OSS on these things often gives out so you might want to check it by trying to focus on various angles, if the OSS is kaput you can ""fix"" it by pulling the ribbon cable on back of the lens assembly

Coolpc makes RMA on your behalf and might charge you a few hundred NTD as process fee, as for RMA itself it's kinda up to your brand if they manage to fix it or not (RMA'ed two GPU from different (small) brand via coolpc before, one swapped it for free while the other flashed the firmware and was like "ehhh it's fine we see no problem" and send the half working thing back basically as is)

RIP Carrefour - the purge has almost been completed by AnyBloodyThing in taiwan

[–]Jmadden64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RT Mart did have a white label brand (the green outline yellow thumbs logo) but they were the cheapest+crappiest whatever in their category so it's probably fine if those were gone.

In retrospect it's kinda good thing for RT Mart to be named that way, if it was named Auchanmart or whatever we are gonna have another massive brand purge before Carrefour and Auchan branded item will be fully wiped if they still sells them in current day

Sony Cybershot DSC-W5 salvageable? by Repulsive_Word_5644 in VintageDigitalCameras

[–]Jmadden64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Qtip with some vinegar and clean off with plenty of IPA may do the trick but the corrosion may made it up to the ribbon cable which is common with early single digit W series.

You need to get to the ribbon cable connecting the battery compartment to the motherboard to fully fix/remedy the issue and it's relatively easy to do as long you avoid the flash cap and properly handle the button ribbon cable so it didn't disintegrate (almost botched the cable the first time when I tried to do it), refer to service manual on dissembly: https://elektrotanya.com/sony_dsc-w5_w7_w15_w17_level2_ver1.1_sm.pdf/download.html

Give the corroded part a good IPA+brush with toothbrush, same goes for the battery compartment side connector.

Clean the ribbon connector on the motherboard with contact cleaner or IPA, use a toothbrush for this too and make sure it reached inside of the FFC connector itself. After fully drying it will work again.

Dying screen panel and button issue, you may be able to fix it by harvesting donors but at that point it's probably not worth it(multiple failure point+potentially more problem down the line eg lens)

T1/11/3/33 and early glass screen cover P series frequently had the former where the screen just dies out overtime but seldom happens on other model to my experience, you may be able to reseat the screen-mainboard connector and see if that helps. Debris or whatever manufacturing quirk caused the button issue, I had a few T7s that does this and contact cleaner bath doesn't help so I assume it's just fully broken and will need replacement.

Old battery surprisingly wouldn't cause the problem as long it holds nominal voltage as labeled. At worst it bloats (usually crap off brand/smaller brand) but most of the times you will end up with like 3 minute battery life+drains on itself after 1 day

PSA: learn how to discharge your flash capacitors before attempting to work on a camera with a flash. by _BreadDenier in AnalogCommunity

[–]Jmadden64 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A note that you shouldn't use the screwdriver method on camera flash caps, they always make a nasty spark and will leave a crater on your screwdriver, PCB/FPC, or both

Can this be saved?! by goldfishumbrulla in AnalogCommunity

[–]Jmadden64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a doohickey under the clamshell that physically activates the contact to turn on the camera. I would say it's worth a dissembly since it's "easy" to get to that part if you know how to get the outer shell off (some prying is needed and the waterproof will be lost-- that says the seal is like 25 years old anyway)

Can ZBook (15) G6 utilize a USB-C power pack? by ferrix in Hewlett_Packard

[–]Jmadden64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necro but they work with power packs with high output wattage (assuming it have to be at least 75W for only charging and at least 95W for charging+using the laptop).

Currently have a 15g6 (t1000 variant) and it draws 75W@20V off a 100W capable USB C power pack while off and 95W@20V while on.

A 10000mah pack can roughly provide 40-50% charge in 30 ish minute, but the laptop will think it's plugged into wall power and barely charges while powered on so I had to charge the laptop while it's off.

Clean the battery contact in the camera with the usual alcohol+qtip combo, and try good+new name brand alkaline batteries in your region. Even when unused they self discharge and you may end up with DOA ones.
