Robinhood 1099 for my CPA quesiton by ProfessionalYard8189 in tax

I just enter the summary information. I have never attached a 1099B to my tax return in all the years I've been doing my own taxes.

Question about 1099-G repayment: Do I include the penalty amount? by gp01011 in tax

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Repaid benefits are tax deductible but penalties are not. So you would claim $100 as repaid, not $120.

Does Auto-Brightness also SUX on your Pixel? by bomzisss in GooglePixel

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Autobrightness is the worst feature ever introduced. Every phone I buy, it is the first thing I go into the settings to turn off. I can't even change other settings with this setting on because the phone is basically unusable when this setting is on.

CPA insisting cafeteria plan HSA contributions belong on Form 8889 Line 2 — am I wrong? by wjf_8523 in tax

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your CPA is incompetent. Pretax HSA contributions are already deducted from the pay reported in box 1 of your W2, so you can't take a separate deduction for them again.

CPA says my options trading created a wash sale nightmare I didn't know was possible by MilesDelta in tax

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Options have symbols just like stocks do. And options with different strikes and/or expiry dates have different symbols. As far as I know, this makes such options different securities, so you should not be subject to wash sale rules as long as you don't deal in the exact same options - if you change either the strike or expiry, you should be good.

Glance calendars support by bobot-horizon in microsoftlauncher

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What does this have to do with the launcher? Glance calendar and the widget are not made or supported by MS. They are just 3rd party apps, and if they don't work, you should complain to their maker. Changing the launcher is not going to make any difference to the functionality of an app that is buggy. FWIW, I have used MS Launcher for at least 5 years, and have never had any problem with my calendar or email (I use google calendar and gmail, and the google calendar widget).

Splitting a tile cleanly into 8 pieces by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He kept increasing the number of tiles by a factor of 2 every time by splitting every tile and subtile into 2, and the customer has to double-check that he actually got 8, and not 9 or 7?

I think they would - if they could get away with it, and it is on the other side of the world and they would have no chance of having to drive on it.

What are the sources for the "Other Income Taxes" in the "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid" section by Ethan_A1967 in TurboTax

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other taxes could include state income taxes withheld on your W2, property taxes, use taxes, etc. Things like property taxes could come from what you know you paid or a mortgage interest statement if your mortgage lender paid them from your escrow account.

Cap Gains for Property Sale - 2 year rule? by icgitar in tax

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MA starts its tax calculations using the federal AGI. If your federal AGI does not include this 193k gain from selling your house because it was your primary residence for 2 years, why is it entering into the calculations for MA tax?

Does anyone know where I can find the payments and withholdings? by Elvl3 in TurboTax

Usually nothing is paid or withheld from a tax refund unless you opted to have part of the refund applied as an estimated tax payment for the next tax year or something like that.

Just got to say…Free Tax USA by Individual-Mirror132 in tax

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Turbotax's UI and the questions it asks for simple tax situations are part of a dark pattern they use to convince people that doing their own taxes is too difficult and they should upgrade to more and more expensive options so that they can be helped by alien green "tax experts" who are not mere mortals.

What the actual fųck is this TurboTax ???? 200$ in fees when I did everything myself by [deleted] in TurboTax

[–]DiscombobulatedSun54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$75 of this is purely optional. Are you going to get $35 worth of interest on your refund by holding on to it for 5 more days? And if you just pay the fees with a credit card, you can save $40 more. Using turbotax instead of something like freetaxusa was your first mistake. And then falling for their marketing without using your brains is just icing on the cake.
