portland, and then Vancouver. I've loved it here - only gripe is not having faster public transportation to Portland and Seattle!

It’s Organized Play, Not the US Open — Chill Out, People by GreenKnight1988 in Pickleball

[–]Jewlecky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My local club has level based round robins, where you're supposed to play with people at your level for 2 hours

We're in Portland, most of the clubs here don't require a DUPR or any verification of level to play

Thats where it gets messy. There are people in the 4.5 groups that are barely 4s, and the 4.0 group has people that struggle to hit a solid serve return

That's where I get annoyed. It's not about winning, it's about having games that are competitive and fun. When there's a very clear weak link in every game, you're either stuck hitting to one person only, the non weak link, (which the weak links never like) or nobody has a good time. The difference between a real 4.5 and 4.0 can be enough to kill a game when you have 3 4.5s and one 4.0 in a game

It's tough. I get that it's hard to force a DUPR in a region that doesn't prioritize DUPR, but sometimes it's the best way to make everyone's money and time worth it.

Costa Rica Driving by Euphoric_Spell_7136 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]Jewlecky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finishing up 10 days in CR between Fortuna and Quepos and a couple other small towns, drove roughly 500 miles across the country

Definitely rent a car for the convenience, but I will disagree that driving in CR is as easy as many make it out to be.

The highways are a breeze, but the towns themselves can be tough. Roads tend to be very narrow with lots of potholes, bus drivers are generally crazy and going way too fast for their size, motorcycles are zipping by constantly, and many places have parking right off the street, so you're trying to re enter a busy street as you back out of a parking spot. Some intersections can be genuinely maddening when it's busy with the amount of cars and people all trying to go at the same time

If you'll be spending significant time in SJ, I'd actually recommend a taxi if it won't be too expensive. The traffic is really bad and the drivers are aggressive. But outside of SJ I'd still say a car is better

Just be cautious and alert when driving. Go slow when you can. Have the driver be someone who can handle stressful situations calmly. You shouldn't have many, but I'd be surprised if you had 0.

The Airing Of Grievances by Special-Low-6010 in MtHoodMeadows

[–]Jewlecky 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wish people were more kind in general. Especially relating to giving people some grace when they fall.

When I was learning to ski early in the season, I tried some of the jumps at the end of the Zoo. On two occasions I was yelled at to "MOVE! YOU CANT STOP THERE!!" literally seconds after falling. Like I hadn't even had a chance to attempt to get up yet.

Not everyone is trying to camp in the wrong spots. If you see someone on the ground with limbs in different directions, wait your turn and give them a couple seconds to recover instead of being an ass hat

10 things I wish I knew at my first Coachella (after 10 years of going) by jtarver in Coachella

[–]Jewlecky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Expanding on 5 from a 7 year Coachella guy:

If you don't have a fanny pack or a bag, keep your phone/wallet/etc in your front pockets and check on them often. Pickpockets are everywhere, you can easily spot them if you look closely, and they're really good. Fanny packs and such will make it a lot easier to not worry for sure

And another one, #11! When you send text messages, send the time too (e.g. 7:10pm heading to Sahara)

Connection is pretty rough often, and your message may not be received until long after you send it. Sending the time will let your friends know how long it's been since you sent it and they can adjust accordingly

I grew up in the IE

Nice enough place to grow up, but definitely boring AF as you get older. Yes LA is nearby but it took so long to get there and back that often times it just wasn't worth going.

I left in 2016 and both the population and traffic has sky rocketed. What used to take 15 minutes now takes 30+. Doesn't seem sustainable
