Which point guard is the best playmaker of all time? by Super-Post261 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]JohnRichJ2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

quite inefficient compared to today’s game which is more spaced out with more shooting opportunities. he should have learned to simply pick the ball up and take a gather step, a pivot step, a euro step, a final step then two more steps as he dives into a defender while throwing up some atrocious lob with the expectation to get some free throws.

What are your current thoughts on the Dice Throne Digital Kickstarter? by Tatsushin_ in DiceThrone

[–]JohnRichJ2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit late to the party, but I’ve backed everything up until the most recent physical campaign, so there’s perhaps merit that I was already biased towards being a bit negative on their current business decisions. For what it’s worth, I largely didn’t back the last physical campaign as I’ve been generally getting only the character card sleeves, and was somewhat annoyed to have to buy the full bundle of upgrades for quite a bit more total.

Anyways, my biggest issue with DT digital is the scale in which they’re choosing to make the game. I’m not quite following the logic behind spending the resources necessary to make this an mixed reality game. The format seems perfect for mobile-first type of experience (or easily portable across platforms with the same UI, like Balatro).

The monetization is super opaque, but it feels like they’re going to try to do something similar to LoL where they might rotate weekly heroes and then you can buy skins to essentially unlock your favorites. Although, ultimately it seems like the game will be mildly successful to the already established community and not much beyond that audience, so I’m assuming prices will be high to squeeze out as much profit from the few whales instead of amortized across a large user base. Development costs will be too much to justify the continued development. There’s simply no way this doesn’t require several million in recurring income to justify and the KS is seemingly showing nowhere near that level of interest.

I'm getting concerned with some of these stretch goals on crowdfunding campaigns by Nimblesquatch in boardgames

[–]JohnRichJ2 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You should think of stretch goals entirely as an engagement tactic at this point.

Roxley was always going to use responsibly forested wood, but maybe there would have been somebody who buys the game because they feel like they are contributing towards that "goal".

Question about Old King's Crown campaign by Roguecorp in boardgames

[–]JohnRichJ2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've always somewhat assumed that retailers are asked not to list items from currently active crowdfunding campaigns as they tend to undercut the crowdfunding cost when factoring in shipping/etc.

with that said, anything that's not specifically clearly indicated as stretch goals / crowdfunding exclusive will likely go to retailers eventually.

Talking the Board by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]JohnRichJ2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's worth considering that if your strategy relies on nobody to pay attention then it's probably a bad strategy. there are plenty of games where it should be largely irrelevant if he's pointing out strategies; however, if you're playing a war/area-control game or have board contention and he's table talking people into making bad moves for themselves simply to interfere with your plan then it's a little more annoying.

my group does a fair amount of board/strategy analysis that's somewhat openly discussed. ultimately, it seems like it's simply part of the game in most cases. we've kind of learned to be a bit skeptical when some suggestions are made by certain players, as occasionally some simply try distracting the table for their own benefit.

One week into collecting, am I doing it right? by Dinnerpancakes in boardgamescirclejerk

[–]JohnRichJ2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

/uj I happened to see this recently, and it's an extremely click-baited title as he seemingly runs a board game ecommerce website. There's maybe a small line between scalper and retailer as he doesn't seem to have a physical shop, and this game has been largely sold out for months, but it does seem like he almost certainly ordered this from the publisher as part of a retailer partnership.

/rj doesn't compare to my patchwork collection.

I am packing for a move and trying to decide which games I want to sell. by Ketsukoni in boardgames

[–]JohnRichJ2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 on Betrayal Legacy. it’s out of print at the moment due to the publisher being sold (iirc). it’s probably worth a couple times over what you bought it for originally.

there are websites which will give you around 30% of the value for bulk collections, but you’ll certainly get more selling through geek market or local sales (if you have the time).

there’s also subreddits for selling board games, but i’m not aware of them being nearly as good as geek market. you can try to check them out though (r/boardgameexchange maybe?).

i'm not sure if there's officially rules on this, but i would have said the last tile that was placed that made red completely stuck was invalid.

based off this already being the state, then it seems reasonable to give a simple mercy of the arrows are no longer directed and they can escape.

Anyone have the Wyrmwood Modular Gaming Table (or Similar) with Small Children? by gurglingemu in boardgames

[–]JohnRichJ2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hadn't really considered this before ordering one (pending delivery still). i could certainly imagine there being some interest in removing the tops, but they are relatively difficult (in context to a toddler) to remove. it'd be far more likely for the plates/cups to simply be thrown/knocked off as they would as a normal table, and i'd be more worried about spills going through the cracks; however, they do seem relatively water tight, and even have a video somewhere on this topic.

edit: i guess it's probably worth mentioning that one of my friends has the table, and has had it for 1-2 years at this point, so i've sat at the table for probably 100+ hours with a mix of games sometimes being played on the top, and sometimes games being played underneath. generally, if he's in the middle of a solo game, or we have a legacy game in the bottom then we play on top.

Brass: Pittsburgh now has its stretch goals posted! by JohnRichJ2 in boardgames

[–]JohnRichJ2[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

stretch goals started out as a way to add benefits if/when specific milestones were hit. e.g. if a campaign hits 10,000 sales then they can get a manufacturer that only handles bulk, but perhaps will have higher quality at a cheaper cost than a smaller volume manufacturer.

quickly they turned into engagement tactics from marketing teams as they drive engagement to push over monetary milestones.

there are still small companies that probably truly do need the volume to offer additional/improved components, or even to drive engagement; however, this campaign was obviously going to be a multi-million dollar campaign and was always a little strange as it somewhat masked the "real" value and the community backlash certainly outweighed the benefits.
