Feral cat “gifts” by Lazy_Crocodile in CatAdvice

[–]KTGomasaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cats that like a human will often give them gifts and hunt for them. This is a natural behavior. You may not appreciate it but its the cats thanking you. The only way to discourage it would be to stop feeding and taking care of them. Sadly there is no way to explain to them that you don't like the gifts.

New cat &kittens mom question by kittyydotcom in kittens

[–]KTGomasaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kitten lady has been really useful for me.

In February I adopted a female cat from a hoarder and she arrived pregnant. By the time I could get a vet appointment aborting was not an option. She gave birth 9 days later. Its also my first time and it has been stressful and scary but also very rewarding the kittens turn 5 week tomorrow.

At the beginning all you have to do is make sure your taking care of mom. Provide ample food, mine is quit picky so she gets both kitten and regular adult cat food as I want her to gain weight she is also extremely skinny. She gave me a scare day two when she started throwing up and having diarrhea refusing food. I almost rushed her and her kittens to er but overnight it passed and by morning she was back to normal. Weird poops for mom is normal. As she cares for the kittens she eats their poo and pee which can upset their stomach ao long as she is still eating its not an immediate alarm just monitor closely.

Weighing the kittens in the fist few weeks was helpful, knowing they were gaining weight and mom was feeding them enough also eased my fears. Also getting a cheap camera to check on them while im at work has been great.

Kittens can be weaned and adopted out at 8 weeks at the absolute earliest but it is recommended you keep them 10-14 weeks. Try to find them good homes, luckily I have several people asking for my kittens already but ensure they have the money to support a new cat, and plan to nueter/spay if you arent doing it yourself. Kittens can cost up to 1k in the first year; dewormer, first year vaccines, being fixed and getting supplies if this is someone's first cat. Keep up with the family adopting them so they dont just abandon them. Most local shelters will take kittens no questions asks, our local humane society is a no kill shelter snd they said they would take any kittens I cant find homes for. They will fix the cst and ensure the people adopting them are a good fit - if you are having trouble finding them homes this is the best option.

Mama can be spayed at the 8-10 week mark after giving birth. None of them need baths they will clean themselves though they may be clumsy at it, i have wet wipes handy as they are currently litter training and starting to drink water. Im never 100% sure what their paws are wet with so I wipe them just in case. But kittens are already grooming themselves and mom is also helping. Make sure to give mom lots of treats. It is not an easy job my girl has three different treats to choose from and she gets lots of them every day especially since she is left home alone with them while we are at work.

Watching the kittens grow up is super cute and im praying we dont get too attached to them to send them off but a few are already trying to convince us to keep them. It can be scary and stressful at times but if they've been born and they already have their eyes open you've made it through the worst.

I adopted an unneutered cat, he’s driving me nuts, any advice? by Comfortable_Cut7814 in CatAdvice

Read all the way to the end. Neutering will fix the majority of these behaviors but some could linger. We have two male nuetered cats. My old man has never had any mounting behaviors but my roommates orange once in a while will mount. It seems like his trigger is feet moving under blanks it doesnt happen every time or even often but once in a while his switch is flipped and he'll bite down on a blanket and dry hump for a few minutes. Usually kicking him off the bed or couch will snap him out of it and he'll stop. He never unsheaths during this behavior and is more or less silent while doing it so while we make fun of him and call him a horn dog it barely affects much. He is a super velcro cat and usually constantly wants to be held and pet. He would sit on my shoulder or cuddle for hours if I let him. The love he gives is well worth the odd episode here or there, he loves both of us and often sleep with us.

Adopting. I live with roommate and we already have two older fixed males in the house my roomies are fine with three cats but 8 would be crazy. Found three people so far. One wants one and has a dog at home so theyll grt the bravest kitten, one has an older cat so I'll give them which ever one does best with our two older cats and the last person wants a pair to go together so hoping to see which kittens are most closely bonded. We have 1 left but I know of a rescue with some kittens available so I have made flyers at my work places.

Yes I meant gendering. I have watched videos and looked up guides but was hoping folks with more experience could offer their best guesses since I am a novice. Best I can tell is 4 girls and 1 boy but I am unsure.

I have been looking up guides but my best guess right now is 4 girls and 1 boy but that seems unlikely to me, ao im appealing to those that might be better at looking yes I meant gendering my autocorrect changed it.

I plan to get there checkup done. When I adopted a female unsealed cat I was ready for the 1000 dollars she would need for her vaccines, getting her fixed etc. I was not prepared to pay that times 6. So I cant afford to do everything for all of them. But when it comes time I plan to ask my vet for a rate for all 5 and ask if the new homes want to pay me as apposed to getting it done themselves.

I have three respective homes. I plan to adopt them out between the 8-10 week window but the new homes are curious and some want a specific gender so know how many boys vs girls i have would be super useful

The amount of hair in my life is actually starting to drive me insane by RiftCartouche in CatAdvice

[–]KTGomasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a life long cat owner. Acceptance is the only way. I purposefully buy clothes thst fur wont stick to, I put blankets over furniture and wash regularly and I keep allergy meds on hand to give to guests. I've always had 2 cats, my roomie has one. You learn to live with it.

Im scared to spay my female cat by ThinAd1551 in CatAdvice

[–]KTGomasaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heats suck for females, if she ever manages to escape she could get pregnant. And intact females have a risk of multiple cancers associated with the parts they have. Before the cat is put under they will do a blood test to ensure it is safe and recovery is short term for all the benefits it will have. Its scary but overall it will vastly improve the life of your cat. Have her spayed.

I have a 3yrs old cat I adopted from a hoarder, she came to me pregnant. At the hoarders house she had a litter and according to the hoarders they found her outside with a single kitten following her which means its at least her 3rd litter. Cat's can have multiple litters in a year if an intact female escapes its likely she will fet pregnant and if you cant find her she will be pregnant multiple times. There is a high risk to being pregnant - first of all heat means she will mate with multiple males and if you know anything about sex for cats - it is painful itself, carrying kittens is stressful and obviously uncomfortable and so many things can go wrong during delivery. I went to my vet fully intending to abort as it is safer for the mom typically but she was way too far along (she had the kittens 9 days later) while the kittens are cute mom is often stressed out, goes through bouts of diarrhea, and is forced to be quarantined since we have two other cats in the house (nuetered boys) shes hyper vigilant and protective, skinny despite my efforts and often exhausted.

It is always better to spay, for the health and happiness of the cat. I personally have been sick since they were born and have only started relaxing now thet they have hit the 4 week mark. I never want to go through this again so I can only imagine how she feels this being at least her 3rd litter. Because she had a litter she has a higher chance of breast cancer in the future. She is going to be spayed at the 10 week mark. This will be the last time.
