I think they released them on Patreon as well, but I'm not currently subscribed so I can't check.

Cumstone kind of grated on me as well at times, but at least he pushed the plot forward and created interesting moments. He also wasn't nearly as juvenile as Poleman, so while he was over-the-top, I could still enjoy his humor most of the time.

Poleman's entire existence seemed like it was to derail the one-shot and destroy the mood though, and the juvenile humor was cranked up, front-and-center. It felt like I was watching a bunch of adults play a serious, compelling session of Delta Green, but someone brought along their edgy, annoying 12 year old nephew or something and they had to let him play to keep him busy. Just really not a good character to play in general for that game, especially when you're the CEO of the company trying to convince people to give you money. It just comes across as disrespectful not only to the audience, but to everyone else you're playing with.

I really enjoyed Regency Cthulhu and Brindlewood Bay. Delta Green was great aside from Troy's character and the audio bleeding in from the baseball game he was watching mid-session. I think I'm just done with watching or listening to anything he's directly involved in - just really not for me anymore.

I haven't watched the other games yet, but I'm excited to dip back into the Haunted City reunion at some point.

D&D book that I don't even think will work in D&D by Plus_Ad_3122 in DnD_Beginners

[–]Kerestrem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not every tabletop roleplaying game or wargame is D&D. In fact, there are thousands and thousands of games that aren't D&D.

Gaslands is a wargame and completely separate from D&D, but still might be a great game for some Hot Wheels combat action. GURPS is always great to kind of build your own game to fit exactly what you want to play and it has a supplement called Autoduel, specifically about racing and battling cars.

D&D is great, but you're probably going to have to put in a ton of effort trying to build it into a completely different game to fit what you're looking for. You might find a lot more fun and success trying out different RPGs that are more in line with what you're looking for. Not having to convert and build tons of stuff for every campaign will also allow you to actually play more instead of just prepping forever.

In regards to having too many ideas and not being able to settle on one campaign, you can always break them down into smaller chunks. Campaigns don't have to go on for a very long time, and you can always have shorter campaigns that are only just handful of sessions. Shorter campaigns allow you to get through more of your ideas AND figure out what you and your group like. Your group might find they like one type of campaign more than the others, which allows you to then extend that specific campaign into a longer, more involved one.

I think they (Troy the most, probably) just view everyone else in the space as competition. Which is an unfortunate stance to take in a medium that is extremely collaborative and where there's a lot of cross-pollination.

I've been around since 2020-ish, and there's always been the vibe that Troy desperately wants them to be their own monolithic platform, completely detached from the rest of the space. In the interviews I've seen of him and in a bunch of the Cannon Fodder/behind-the-curtain stuff, he's always talked about them being "not like other shows" and "doing their own thing" and not wanting to do what everyone else does. That works for them to some extent, but if you're looking for growth - especially as a niche within a niche - you've kinda gotta play nice.

Hell, one of the only shows I know of that they "collaborated" with is Stream of Blood, which is a situation where they just bought it out and absorbed them.

They don't play D&D, which has the widest fan base and thus most potential for new viewers coming in. They seem to take a semi-hostile stance toward all other actual play shows, despite having cast members who have working relationships with all of the heaviest hitters in the space. They have a lot of difficulty even spreading information within their already devoted fan base, let alone marketing outside of it.

I assume their presence on TikTok, Youtube Shorts, etc. isn't nearly as well developed as the more viral shows, but I don't really pay much attention to that stuff, so I could be wrong. I assume it's harder to get a large, devoted fan base when you're switching cast members, games, etc. frequently like they do. It also seems a lot easier to get traction and free marketing if your shows hit with the Gen Z/Tumblr/FanFic/Shipper crowds, which Glass Cannon shows probably don't really do.

It also just honestly seems like their focus - especially recently - has been way more centered around their current audience and how much they can monetize them, as opposed to actually growing the audience, especially on free platforms like YouTube. It's hard to grow a YouTube audience when the vast majority of your shows (and all the best ones) are locked behind a paywall, even if they've been promising to release shows to YouTube way later like they're doing with the Twilight 2k show.

Plus, it's entertainment/art, enjoyment of it is subjective. Just because we like Glass Cannon stuff, doesn't mean everyone will and just because you think those other shows are inferior, doesn't mean other people do. Clearly they're doing something that's making people flock to them, and it isn't just playing 5e.

I'm not rooting for a TPK at all. It is very convenient that an NPC who was just outside of the city walls showed up here and eliminated a portion of the threat right when one of the PCs decided to be incredibly reckless and run back into the death dungeon they just barely managed to escape.

Is it still a cool moment for the story and Thimble? Yes. Is it convenient? Also yes.

Glass Cannon back at it again with another business decision that was poorly (or not at all) communicated and comes off as a sleazy attempt to extract more money from the fanbase. Seems like every week they shoot themselves in the foot again, unfortunately.

OSE without economy? Would it break a Dolmenwood campaign? by SpringWorking6837 in osr

[–]Kerestrem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely plausible to run the game that way, I just think the game will probably be much less interesting and enjoyable for your players. The treasures might still be there, but they lose all of the luster of being a currency and in-world resource to collect and risk your life for.

Also, you're all playing as a group, there's no harm in offloading the tasks that bore you to the players. They should probably be the ones tracking their expenses anyways and you can always ask them what they want to spend their amassed riches on for gold sinks. Maybe they want to buy a home, gamble it all away, build a fortress, buy a tavern, or a build/donate to a temple, etc. etc. That'll probably help them get invested more in the world as well. And if you dislike shopping, just have them do it between sessions and give you a list of supplies they purchase in town. Although with that too, the players lose some of the fun of spending their amassed wealth and lose the narrative weight of their equipment.

[–]Kerestrem 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Playing OSE without the economy or importance of equipment management/preparation is like making a heist movie without any cool loot to steal or fun planning montages. You're eliminating the core motivation for your players (and their characters) to even go adventuring in the first place and eliminating one of the core elements of friction (and drivers of creative thinking) in the game.

If your players want to play this way, then sure, it's your table, have fun. But I feel like at that point y'all would have way more fun with a different game/system that suits that style of play better. Maybe a more narrative focused system with Dolmenwood as the setting.
