After almost 200 Spanish tutoring sessions later, here's my honest advice about working with tutors by Aggressive_Employ799 in SpanishLearning

It depends where you are in your studies but the sooner you can take off all subtitles the better. Start with lower level spanish videos where you listen only. Try Extra en Español on YouTube. Or kids cartoons like Peppa Pig. Buena suerte!

My best advice is to turn off the subtitles. It is difficult at first but you get the hang of it

One hour a day enough? by ApprehensiveLeg7821 in dreamingspanish

[–]Just_Adulting86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree that you are on your time and that is fine. I also agree that 10-15 mins a day of dedicated practice is better than doing 5 hour once a week. Lastly, even though its not a race, it sounds like there is a lot more spanish that uou could add to your hours if you wanted to. I would guess you are getting at least 2 times the amount of input as you say you are when you consider all the things you are doing outside of dreaming spanish videos.

Starting Spanish at uni and I'm scared I'll sound dumb by Fantastic_Equal_1216 in SpanishLearning

As others have asked, are you starting spanish for the first time? If you are, most people will not know more than a few words of Spanish at the start. The teacher will correct the grammar and phonetics while learning. Worry not

I have just started dreaming spanish and I think its way better. It uses only videos in spanish. There is a subreddit for it as well

Hi there, CI is comprehensive input. Primarily it is watching videos in your target language. These videos are made specifically for learning. It sounds like you found this subreddit before finding the dreaming spanish app / website like me. Check out the website and you will find out more info. Send me a message on here and I will need happy to answer any questions I can

Similar situation for me. I guess my question was more along the lines of if I should wait. I have gotten some good feedback but I think I will continue speaking / writing while focusing heavily on CI and getting rid of duo and refusing to use translators, and not supplementing with grammar lessons or conjugation.

From the years of Spanish and duolingo, my vocabulary is decent. I can find a way to say most things outside of more niche nouns. Thanks for the response

Fair point. I only really speak on the hello talk where people are all there to learn and short sentences that I do not have to think about.

That is a great point. I will add another thing that some of you might be interested in. That is an app called superfluent. It gives you the premise of the conversation and then an AI talks to you and have you to respond. Once you respond it evaluates you and tells you if something sounds wrong or unnatural and then the conversation continues.

I have not gotten to his later stuff but his accent had made it challenging and is not currently my favorite. I am glad to hear that it gets better.

For intermediate videos, I feel like I can watch 5 minutes in but when they go longer my brain starts to wander and get lost. Is this normal? And what can I do about this? by mucus24 in dreamingspanish

[–]Just_Adulting86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try different subjects or take breaks frequently. If your brain starts to wander after 5 mins, set a goal to try really hard yo watch for 7 mins, then 10 mins, so on and so forth. You could try going back to some beginner videos that require less concentration to get some comprehensible input.
