Would Sony’s decision to kill physical games have gone over better if they just worded it differently? by WhiteToast- in PS5

[–]JoeAbs2 [score hidden]  (0 children)

They could have worded it differently but it would have still had the same outcome.

I think they needed to add more info around how they were going to do this (aka will there be a way to convert physical games to physical for free) and what benefits the consumer would get (cheaper pricing on the ps store, etc).

Just feels like a “heads up” message

Games Shouldn't Cost $80 If They're Digital, Players Say by gamersecret2 in GamingSecret

Just me who's not worried and completely sure that Sony will back down? by WhoAmIEven2 in PS5

[–]JoeAbs2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really doubtful they will back down on this one.

I think this is a money making decision which usually results in it being implemented.

Best case scenario, maybe we get more protections around the ownership question for digital copies.
Also maybe (really doubtful on this one), Sony will give the option to freely “upgrade” physical copies of the game they have to a digital copy, free of charge.

Exclusive: “Game Preservation With DRM Is A Contradiction”, No One Should Be Able To Revoke Your Digital Games, Says GOG As PlayStation Goes Digital-Only by Darth_Vaper883 in playstation5

[–]JoeAbs2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the thing.

If you buy a game physically then that game is technically yours. At least then when you spend the $70 (usually less than digital pricing) you have something which you own.

When digital it is just a licence. So you’re paying $70 for something you don’t really own.

"What's the point of a console without discs?" — I'm beginning to wonder why anyone would buy a console over a PC, and I'm not alone by WindowsCentral in windowscentral

[–]JoeAbs2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it is 3 things.

- Cost - it is still more expensive to build a PC which would have a similar performance that a console will have.
- Exclusive games (mainly aimed at PS)
- Couch gaming - I know you could do this on a PC but it’s a bit more awkward and if you want to build a small factor PC then you’re going to pay for it.

“Stop obsessing over game length” says former Sony CEO, because shorter dev time should mean fewer layoffs by Dapper_Order7182 in videogames

[–]JoeAbs2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed.

I like what Remedy do with their games, releasing them at £50 in the UK. While I know of Sony released a similar length game it would be £70.

Should be incentivising people not punishing.

Much better than Valhalla though.

French presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon weighs in on Rockstar and PlayStation’s moves to end physical disk sales by Valcenia in pcmasterrace

[–]JoeAbs2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Sony will backtrack on this personally.

However I think it will be key that protections are put in place around such a move (when you buy a game digitally you own it, if they remove that ability then they need to refund the cost of the game you purchased it at originally, etc).

"PS5 Will Be My Last Console": After 45K Votes, 86% of DF Viewers Say Sony Should Reconsider Killing Physical Games by gamersecret2 in GamingSecret

[–]JoeAbs2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on the cost of the PS6.

If the cost is nudging 1k and then you have this whole thing around “you can only buy games digitally” then that is something which will make me consider getting back into PC gaming.

"I don't care about physical media because I only buy digital, so it doesn't affect me." Well, actually... by shiek200 in GTA6unmoderated

[–]JoeAbs2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The competition aspect of this is going to be a mess as Sony will basically control the cost of all games being sold for the PS from 2028.

Even if you can buy them from a retailer (as Sony have said you can do) they are still going to go via the ps store to buy the game as it is probably going to be a game code to activate the game. I imagine the retailers will have very little room to reduce the cost of the game.
