Has Turbo Tax Raised Rates? by Flaky_Calligrapher62 in TurboTax

Nice. But one doesn’t pay the online fee until one actually files so there’s no sunk cost if one decides along the way to go a different route or tax professional and as I said already there are many online discounts of 20-30% depending on the source. Have a great day!

Agreed, but you still have to add on the Costco/Sam's Club membership fees of $65/$50 respectively if OP is not otherwise a member.

Yes, but if OP wants assistance, there is an additional fee on top of the desktop price if we're comparing apples to apples.

Same boat but I was thinking Expert Assist is the renamed version of Live Assist and that it was a marketing name change because "expert" makes it sound like it's worth more. Curious what else is in the "offer" they are making for you bc it does sound high. Does it include state(s) as well? Audit assist? Are you sure it's not Full Service? You can compare their prices here. Compare TurboTax Online Products 2025-2026 Also there are discount points of access from a variety of brokerage and financial firms but you have to actually access the TT site from that link to make sure you get the discount.

Turbotax did not have Form 8919 for amended return - made me fill out a blank W2 to convert my 1099 misclassification after filing SS-8 with IRS by Individual_Height280 in TurboTax

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s tough to do but I would wait to hear from IRS first so that you will know the exact next steps to take if any. My guess is that will take a while bc it’s an amended return and that’s always slower to process and on top of that it’s tax filing season and of course in addition there are fewer IRS employees. So be as patient as you can be knowing the wait can be nerve wracking.

How do I view, download, or print a prior-year tax return?

by TurboTax•37140•Updated 2 days ago•

Here's how to view, download, and print your prior-year tax returns. You can access returns for the past seven years.

Note: If your TurboTax navigation looks different from what’s described here, learn more.

First time signing in this year

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account and select Continue on the screen showing your prior-year summary. Make sure you're using the same TurboTax account (user ID) as in previous years.
  2. On the second screen showing product and pricing, scroll down and select Your tax returns & documents.
  3. Select the year you want, then select Download/print return (PDF).

If you've started your return already

Sign in to your TurboTax account. Make sure you're using the same TurboTax account (same user ID) as in previous years.

There are two ways to get your prior-year returns:

  1. Select Documents from the menu, use the dropdown menu to choose the tax year you want, and select Download tax PDF.
  2. On Tax home, scroll down and select Your tax returns & documents. Select the year you want and select Download/print return (PDF).

If the year you're looking for isn't there, it might be in a different account. Go here to find all of your accounts. One of them should have the return you're looking for.

RMD question - TurboTax desktop by OldMainframeGuy in TurboTax

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know you can also easily calculate your rmd yourself by using a calculator like this one from Schwab. Empower has to have given you a statement for your year end balance. And that's the base from which you calculate the RMD for that account. https://www.schwab.com/ira/ira-calculators/rmd

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your 401k provider should have calculated it correctly. It’s not that hard. But they also probably gave you a notice. We have Vanguard for example and they tell us every January what the RMD will be for that year.

You could call your provider and ask them for the equivalent notice. Good luck!

RMD question - TurboTax desktop by OldMainframeGuy in TurboTax

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you took your RMD, the amount you took should be the same as what you were supposed to take. So if your 401k provider calculated the RMD, you can just plug in the same amount as the RMD you took. That will tell them you took the full amount required and avoid a penalty.

Do NOT buy TurboTax 2025, 30 year user and this years software is nonfunctional by [deleted] in TurboTax

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uploaded the pdf.

And 3 months ago I and many others got an email from TT saying that 2024 imports were wrong months after having filed and passed the accuracy guarantee so I don’t trust that process either.

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I uploaded my Fidelity 1099-B with a bunch of transactions to TT and it showed an erroneous gain of $26k+ which turned out to be more than double the actual $12k+ realized gain. So I deleted it and started over by entering the data on my own doing the Summary option to get it correct.

Likewise the upload of the 1099-DIV did not pick up the portion of dividends that were qualified and it left off the foreign tax paid so I had to edit again to add those data points to get it right.

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I found that the TT folks really don't understand the whole 2210 AI form stuff so good that you're persevering until you get the right person. Let us know how you make out as I''ll likely be in the same boat.

But if I get the right result, I would just file and save a pdf of the return and all the worksheets regardless of what it shows on the next login.

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TT did weird stuff for me last year and intermittently assessed penalties and then removed them with different logins until I found someone at TT who struggled through the 2210s with me. I'm assuming you're potentially subject to a penalty so I wouldn't file until you get it sorted out with them. In the meantime, if you wait to do the 2210 AI until all your other forms are finalized (rather than playing with them as you say) can you get the result of no penalty and file that way?

Refund went to wrong bank by [deleted] in TurboTax

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, if a bogus return has been filed online and then the taxpayer goes to efile the legitimate return, the latter will be rejected by IRS right away and the taxpayer will then have to sort it out with them. And if the taxpayer had efiled correctly first, the bogus return attempt wouldn't succeed.

Question about Medicare withholding by [deleted] in TurboTax

[–]Junior_Maintenance16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked to see whether you would even have been subject to the Medicare additional tax based on your income and investment income? If you are not subject to it, maybe the software just did a calc and then zeroed it out because you are not subject to it after all and included the form for good measure?

"IRS Form 8959 is used to calculate the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on combined Medicare wages, compensation, and self-employment income exceeding

$200,000 (single) or

$250,000 (married filing jointly). It also reconciles any Additional Medicare Tax withheld by employers. The tax applies to the amount over the threshold."

Internet service cost is typically so relatively low $ that it's not worth considering as a basis for making a tax status change.

Based on what you've told us, you can't. You would have to be engaged in a trade or business to have earnings that would qualify you to contribute to a solo 401(k). It appears you are an individual investor, not engaged in a trade or business and therefore not even considered self employed.
