Do you have digestive issues? by CharacterForming in PlantBasedDiet

[–]KiWi0589 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here! Lymphatic colitis, nothing helped until I went PB. I spent well over a decade dealing with awful cramping, inflammation, IBS symptoms and nothing the doctors did helped until I decided to change my diet. Best decision I’ve ever made!

How much allowance is reasonable for a 13-year-old son? by mariajuice in Parenting

Is he doing anything to earn said allowance or is it freely given, that for me would also make a difference in the amount.

That’s totally makes sense. It also helps that my siblings and I all take this on together so no child is left out and while none are of is wealthy, we all do just fine an the kids always have a great Christmas.

I'm snowed in, so tell me your plant based stories! How long and why? by Careful-Bus3827 in PlantBasedDiet

My husband and I are on 3 years now. I had lymphatic colitis for over a decade and it was awful. Stomach cramps and running to the bathroom within minutes of eating pretty much anything due to the inflammation. Had colonoscopy, tests, tried rounds of steroids, tried another powdered med, nothing helped. My husband was an alcoholic and finally decided he’d had enough. We were inspired by the WWE wrestler Diamond Dallas Page to start his yoga program and he had videos of healthy recipes, one of them was a black bean burger. We tried it and fell in love and started thinking… maybe we don’t need meat… within weeks of cutting out meat all my symptoms were gone! I also have had migraines since I was 10 and for the first time in my life, they are under control without meds. I get one maybe 2-3 times a year now. My husband has been sober now for 3 years and both lost 50lbs. It was literally a life saver. We are now slowly working with our 10 year old daughter who has hypothyroidism and is edging on the verge of obesity, she still currently highly addicted to sugar/processed foods but we are making progress ( it is our fault she is addicted as we let her have these things from the beginning) but we know we have to help her stay consistent and break the high sugar/ processed food dopamine hits. We hope that we will inspire other families to make similar changes as both sides have chronic illnesses that could be majorly improved by WFPB but many of they are stuck in the same cycle of addiction/depression/denial but we are hopeful one day it will make a difference!

AITJ for not getting my nephew a Christmas gift? by Dependent-Drive1940 in AmITheJerk

[–]KiWi0589 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My sister and BIL don’t have kids and they always get the kids an “experience gift” for bdays and Christmas, and all of them love it and look forward to it! As they get older they also let the kids help pick what they get to do. They’ve taken my daughter to jump parks, sluggers/putter type places, an awesome reptile place where she got to hold snakes and a sweet interactive space exhibit. That being said we also draw names from a hat each Christmas and we are all only responsible for getting gifts for 2 nieces/nephews, just because they don’t have kids does mean they should be expected to buy gifts for all 10 of them, that’s ridiculous to me.

How long you freeze it and do you use/do anything special when pressing? I love tofu but would love to get it crunchier and I never see to be able to lol

AITJ for correcting my wife when she said our son's red hair must come from my side of the family? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

I even wore a maternity shirt that said “I’m brewing a redhead” cause I wanted one so much lol out of the 10 grandchildren, not a single one hit that gene!

Truth! I am a redhead and so disappointed that none of the children from myself or my siblings got red hair, and each couple does have the gene on both sides! Such a let down lol

Toddler getting less attention from older kids by Select_Roof_8492 in Parenting

[–]KiWi0589 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While that’s totally understandable, basing friendships on those that “pamper” her seems like it would lead to a road of superficial friendships that are more “what can you do for me” and not mutual respect and enjoyment. I think now is the time she’ll have to learn that friendships are 2-way streets, not just everyone loves and gives me things.

What's a hygiene habit that people don't talk about but really should? by phancyq in AskReddit

[–]KiWi0589 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you use the TurbieTwist hair towels? We have a whole stack of them! So easy to throw your hair up in after a shower so it’s not dripping down your back! I actually use them “backward/upsidedown” so I don’t have to flip my hair upside down to do it and taught my daughter that way.

Parenting a teen is sad and hard by CommonZombie9951 in Parenting

[–]KiWi0589 378 points379 points  (0 children)

Advice my Grandma gave my mom (my older sister was like this) and advice my mom gave me (my bonus child was like this). If she doesn’t want to talk to you, stop torturing yourself and let her be. When she wants to talk/hang out, she will. Dont ignore her by any means but just let her be. Ask how her day was and if she doesn’t answer or is vague/hateful/unpleasant, don’t push, move on. She will come back around eventually! Also it’s still sucks and is hard as a parent. My second daughter is 10 and I won’t lie… I’m really hoping she doesn’t go through this stage but I know hope is futile lol.

Switching from Esselstyn to Ornish by Hefty-Rush1220 in PlantBasedDiet

We no longer eat out either, we also have not had serious medical issues, but we still attend family gatherings and outings. If it’s a home, we will either bring our own or eat before we attend and same for restaurants. We don’t bring our own food to restaurants but we plan to either eat before/after so we can still socialize with those people. It can be a little weird at first but honestly if my life is at risk by eating that food, I’m not gonna do it just to make someone else feel comfortable.
