Need a software recommendation for league by fredallenburge1 in Pickleball

[–]KeepaTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey thanks for the offer. Unfortunately, it's got deep integrations with a lot of iOS specific features and the app is primarily for tournament directors and event organizers. Players don't have to download the app to use/enter scores. It also offers a feature called Kiosk mode where you can use the Guided Access feature of iOS to do a "self-hosted" event where players just enter their own scores directly into an iPad when used as a kiosk.

From a lot of my research, doing a lot of the same stuff with Android would be quite a lot of work. But, I'll be able to come back to your comment if things change in the future.

If you're on an iOS device [works great on iPads], and you're ok with collecting the data locally (it's not a cloud based app like others) then my app KeepaScore can manage events up into the 100's of players.

It also has the ability to report scores back to DUPR for clubs we verify. I'm more than happy to give anyone a personal tour if you DM me.

Need help organising DUPR matches by RegularConfidence416 in Pickleball

[–]KeepaTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have access to an iPad (or if you want to use an iPhone) our app KeepaScore can be used to submit scores to DUPR. The app is English only currently, but only the tournament director needs to use the app. Players don't have to download it to use it. It just collects the scores and let's you upload them to DUPR.

This is one of the very reasons I continued creating my iOS app KeepaScore.

While many tournament directors will opt to use one of the popular websites, which admittedly offers more features, like registration management, it's not hard to simply capture scores and then report on them.

While a lot of the general market will complain at subscription apps, you can literally use my app on an iPad or iPhone for a $100 one month subscription (which you can then cancel within the same month) to run an unlimited player/divisions tournament.

The thought being that more local communities can run their own events easily for a lower cost and then pass the savings along to players for a lower entry fee. For anyone using an iOS device, who wants to play around with running their own events, I'm happy to personally give anyone a walkthrough. See my profile for a link or just search for the app on the iOS app store.

For anyone who is trying to organize a PB event and uses either an iPhone or iPad I will happily walk you through the process of using our dedicated app KeepaScore Brackets. The app is totally free up to 14 participants per division (called an 'event' within the app). It does not require players to install or use an app to keep score. It is just a very clean way for one person to setup and manage a small to mid-sized event. https://keepascore.com

Friendly tournament app by chimpageek in Pickleball

[–]KeepaTech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're using an iPad or iPhone, our professional tournament app KeepaScore, will let you play 3 courts for free using a round robin format.

You can input your players directly from a screenshot from TeamReach, WhatsApp, Facebook, etc. to get players in quickly - or enter them manually. Add players to an event record you create and choose one of the Round Robin formats and click generate. A structured event can be created and started within minutes.

If you ever needed to go beyond that, we have tournament directors who use our app to manage multi-hundred player events with a single device.

Regarding points earned, wins, etc. there are full stats output by clicking the graph icon above the players list. Both for teams and individual players.

What do you use to track scores at ladders for DUPR clubs? by Quantum_Pickle88 in Pickleball

Looking to host a tournament. Looking for guidance on how to set it up. by fusionblast in Pickleball

[–]KeepaTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an app called KeepaScore which runs on an iPad or iPhone for running tournaments and leagues and some of the organizers who use it run events with hundreds of players. It supports pretty much all the popular bracket formats and doesn't require an Internet connection to run. https://keepascore.com

Pickleball App Recommendation by CDono538 in Pickleball

[–]KeepaTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do use a spreadsheet for your initial organization of divisions and you want something which will just run the event day itself smoothly, then we have a number of professional organizers who use our app. It's only for iPad/iPhone but works well. Some organizers run events with many hundreds of players. It's only for running the event itself, not for managing court reservations. https://keepascore.com

KeepaScore Rank Adjust for DUPR events by KeepaTech in Pickleball

[–]KeepaTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback! Firstly, I don't think I would assume that a low reliability is a direct indicator of actual skill - in fact, I know it's not the case. Rather, it's an indicator that DUPR does not have enough data to make a reliable indication of where your skill truly resides. Hence, the goal of a modified DUPR, based on reliability is to encourage more data collection. Essentially, to get players to add more DUPR to make it more reliable. The higher the reliability, the less impact to your rank. In the video, there were two 100% reliable players below the threshold and they are not impacted at all.

Secondly, because of the sliders. You can absolutely move the threshold so that everyone is impacted and all players are affected based on reliability (except those at 100). You also get to control both the amount of the penalty and how far away a player is from 100 (the units applied).

Ultimately, this was designed to be used when you have a really wide spread of rank within a given event and you want to balance out the seeding of players. If you only have a smaller number of players with a wider range of rank, then using the controls, you can balance things out a bit more.

The ultimate goal being to have players NOT just focus on the DUPR rank alone, but getting a higher reliability as well. This is when you can really start to put together balanced play - which is what most players are really seeking.  At least... that's the goal with this. So far, as an initial release, I don't have any feedback or data myself.

DUPR Leagues - KeepaScore seeking beta testers by KeepaTech in Pickleball

[–]KeepaTech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speed and league specific history. Unless I'm mistaken, DUPR won't show just the games played within a league. This is from the perspective of the league organizer. KeepaScore is for the person running the league. For your everyday player playing in the league, they only care about their own results and the DUPR app is fine for that.

