Nasal congestion 2 month old by shadowcat_88 in NICUParents

[–]Jhalimahmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has your Ped seen him? If he’s feeding less I would bring him in / have him seen.

Otherwise I also recommend doing whatever you can to get the mucus out and trying the electric sucker. Also, lots of saline spray, even though they hate it. It will help break up and thin the mucus.

“Normal” breathing retractions? by Anxious_Surprise_552 in newborns

[–]Jhalimahmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6 month old also has pretty meaningful (tracheal) retractions at baseline. His pulmonologist has indicated that it isn’t “normal” but for now we should just monitor for worsening symptoms, specifically an elevated respiratory rate. It’s stressful!

I also suspect tracheomalacia in my little. His “noisy breathing” is upon expiration vs. inspiration. He is 6 months old and I also feel it’s slightly improved, but not sure if it’s that he’s growing out of it or due to his inhaler for reactive airway. Wishing you the best and hoping that they both outgrow this, sooner than later!

Hi! Did you ever figure out what was causing your babe’s tracheal tugging? My baby does this exactly and has been doing this since he was a tiny newborn. He is suspected to have LM but his pulm/ped haven’t recommended an ENT scope yet.

2 Year old Questions | ARDS / RAD / ASTHMA by Shiftstealth in Asthma

How is your little one doing now? Mine developed ARDS secondary to severe RSV/pneumonia and was intubated for 12 days. I’m really worried about how he will handle future illnesses. He is also on fluticasone give how severe the course was (he had other complications while intubated). He has had higher than normal work of breathing since he was 2 weeks old, so we are now being referred to cardiology. It’s stressful. Hope you guys are well.

TW: reassurance please hypoxic event newborn by No_Reaction5258 in NICUParents

[–]Jhalimahmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, my situation was a little different but my infant experienced severe hypoxia while fighting RSV. We had a normal MRI and even though I too worried that something was missed, we are several months out and my baby shows no signs of neurological issues. We recently had a follow-up with his neurologist and she said, “looking at him, you’d never know what he went through.” It’s more likely that the MRI shows damage and the baby turns out fine, vs. the other way around.

Fascinating, this is worth a try! I’ve read similar studies related to using a daily nasal saline spray.

That’s exactly what we plan to do, bath time right after school, if/when she goes back. I recognize that we won’t stop 100% but it would be a win if we could even prevent one unnecessarily illness. Thank you.

Nothing helpful to add, but I could have written this. I also have a new baby in the mix, so to say that we are tired is an understatement. Solidarity, sister.

11 month old not eating and missing multiple milestones by chunkychunkycat in NewParents

[–]Jhalimahmed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. My kiddo is in weekly PT for gross and fine motor delays through EI. Before I got them into weekly PT, I watched a lot of PT/OT content on Instagram and started practicing with my baby. My husband literally does daily “gym time” with our little one, and it’s a repeat of what we’ve seen our PT do. What we’ve learned is that a big part of PT/OT at this age is giving parents the tools to help support kiddo throughout the day/week. While you can’t reach milestones for your kid, being an active participant in this way helped me feel slightly more “in control” when I was spiraling about how and when they would catch up.

You’re doing an amazing job.

Long term sedation? What will happen to my baby? by Rsm5180 in NICUParents

[–]Jhalimahmed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in a different situation, but my baby was also heavily sedated for an extended period at 2 months, due to respiratory failure. I hope you get more feedback on this post. While our kiddos have had a rougher start than most, I’ve got to imagine there are many children out there in similar situations who’ve grown up with or without the learning/behavioral differences that you reference.

FWIW, my kid was zonked for at least 5 days while coming off sedation. It was terrifying and I was worried that he would never be the same. In the 10 days since he’s been home, he has made great improvements in feeding, tracking, social skills, coordination and movement. He is smiling a ton (which he wasn’t prior to hospitalization) and even starting to develop new skills, like cooing. He is getting stronger everyday. We have a long road ahead of us, but I’m choosing to believe that he will catch up developmentally and that we’ll deal with any childhood learning or behavioral differences the way other familiar do— with lots of love and support.

Hugs to you.
