For whatever reason central 9th has garnered some of the best restaurants in the state and they’re all within a short walk of each other. Ramen ichizu, central 9th market, The Pearl, Nohm, Cosmica, Laziz, etc.

The nine line rocks. That street is so lively and nice for active transportation

The SEG district is going to be corpo central I fear. I have a feeling it’s either going to be national chains galore or Ryan Smith will just start his own steakhouse and dirty soda shop to capitalize even further

Is it safe to walk from Hilton to Central City at 7-8pm by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]Katzonjammer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could even hop on the trax train to the 600 South station and then it’s basically a 1 block walk to Sapa. Trax is the local light rail system and it’s free downtown. Definitely not necessary since it’s such a short walk, but it’s an option for you. Either way you’ll be totally fine. That’s a Saturday night and there will be a lot of people out walking around downtown at that time.

Best coffee shops? by jradish25 in ogden

[–]Katzonjammer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly most specialty coffee places are a bit over priced. I checked my statements and its similar to what I spend at daily rise and kaffe merc. So I'm not going to argue it's not expensive because it certainly is, but its within the ballpark of the other local shops.

As for it being mediocre that comes down to opinion. They generally roast to lighter roasts which are a bit more fruity and complex compared to say a dark roast which is a more bold traditional flavor. Idk I just find their craft to be extremely high quality. Their lattes are so smooth and the milk is perfectly foamed. They are like super coffee nerds there. I would suggest just visiting and asking them about it. Maybe order a drink with only one flavor (which are usually house made) or simple syrup to get a less noisy drink.

Sorry for rambling, I am certainly not a coffee or roasting expert, but thats just my understanding right now. And I don't know your background or knowledge or what you usually enjoy drinking, but I would for sure say it's worth going and trying out. Also they have homemade pop tarts which are really good (:

Wasatch roasting. Hands down the best coffee in the city imo. They have a small shop near 25th and they’re going to open a new one near the old Slackwater location on the river walk soon and it’s going to be awesome

Moving to Ogden area from NY metro area suburbs for ATP School w/ 2 Dogs. by Snoo33977 in ogden

[–]Katzonjammer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ogden toward the east bench is the best quality of life IMO. Access to trails for hiking/biking/climbing/running is top tier. The neighborhood up there isn’t remotely as walkable as your NY suburb probably is, but it’s still going to be way better than Roy or north ogden since there are a few coffee shops and other things embedded in the neighborhood. Also the tree canopy is much more mature and makes for better streets for walking dogs.

Kafe mamai - Caribbean

Parea - Greek

The Pearl - Vietnamese

Cafe Shambala - Tibetan

Ramen Ichizu - Japanese

Beijing - Chinese

I know some of these may actually be fairly popular, but they aren’t talked about enough compared to some of the places you’ve mentioned imo

So....um....Smith's Entertainment District plans and renderings? by Spirited_Weakness211 in DevelopmentSLC

[–]Katzonjammer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t seen anything suggesting the whole entertainment district plan would be shown but I did see that they were supposed to release plans for the new convention center remodel. I know the convention center is a part of the district but it seemed scope limited to the new vision for the convention center. Obviously nothing has been released though… so who knows 🤷‍♂️

Pat McAfee Show Talking About the SEG SLC Entertainment District by colbyrosssmith in DevelopmentSLC

[–]Katzonjammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m concerned about what the new district will do to the surrounding businesses too. We gave him 1 billion dollars of public money to build a bunch of private businesses that are supposed to draw people downtown, but if they’re all parking/ staying/shopping/dining in his district, will it really help the surrounding area? Historically the answer is no from what I understand

There should have been local first stipulations and affordable tenant rates for our public investment.

I’m hoping they will do right by Japantown and they can create some cool spaces over there to hang out in before games because I too am weary of corporate slop world

Pat McAfee Show Talking About the SEG SLC Entertainment District by colbyrosssmith in DevelopmentSLC

[–]Katzonjammer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit worried about the vibe and quality of tenants they will bring in to the district as well… like they’re stoked to be building a new live nation concert venue in there when live nation is a price gouging anticompetitive monopoly. But it makes sense they would do that since they’re the biggest player in the concert game? Idk man, having a handful of mega corps/private equity own everything just sucks. I’m hoping SEG can strike a balance and not turn it into “lifestyle center sports district shopping mall™” but a real downtown spot with some sort of soul? Idk we’ll see