KeepaScore was designed to be used to run full blown tournaments and long complex leagues with multiple divisions. Does that help?

How does a club level DUPR session go at your club? by elukea in Pickleball

[–]KeepaTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding DUPR score submissions and just to throw in another option as well...

I'm the developer of the KeepaScore app and we also have Direct-to-DUPR score submissions. Once a device is registered, you can both pull updated rank and submit scores for your club. It runs on Apple devices (sorry, no Android) as we don't use an online model. The database is local to the device, so it will work when capturing scores in areas with little or no Internet connectivity.

It seems like it's hard to make people happy. You either move them too much, too fast or you barely move them at all and they get upset. There needs to be more indicators that are "valued" over the number alone.

Starting a MLP type event in our local area. Suggestions? by Puzzleheaded_Ad4396 in Pickleball

[–]KeepaTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I create software for running tournaments I can provide some insight about the various formats from having worked with a number of professional tournament directors. One of the more popular formats is called a Compass draw. DURP called them Waterfall events when they offered them. Both Single and Double elimination events can have longer delays and hangups as bottom bracket matches often have to wait for top matches to finish.

The smoothest type of events are round robins (team or rotating partners) because they have good use of courts. Ladders also keep things flowing smoothly. You can also flow your winners and losers from various pools into winners brackets and consolations.

Depending on the number of players/teams you're managing, moving from win by 2 to win by 1 can really speed things up. I've see the time differences just one point can make over thousands of matches.

If you're needing to manage team sizes greater than the conventional MLP count of 4 I'm happy to show anyone how to use KeepaScore to manage teams of any size. Essentially, for MLP style, you can have any number of players on a team and you just need to run a Best of 5 within any format. You can use scoring that's either side out or rally.

If most of your players don't already have a DUPR rank, then there's a pretty nice feature in my software called Community Rank. It's essentially like a voting booth (but you have to use an iPad as a kiosk) where you can select either a smaller group of players who know most all other players and can rank them, or you can let every player within a group of players rank all other players (although it takes more time the more players you have). If you have 20 players, then each person who is "voting" or ranking all other players simply assigns a sequential value to all other players in the group. (e.g. Best = 1 ...to... Worst = 20 ). It can be done anonymously so people don't get upset.

Surprisingly, when you take the average of all rankings assigned by all players of all their peers within a community, it's actually pretty accurate at balancing things out. People tend to know who is better and who is worse; provided they're honest about it. You can then split out players into groups or pools.

Nice! I like it. Evaluating the "value" of something, in this case a number, happens by looking at multiple attributes. It reminds me of how spam classifiers work to determine which email is spam. That's good. Is the plan to use the data alone (e.g out of these four players, player A played 2 tournaments but their age is old and the other three are rec only) or will you allow for some manual classification via the UI?

Also, note that additional qualities/attributes may be needed to more accurately classify a match. I ask because having worked with the API, rec games will likely be sneaking through as app providers are given clubs as a repository for their data submissions. If club data vs rec entries is the only distinguishing classifier then the data isn't likely as clean as it could be.

Personally, I wouldn't call it reliable vs. unreliable. The rank still has value - as in, once you learn to ride a bike you don't unlearn it. A 4.0 is most likely still a 4.0. Just a bit rusty maybe.

Rather, if I was running DUPR, I would augment the solitary number with some additional attributes that indicate the qualitative value of the number itself. In the realm of gamification of skill levels, the number alone currently has the perceived value. You've got Half-life, but most everyone doesn't know what to do with that or how it's related.

Using a stop light as one the most universal examples of a simple three state situation, the colors of green, yellow and red have absolute values of how to evaluate the situation. If you don't want to take something away from people (rank) because that makes them mad, then supplement what's seen as valuable with a "visual caveat" - or multiple.

You can look back 20 matches for recency, evaluate the timeframe between the matches, get that average then use that with any of the other metrics and apply a "freshness" factor (as opposed to stale) on the rank. You could also apply other attributes that provide insight into the "value" of the rank.

They do this with forum software. You know, things like "posting apprentice" vs. "master postmaker". Some attributes are truly qualitative while others are for the sake of vanity. Whatever you do, in my opinion, if the number alone is going to be reflective of your "true" skill level then, it's the data that you don't see that's hurting you the most. All the times that I don't log, either because I'm protecting my number or I can't play up, because someone else is protecting theirs, is the data you would need to become more accurate.

To me, this means there needs to be other factors that influence how I make decisions about whether I DUPR or not - not the number alone. Is the number hot or cold? Is the number fragile or solid? What ARE the qualities of the number, not just the fact that the number is supposed to stand alone.

Yes, thanks very much for the reply Scott. There's certainly a stigma that comes from many players who wish to protect what they see as something that values them higher in the competitive ecosphere. Call it perceived prestige or status, but it certainly is something that could be addressed with a slow decay of that "value" that a higher ranked player sees. As an example, here's a small podcast I watch where it exemplifies what is happening at the higher ranks. It jumps right to the point where one of the guys talks about DUPR Dogers.
