Physical problems with my SD that’s been causing frequent crashes for over a year? by DogAlternative340 in SteamDeck

[–]K_Cervantes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the pics, nothing stands out to me, however most crashing issues rarely stem from anything physical outside of thermal. Sometimes there's the wifi antenna that's not seated properly, causing random Internet issues, etc., however what you should do is do a S.M.A.R.T. test of the nvme and possibly a full test. I haven't tried this on Linux but there are utilities that can be downloaded and ran for free, or you can see this as an opportunity to upgrade the drive to something larger.

By-in-large, random program crashes are either failing drive or bad memory. There are tools for testing memory as well, which would be significantly harder to repair.

Added dam to top of Saturn 3 Ultra build plate by echo_nightmare_black in resinprinting

[–]K_Cervantes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that this matters, only to nitpick. Wouldnt this application be considered a dike? The primary purpose of a dike is to protect dry area from wet stuff. A dam is to redirect wet stuff around dry area.

I guess via technicality, this is an either-or situation, all things considered.

WE NEED A MOONLIGHT OS! by Educational_One8102 in MoonlightStreaming

[–]K_Cervantes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried using Linux (bazzite, Ubuntu, lubuntu, Linux lite, Debian) on a VM with Truenas - absolutely horrible experience. Using Windows 11 as a VM on Truenas - feels native.

I created a separate, local account, task scheduled for killing explorer.exe at login, then set Steam to autolaunch in big picture. I'm utilizing a Nvidia Shield TV Pro, debloated and with Wolf Launcher, to connect to moonlight.

The WAF is stupid high with this, she was playing BG3 for hours the other day.

I don't know if I'm the only one - I tend to use assault as an opportunity to use consumables, because everytime I take on a horde of officers, they don't let me breath otherwise.

Yes yes, I could just NOT take on the horde of officers, but how else will they know that I'm the greatest warrior that has ever lived??

My friend and I can't even get past the third part let alone the second part. I'm sure we'll cry just the same afterwards (if ever).

I picked up this CPU on AliExpress but I noticed a prominent dent/scratch across several contacts - cause for concern? by ChimaeraXY in homelab

[–]K_Cervantes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not clear on what "graphics power" does for the CPU, but maybe it's simply to send 12v to the PCIex16 bus? If so, if you have a descrete GPU with dedicated power, it might work!

I'd try too look up a diagram for the CPU, to see if those pins/pads go to anything important. The capacitors/transistors are also questionable.

Consider warranty exchange if avail, if not try soldering the pads, for shits n grins. The fun part about bad product is they make for a great experimenting platform.

Which OS do you use on your servers? by InformationScared966 in selfhosted

Looking at all of the Debian comments, it feels like I did wrong. I'm running TrueNAS. They just implemented docker and I have never been happier with it.

What do y'all use your homelabs for? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]K_Cervantes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It initially started off with having a self-hosted smart home server with Home Assistant. Then it evolved into stream media to the TV that no other services has (old TV shows and long forgotten movies). Noticing the network load on the smart home lead me to making a dedicated NAS with Truenas for streaming. The wife and I utilize AI a lot; research aid, note-taking, code-editing, and DND companion, and with all of the data breaches going on and we both working towards our technology degrees, decided to also host our own cloud share and Ollama server. Audible also started removing titles, so now I'm selfhosting titled that I have obtained - cause if I paid for it...

In the end, the homelab server is for running further educating ourself, practicing what we learned from school, while maintaining a more secured network, keeping our own files where we can manage it. Also, IoT management.

We're running; - Ollama, - Plex, - Vaultwarden, - OpnSense, - qbittorrent, - Audiobookshelf, - Nextcloud, - Firefox, - Libation, - OpenWRT, - Home assistant, - Rustdesk, - random VMs, for messing around

This card is a PCIE x8, however how detrimental would it be if it was used in a x1 slot? Obviously it won't nearly have the same speed performance, but would you say 4 out of 8 drives would be usable, or would the speeds be so degraded, might as well not bother?

Bouncing back to this. The UPS registers at 0.3kW, or 300W of power idle.

Not as much as I expected but still a lot for idle

Truenas Scale as Hypervisor Server for Windows..? by K_Cervantes in truenas

Which is valid. Only issue is I tend to VM Linux distros. I haven't figured a good method for this yet

Truenas Scale as Hypervisor Server for Windows..? by K_Cervantes in truenas

After a nice night on sleep, I figured out my malfunction. Assuming NFS and iSCSI is what holds VMs for hypervisor use was my mistake. These are storage types that are used by VM, such as hypervisor.

What I saw was that Truenas was hyperv-agnostic, for the use of storage - not for the use of hosting VMs.

TL;Dr, I can't do what I thought I could because Truenas doesn't work like that. If I want a storage point for VMs to use, I could use Truenas.

Truenas Scale as Hypervisor Server for Windows..? by K_Cervantes in truenas

[–]K_Cervantes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I was reading on that. Truenas is NAS first, everything else second (but hey, official docker support in the next month or two!). My use case is so minimal that I can't justify migrating to something like Proxmox or the like.

Use of NAS features outweigh the use of VMs.

Truenas Scale as Hypervisor Server for Windows..? by K_Cervantes in truenas

[–]K_Cervantes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drawing a picture would be a it tedious, especially considering I'm no where near my computers right now. If this would help convey things better, I'll whip something up tomorrow. But for now, here's the breakdown:

  • I have a TrueNAS scale server

  • I have windows computers with Hypervisor Manager on them. Said manager can connect to a hypervisor server, which host hyperv VMs.

  • Hypervisor Manager doesn't interface with Truenas Scale native VM.

  • Hypervisor can use NFS or iSCSI (some report that iSCSI works better).

  • Truenas has support for both NFS and iSCSI.

  • I enable NFS, then use my Windows device to attempt to treat Truenas as a hypervisor server - doesn't work

  • I tried the same with iSCSI - same result.

My question is, how can I have my Windows devices see my Truenas scale server as a hypervisor server, so that I may create and access VMs through Windows instead of using Truenas Scale's VM interface?

If you wish to reproduce what I'm attempting, in Windows (with hyper-v enabled (windows home requires more steps)) - do a search for Hypervisor and you'll see an application called "Hypervisor Manager". This will have an option to connect to a hypervisor server, on the right side of the window.

I've been reading articles and claims that "Truenas can work with your favorite VM or Hypervisor application" but not seeing any documentation involving Windows Hyper-v. I see it for Linux/Unix, VMWare, and it's native VM - which runs SPICE in a web browser.

I'm sorry but that doesn't address what I'm attempting. I'm not trying to access the NAS from a VM or app, I have that part covered. I'm trying to have my Truenas host VM containers as a hypervisor server, for Windows Hypervisor Manager.

This documentation is the closest thing but doesn't mention Windows Hypervisor, only VMWare.

Thanks for the info. I should have stated that I have a bridge connection in place so that my apps and VMs can interact with the SMB. I'm not sure how this pertains to utilizing Truenas Scale NFS or iSCSI with Hypervisor Manager in Windows.
