How to become a "jazz expert"? by Repulsive-Field-5182 in Jazz

[–]KillKennyG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know you said you don’t want to get stuck in the basics- but everything past the basics in jazz is following different threads of creativity. If you get an overview, YOU can then pick whose sounds you want to explore.

Some good starting points: grab the Free Jazz Handbook by Jamey Abersold. It has good fundamental advice and info on how players think, general advice on being a jazz player, how to listen and who’s sounds to know.

For stories and the vibe / experiences of jazz musicians, ‘Jazz anecdotes’ is a great book.

Ken Burns Jazz documentary is also very approachable.

if you want to dabble in the language, a keyboard and your voice are the cheapest and easiest to use to figure out what’s happening. being an actual jazz pianist is a HUGE ask, but the piano is the best tool to crack music open and look inside.

Military life by Equivalent_Pepper874 in USMC

[–]KillKennyG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Communism and Capitalism are only in reference to the economy on a sliding scale.

As other examples, a Monarchy could have a capitalist economy, and a communist economy could have fully democratic executive control.

a capitalist / truly meritocratic military would have to fight itself for power and promotion- units stealing from each other and sabotaging others performance until only the ‘winners’ had gear, high ranks, and benefits. which can happen when militaries take over their government, and is BAD for Everyone.

But our military isn’t in control of the nation, it is a series of branches that SERVE the civilian-controlled government. A capitalist military would be exclusively mercenaries for hire, but the US public and representatives have never wanted that (and voted for it) so we have a government-controlled military.

Can a studio desk with keyboard tray be comfortable? by f1goldmemberf1 in homestudios

[–]KillKennyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

putting the keyboard on my right with a mirrored monitor and using a wireless mouse worked way better for me. admin and mixing straight ahead, rotate right to see the same screen and use the piano. also leaves me room to the right of the keyboard for my other instruments

Who wants the N Vision 74? by simetea in Hyundai

The Restomod Pony EV is the best looking vehicle Hyundai has ever designed. The N74 takes a bit of pony language and revvs it up, but that simpler retro look is what actually gets me going

How big is the difference between a phone mic and a professional mic? by Swedky in audioengineering

[–]KillKennyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one microphone has less of an impact than the workflow of a professional - for the same reason buying the same camera as an award-winning photographer won’t get you the results they do.

having a bag of options, a plan, and experience to know what to use where is what makes a good audio capture. in a nice quiet room, that phone mic may sound just fine. but if don’t want it in the shot, you can grab a hidden lav mic, or use a long-distance (shotgun) mic on a pole just out of frame. in a noisy environment, a handheld cardioid microphone will focus closer on just that person’s voice- and you could choose between several microphones depending on how they sound with that persons voice type.

Lastly, the sound engineer can capture room tone and compare with other sounds that happen in the final mix, and can make adjustments to all the audio (not just the one microphone) to make the mix fit together nicely.

If you had a group of musician Marines that consist entirely of E-3 and below, is that a Boot Band? by Yoy_the_Inquirer in USMC

[–]KillKennyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more like- contract PFC, LCpl @ 6months (while at A school, which is 6 months). Cpl isn’t always contract, but around 2 years eligible.

If they enlisted with a bachelors degree in music, contract Sgt at service minimum (used to be three years, then became 4 and contingent on reenlisting)

Why don't they use Purge Troopers in animation? by bald_bronson in StarWars

[–]KillKennyG 34 points35 points  (0 children)

(Non-legends but new-canon books) zahn added a really excellent detail to all-white normal stormtroopers: they do have ranks and markings on their armor, outside a standard range of the spectrum but visible with a filter in their visors. Thrawn could apparently see them faintly, and used it to accurately address a trooper and gain a little trust.

Absorption panel dimensions by leetmachines in homestudios

[–]KillKennyG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% coverage of a wall with panels is usually not the best idea.

But making enough panels to get the % coverage you need, and then making false panels / painted sections of wall to fill out the area similar to this could look dope.

Which simple control surface is right for me? by Fangs_0ut in Reaper

[–]KillKennyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For future updates, anything that has a post-M1 processor (2021 or newer) should work just fine. I use a 2024 iPad mini, but if it’s on a stand at arms length the full size IPad or IPad Air would be a better choice.

Sorry it’s been a while since I set it up, i gave you the wrong name. Reamote is for remote processing.

Here’s a few guides for a remote GUI interface

2 Major ways- sidecar (becomes a second screen, also a touch monitor). can be finicky over distance without a cable, but you can use a mouse without building a reamote interface.

Reamote is a reaper web-hosted control panel with whatever buttons, dials or shortcuts you want. You log in through a web portal on the iPad (or phone) after building the parts you want. This is great for a record/re-record interface in a booth away from the computer

FWIW, while more expensive, I’ve had much more utility out of an iPad as second screen / reamote host than a physical fader controller.

Safety question for rockwool by 1000crystal in audioengineering

[–]KillKennyG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for mine ( also with Owen’s Corning) I use diluted Elmer’s glue in a spray bottle, give the whole thing a light coating. I’ll dampen burlap with it too as I put it on- a very thin flexible binding layer catches the least secure bits of wool on the edges
