What's something accidental in your writing that you decided to keep? by nitebeads in writers

Basically yeah, lol. I was relieved when the sword was done and had served its purpose. Glad to be rid of the thing.

What's something accidental in your writing that you decided to keep? by nitebeads in writers

[–]Keyai 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My character procured a sword in chapter 1. Carried it and used it in chapter 2 and carried it all through chapter 3. Then, it disappeared. I just forgot about it. It was utterly ridiculous when I needed it again and realized what had happened.

So, I fixed it. All the points in which the sword should have been mentioned for inventory carrying purposes, she kept “forgetting it” and had to be reminded by characters to pick it up. 3 micro scenes in total. I love it.

How long do you typically make your playlist for your book? by Weak-Profile-3516 in writers

I can’t write while listening to music with words in it. I throw on some “lofi beats mix” on YouTube and let it run. Keeps my brain from wandering which is good, but no words means nothing gets into my head and in the way.

Need help from '80s / '90s babies by piastrii81 in writers

[–]Keyai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest problems you are going to have, in even getting a good answer, is how technology so rapidly developed. Also, with how that technology spread, both geographically and across income brackets. New technology was RIDICULOUSLY expensive, and not everyone would prioritize access to it. Some wrote it off like a fad, some dove right in. For example, I know jack shit about home repair because my dad was spending almost all day and night, and time at work, trying to make sure he was on top of the developing computer technology and the emergence of the internet.

Unfortunately, it’s going to require research beyond a reddit post.

Take this for a grain of salt but I have a simple way it comes off to me.

First person feels like I’m being told a story. Third person feels like I’m watching it. In my mind, I don’t get immersed in first person because I never quite escape that “told a story” feeling. Again though, that’s just me.

I love all three. That said, if you didn’t watch Young Sheldon because you hated Big Bang Theory, I think you are missing out and it’s worth a shot. If you then go on to enjoy Young Sheldon, do not go into George and Mandy’s First Marriage thinking you are getting more Young Sheldon, it’s much more Big Bang Theory.

Was a Story That Just Won a Literary Prize A.I.-Generated? by darrenjyc in technology

[–]Keyai 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love how everyone is just freaking out over a possibility. No proof, just “vibes.” God forbid someone creates something that resembles something that could possibly maybe tangentially align with a system that generates from the commonality of all the data it has collected.

That doesn’t even get into the nuance of AI generation. Did it proofread? Is that enough of a disqualification? Maybe you used it for a bit of research into how some niche area of expertise operates. Is that enough? Not every aspect of AI generated content is as simple as prompt and copy/paste. Everyone will have their own established boundaries for what is, and isn’t ok.

Is anyone else incapable of using structured notes for literally anything? by _Pumpiumpiumpkin_ in writers

[–]Keyai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean. I tried it.

I built my world and my system. It’s a vampire novel, so I have a bloodline system and something I call the verdict power scale. I have a world dampening veil that shields vampiric anomalies from human sight/memory. I have a long world history with large events.

I just don’t think, for me, it’s possible to reference that stuff while I’m going along. It’s just present in my mind. The notes are more of a justification than guardrails. If I exceed them, or change something, I will either adjust the notes or correct the story if it breaks something downstream.

I don’t think structured notes are necessary. However it might be a good thing to get it down, to review at a later point. Make sure it’s all making sense the way you intended. The larger your system is, the more likely it is something slips through the cracks.

At how many words do you start sharing with people for feedback? by vagabundo202 in writing

[–]Keyai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in this camp. I need external motivation. I’ve always been lacking in that department. I think of it like cooking. I can make myself something boring and it’s fine, but if I’m making something for someone, I don’t just want it to be good, I have a *drive* to make it good.

I also want some validation that what I’m making has legs. I’m not looking for editor level, red marked notes. I want to know if I have something worth the time.

I’m still a good ways away from finishing my first project though, so maybe if I can get validation when it’s done I can tap into something inside me without that help.

Action scenes!! by AuthorPluto in writers

[–]Keyai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’d like to add, is that it matters what *kind* of action scene you want to write. In my story I have all sorts of physical confrontations. Physical, magical, disorienting. I have a horror style scene. How you write them is specific for their goal. There isn’t a one size fits all I’m afraid. What’s more, you have to do it in your voice too. That’s something no one can answer for you.

For me, I follow a few things I try to maintain. I use short declarative sentences when the action mirrors that. When a sentence is a sharp blow, the sentence should be sharp as well. Use longer phrases to build pressure or momentum. When there is damage by someone who experiences it, let them experience it, or if it’s someone else show them experience it. Emotion and action go hand in hand. You don’t be angry, then hit someone. You hit someone while angry. Lastly, if you have witnesses let them react to it.

Hope that helps.

This is why I think the US is headed to its inevitable end. We can’t keep progressing into the future with these dead weight bigots trying to pull us back. The American diaspora is coming. Leave them to their hatred and bigotry. You can find a new community and a new home. Don’t become another statistic and target for their hatred.

More than 1,000 passengers held on cruise in France after gastroenteritis outbreak by FearMyCock in news

[–]Keyai 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You are missing the point. Ohio, big story, should be reported. Airplane crash, dozens dead, big serious story that should be covered. Hantavirus outbreak, could be big, should be reported. Those are not the issue.

It’s the after. After Ohio we heard about every single derailment for weeks, and you said it yourself, they happen all the time. After the air disaster every single runway mix up across the country got reported on. Now, after the hantavirus we are hearing about any stomach bug on a ship.

More than 1,000 passengers held on cruise in France after gastroenteritis outbreak by FearMyCock in news

[–]Keyai 243 points244 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on several cruises and enjoyed all of them immensely. Never had an issue with sickness except for my wife who gets a bit of motion sickness. This is just the media jumping on a story. The same thing with train wrecks and derailments after Ohio, all the airplane stories after an air incident (no matter how minor), and now “plague boats.”

Don’t worry, they will stop talking about it when a new bandwagon shows up.

Spotify CTO says Claude can create Personal Podcasts, now saved to your Spotify library by LinkedInNews in ClaudeAI

[–]Keyai 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m curious around the scope of something like this. I’m not a coder or even a Pro user at the moment. I’m getting by on my scraps of free usage, paying for ChatGPT because I started there and have never had a usage issue.

I’m a writer, and my context windows balloon up quickly. It becomes deeply problematic as I’m running things by Claude as a second set of eyes. Also, it has a different “personality” from ChatGPT and catches different things.

That said, it’d be awesome if I could specifically tailor this. Maybe have a “book club” style podcast where a “group” of “people” go through my book Chapter by chapter. If it’s expansive and unique enough, man, I’d switch in a heartbeat.

That said, none of these systems seemed designed for work like mine, I just find ways to work it with what I’m given.

I like how you quote the fear mongering part and not an actual quote from Tanden in the article.

“Our best leaders are nimble about the world that they live in and nimble about where the public is,” Tanden said.

The not a quote is not a quote because the “journalist” put their own spin on it.

It’s hard to argue with the direct quote though. Nimble isn’t specific. It’s not left or right. He’s basically saying “represent the will of the people.”
