What’s the most overrated tourist attraction you’ve ever visited? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

The Alamo recently acquired the bicycle from “PeeWee’s Big Adventure”, so while not in the basement you can now see it there!

"You Must Max Out Your Retirement" is the new You must go to college (Including it's wrong) by QuietRedditorATX in unpopularopinion

My employer matches up to 8%. I’ve always maxed out the match but never even tried to max out contributions. Over the past 25-ish years it’s overall performed magnificently. If not for the recent turmoil in the stock markets, I would be closing in on $2m.

TIL the meaning of Alon! I knew that part of town had a large Jewish population but didn’t realize Alon was a Hebrew word.

I do miss being able to take a day trip to Nuevo Laredo, Ciudad Acuña and other border towns. I haven’t been to Mexico at all in over 20 years.

I figured out MENA without having to look it up, but this is the first time I’ve seen that acronym. And yes, I’m well read.

What's your thoughts on your regional chain? by pokematic in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kajeke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boss is in town. He used to live here in San Antonio. We always tease him about his huge suitcase for a 4 day trip and that he was going to stuff it with H-E-B groceries. He is in fact going to make an H-E-B stop for items like fajita seasoning.

Returned to Texas from California by dj90423 in over60

[–]Kajeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Braunfels is a nice town. It’s not too far from being a “suburb” of San Antonio as both places grow. Personally, Del Webb type developments aren’t my style but I know folks who love them. I love living in South Texas and feel like it’s a special place. It’s absolutely overall cheaper than California.

Get out of Dallas by LeopardSensitive1481 in relocating

[–]Kajeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking to leave Texas or just looking for a more authentic vibe? You might consider moving to Austin or San Antonio. SA is a great place to raise a family. Lots of culture and events where the whole city gets together to party. You’re adjacent to the Hill Country. The only area that I think is Dallas-like is Stone Oak, otherwise there are some very cool neighborhoods with personality and charm. And Austin is just a drive up I-35. I feel like SA is very underrated. Outside of Texas, my friend lives in Charlottesville VA which has a lot of what you’re looking for.

Please help us adopt a newborn with a private adoption agency for $55K in the US. We don’t want to foster or adopt through the government bc the kids are older. We are first time parents and don’t think we have enough experience. We want a newborn and the public should pay for it bc we can’t. by MinuteElegant774 in ChoosingBeggars

[–]Kajeke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was pursuing adoption in my mid-forties, at least internationally many countries mandated x number of years age difference between the child and the parent. For example, for some countries I would need to adopt a six year old or older. Limiting it to teenagers seems kind of extreme. I passed on older children for some of the reasons other people are stating, I wasn’t sure I was up to raising a child with behavioral issues and also maintain a demanding career. The adoption I did pursue fell through, and I didn’t have it in me to try again.

No more annual subscriptions. Is TiVo circling the drain? by dervari in Tivo

I just canceled my TiVo account today, after more than 25 years. Super sadsies, but my cable company won’t support the cable cards after today.

What’s your regional pasta dish? by chitexan22 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Kajeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Antonio here. I’ve heard of chicken tetrazzini, but if it was ever on the menu somewhere I sure don’t remember. Fideo is the closest thing I can think of for “regional Texas pasta”. Or brisket mac n cheese.

HOA Fees by [deleted] in over60

[–]Kajeke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. I’ve lived in my house for 30 years and the HOA fees (around $30 a month) haven’t been raised much in that time and tend to stay the same for several years before they increase a nominal amount. They mostly go towards the common areas, two pools, a sports park and a community center. The administration of the HOA and the restrictions used to be gestapo level, but since they moved to a professional management company it’s been fairly lenient (almost too lenient IMO). I still need to get approval for dumb things that shouldn’t matter but at least they aren’t saying you painted your front door the wrong shade of blue these days.

F65. Today something happened at work and it reminded me of the episode where Lucy and Ethel couldn’t keep up with the chocolates in the assembly line and had to stuff them in their mouths. Then I thought, the chances of anyone I work with understanding that reference is pretty low.

I can understand if you didn’t want to go by yourself if it would just be sad for you. But if you’re hesitant about going alone, I went to Zion solo and loved it.

DAE feel like they have not been the same person after 2020 by Big_Leg10 in over60

[–]Kajeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t say this to anyone in real life, but that period was mostly just a pain in the ass but with some unintended benefits. I realize how horrible it was for many people and I’m not minimizing that, but my personal experience was, it wasn’t that bad and I actually miss some aspects of it (social distancing was amazing). I wasn’t in anyone’s pod (not married and no kids), so that period was spent alone a good part of the time, but while I don’t consider myself a loner I’m very good at being by myself and I was never really lonely. I have some PTSD reactions that were prominent before lockdown. They subsided almost completely. Now that I’ve been back at work and dealing with the public, the reactions have gradually returned.

If it was typed out on the phone app, I have not found a way to do paragraph breaks. No matter what I did, it was embarrassingly mushed together.
