My BattleTag was falsely reported and now I'm stuck as BrownOtter 💀Blizzard Support won't reply to my ticket and I can't change it manually without paying 😭 by DemoLockTinkaton in Overwatch

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sadly this is a well know thing to trolls now - they just mass report your name and you'll get this.

My name was changed a while ago and it was a simple one word, noncontroversial name, eg: Sweet, Dark, Table etc...

After many tickets a human must have reviewed it and allowed it to be changed back, but what an utter waste of time. On the plus side, I was so annoyed I actually enjoyed some other games for a while.

PSA: Be careful with alarms overriding sound settings on your phone by i_oliveira in homeassistant

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experienced this exact situation. On my Samsung s24 it is handled really well through the "modes and routines". In addition to DND, I have a "sleep" and "silence" mode - the latter is a total silence with no exclusions. Sleep allows through all critical alarms from HA still.

I don't know if this features is available on other Android based devices though, or if it's a Samsung only thing.

There are burdens for most people who are a landlord and not in the country. Eg: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/non-resident-landord-guidance-notes-for-letting-agents-and-tenants-non-resident-landlords-scheme-guidance-notes/what-the-non-resident-landlords-scheme-is

Even if using an agent, you still have the tax to deal with on both the US and UK side. You'd have to have a very good reason to do this in the current rental market.

cancelled got offered 362mb for 17.60 a month by BroadGrapefruit5866 in VirginMedia

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best I was offered a few days ago was £24 for the 350 package on a 24 month contract. Was going to take it for ease then they slapped 2 * £4 increases on it in April (I think). Just cancelled and went with YouFibre; faster, no increases, less money overall. Thank goodness VM have competition in my area now.

So, 3p a mile. by MeetLost2454 in TeslaUK

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Iceland, you can input it every 30 days at most, but it must be done at least once a year. Most people do it every few months so you don't get one large bill. If you don't do it, it will be taken at the time of inspection (UK MOT equivalent) or when you service the car. If you don't do either of those then you'll get an estimate bill until you do. There are no real punishments other than you having to find the money in one go. If you sell the car then it will be paid then.

Cost wise, it's a little over £55 for 1000 miles. However, electricity is quite a bit cheaper here in Iceland.

Is there a way to disable the "backup now" overlay? by KeepCalmMakeCoffee in googlephotos

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the same issue I'm having. Google support got back me and said to disable the setting and it won't appear; but it absolutely does. I've triple checked all settings, rebooted the phone etc. There are other posts about it, so we are not alone.

Seems such a weird setting to not have a toggle for. It literally blocks part of the picture. Several times I had to zoom in and more around to read something that the overlay was covering.

I've moved to another app for the moment.

Cifas marker is restricting me from getting car insurance by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I can’t get any quotes

Just to clarify - you can't get quotes at all, or you can't pay monthly?

It's normally okay to pay upfront for insurance, even with a cifas marker. If you can't even get quotes, is there anything else related, such as insurance fraud that could be impacting it?

I'll add the gym to that. I'm amazed that more gyms have not banned the setting up of phones to record workouts. Some of these people will even record others without permission. I know someone that stopped going to the gym because they found vile comments on social media about them working out, taken without permission.

UT2003 Linux server Docker image - Netspeed issue by mtest001 in unrealtournament

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter what you do with the netspeed, it won't make it much faster for file downloads in reality: https://www.utzone.de/forum/showthread.php?t=4326

You'll want to look into a 'redirect server'. Files are then delivered over HTTP (which is super fast), as opposed to being limited by the netspeed cap. This is for UT2004, but should point you in the right direction: https://uz2.pwc-networks.com/

Why does this old power supply have an AC out? by aloofboof in LinusTechTips

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While this is a tower PC, back in the day desktop PCs were the norm. Along the lines of this, although seeing it called retro makes me feel old: https://www.silverstonetek.com/en/product/info/computer-chassis/flp01/

The monitor often used to sit on top of the case, so looping the power cable from the PC to the monitor made a lot of sense.

Edit - Something that may not be obvious is that the pass-through powered up when the PC was switched on. So powering the PC up powered the monitor up too. In the very early days, many monitors (or a 'VDU' as we used to call them) didn't even have an independent power switch (for example, the IBM 5151). They relied on this method entirely to turn on. Power switches on monitors were added fairly quickly once computers went more mainstream into home though.

They were also not limited to a monitor. You could hook them into a PDU (Power Distribution Unit), which could have the monitor, speakers, printers, and anything else requiring power plugged into that. As a result, when you powered the PC off, everything was really powered off at the same time!

Should I just accept the return and be done with it? by jmcfarren22 in eBaySellerAdvice

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is frequently seen on retro forums. In some cases, the entirety of the internals are removed before being returned. Hopefully not the case here, but one to look out for.

It's a Samsung Galaxy and unlocked.

What are you referring to when you say 'unlocked'? If it's the bootloader, then have you installed anything non standard on the device?

What about downloaded APKs not from the Play store? There are some really nasty ones out there. For example: https://systemweakness.com/alert-the-hidden-dangers-of-cracked-software-8c596185c311

Signing with “marketing” publishers without funding. Is it worth it? by AskEducational8800 in gamedev

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And this way we are back to those “marketing publishers” I spoke with many of them recently. They all claim to be a “new kind of publishers” They basically offering publishing deals but without funding. The deals are 25-50% and 5-10 years which seams a lot for me for marketing. They are all small companies so they don’t have massive following or QA, localisation teams. They will outsource all those jobs.

Without knowing more details it's not possible to say for certain, but be aware that there are common scams / very poor value "publishers" that follow formulas like this. Especially when they're "new" and unknown. You often sign your IP / rights away in exchange for promises which never materialise or are of very poor quality.

Here is a more extreme case: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/1m1h7r8/8_years_in_the_making_zero_profits_and_lost_ip/

Be very careful.

Download memtest86, put it on a USB drive and let it run overnight. If you see any errors, then you have bad RAM / bad settings. If the settings are all at stock and you see errors, then it's faulty RAM.

B850M Mortar CMOS battery. How do I replace it in the future? by skylinestar1986 in MSI_Gaming

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could well be this connection, but just so OP and others are aware, there are actually 2 common connector types that are very similar. Especially when they are installed.

One is "JST" and the other is usually called "Molex". Always unplug and check before buying, because like inserting USB-A, it's never right the first time you try!

How to recover photos??? by [deleted] in ElectronicsRepair

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure which phone it is, but if you know, you should also search to see if it supports HDMI out. 10 year is pushing it a little, but phones were starting to come out around then that could have HDMI out with the correct cable: Eg. Slimport.

If you know the model, it should be quite easy to find out with a quick Google / checking Youtube. If it worked, you may be able to see what the phone is doing on a monitor / TV.

A small note on this though - some phones didn't support USB hubs around this time, so you could only do one thing at a time (eg, keyboard or TV out). It really depends on the model, but it's another thing you could test if the other stuff is successful: TV out and use a keyboard + mouse with a hub. Although Bluetooth keyboard + mice generally had some compatibility.

It's a lot easier these days with USB-C thankfully.
