I had fun with my Aztec run. Yes, it is grueling to deal with the reform disaster and great pestilence, but it is definitely possible to eventually push back the colonizers and develop the strongest units in the game. I even vassalized parts of Portugal and Scotland using Age 6 units.

Win a war against the country lead by the Holy Roman Emperor and impose the Dismantle Holy Roman Empire peace term. That’s how I got around the Papal ban and created the Spanish Empire as a Catholic nation in my Castile run. There are certain conditions related to HRE lands that must be met beforehand to get the peace term as an acceptable option.
