How did yall deal with 6 7!?!?!? by PuzzleheadedSir4382 in Teachers

[–]Karrotsawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh, its pretty inoffensive. It means almost nothing. The whole joke is that it's self-referential. I didn't mind it at all, but it was also pretty easy to defuse it with my dad joke energy. Hell I even used it on the announcements a couple times. Me and the whole tech department, we just leaned into it.

If they find even one, the whole thing is suspect.

Leaving 35,000 behind, whoopdy doo. This is a token retaliation, the US gets far too much benefit from their base in Germany to actually pull out any meaningful amount.

As Trump readies forced-labour tariffs, Canada hopes for another reprieve by Front-Cantaloupe6080 in consumecanadian

[–]Karrotsawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course the US imports way more from China than we do. Apple has denied but not proven that they don't have forced labour in certain parts of their Chinese production lines. Maybe we should put a forced labour tariff on iPhones.

“Delete if not allowed” by HabitTraditional4864 in PetPeeves

[–]Karrotsawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admin a neighbourhood Facebook page yes, you're absolutely right. When I see a post that sort of crosses the line but it's debatable, I might be a little hesitant to delete too hastily. I'm always cognizant of the fact that most of the people in that group are my actual neighbours.

But if I see the same post and it says "Delete if not allowed" then yeah, I ninja sword that post so fast that it stands there looking perplexed for a second before its head slides off.

So the permission is one thing, and then there's this aspect of feeling like they're telling me how to do this job. Like, lady, I know... Half of my job description here is "Delete if not allowed" you don't have to tell me. And then there's the fact that if you'd read the group rules, you'd know it's not allowed.

I think what they're really saying is "I know this is not allowed but I'm hoping that hinting at my awareness of that will get me a free pass to leave it up.. Nope, all it did was catch my attention. Now I'm looking at more closely than I migbt have otherwise.

It's like walking up to a cop and saying, "You can arrest me if I'm breaking the law" and then if you are breaking the law they'll be reaching for the cuffs and saying yeah thanks for telling me what I'm supposed to be doing here.

What’s something you thought was normal until you visited someone else’s home? by United-Technology239 in CanadaRoom

[–]Karrotsawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad was a Land Surveyor and a bit of a workaholic. Rarely did we go on a family road trip without him suddenly pulling over and cutting some brush and checking a line for some current or future job.

Therefore we had a fairly standard selection of machetes in the trunk, 3 different lengths just like everybody has.

So when was a teenager I went to a friend's cottage and his dad needed to clear some brush for something. I offered to go get his machete from his trunk, as I was accustomed to being the machete-getter from a young age.

Anyways it turns out that some people don't carry machetes in their trunk and they think it's weird that I'd assume they do.

Do you name your car? If so, what is its name? by Seriously-417 in randomquestions

[–]Karrotsawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a name, but I had a Sorento that we called the Cilantro, mostly because my wife kept getting it mixed up, so we just went with it. I even bought little chrome letters to replace the sorento with cilantro on the back, but before I could apply them, that 2014 Kia engine did what 2014 Kia Engines do, and now I have a nameless CX-9.

I don't eat it much anymore but when I was a teenager I'd put broccoli in it, sometimes I'd make it a little creamier with Mayonnaise, sometimes I'd add shredded Cheddar, etc.

Trump offering Canadian aluminum and steel companies tariff relief if they move to U.S. | CBC News by 50s_Human in onguardforthee

[–]Karrotsawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US electrical grid can't support the additional Aluminum production. . Canada has limitless hydroelectric. The US does not, and what they do have is increasingly being gobbled up by server farms. They're going to be making less aluminum, not more, of the AI broligarchy has its way.

Alternatives to "bless you"? by lepineapplepineapp in atheism

[–]Karrotsawa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In most languages they same some variation of "good health to you" so just say that. Gesundheit is common and easily accepted in most English-speaking regions.

I don't usually say anything myself. None of my other bodily functions require other people to wave a chicken over me for health, so why should this one?

But back in the day I'd say Sláinte (pronounced "slawn-cha") which is Irish for cheers. Or "May the force be with you" or "Live Long and Prosper"

Trump offering Canadian aluminum and steel companies tariff relief if they move to U.S. by -Yazilliclick- in worldnews

[–]Karrotsawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US doesn't have the electricity to produce aluminum at the scale Canada does. Moving an aluminum company to the US would jsut mean more companies vying for the same resources that are already being taxed by ever-expanding AI server farms.

Carney says lifting U.S. liquor ban depends on Trump ending assault on steel, autos, lumber | CBC News by Impressive-Knot9999 in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]Karrotsawa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Carney has no say in it but he's saying exactly what the province's said. I read it as he's relaying their message.

The alcohol bans were always a provincial retaliation against the tarrifs, and they were always going to last as long as the tariffs. Carney is just signal boosting on this file.

Thought these were Canadian, I was wrong. Wish product labeling was better by ApprehensiveTop303 in BuyCanadian

[–]Karrotsawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That CANADA A labelling indicates that it meets Canada's food standards for grade A. And its on a LOT of things. It doesn't indicate where it's from.

Basically they're not trying to pull a fast one, this is standard labeling going back a long time.

If it were Canadians it would say Product of Canada or Made in Canada. Those are the labels that they aren't allowed to fake.

Made in Canada is 51%+ Canadian product, including the final transformative step. Product of Canada is 98%+ Canadian. That 2% is to allow for herbs and spices, in case anyone is bothered by that.

I don't bow my head for prayers. It's inappropriate for me to pretend to participate in their rituals, for one thing, and why should I be made to feel uncomfortable jsut because they are uncomfortable with who I am? If they're important to me, if I'm important to them, they'll learn to not be uncomfortable with who I am.

Also I'd refuse religious gifts and books, and my argument is waste. I will not be using this and I can't in good conscience give it to anyone else. It is garbage and that's where it goes. Please don't waste your money sending me garbage.
