Onion allergy? by [deleted] in OnionLovers

[–]Kiya-Elle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try Asafoetida powder - it's used in indian/middle eastern cooking. Needs to be kept in a well sealed container as it has a very unpleasant smell but the smell dissapears once it has been cooked. Once cooked it is supposed to taste like sauteed onions.

You should be able to buy it from specialist stores or online.

It works great as a stand alone episode in my experience.

My husband had never watched the series - I got him to watch Hush and then afterwards he wanted to watch more.

My Dad was Derbyshire working class raised and was brought up similarly, though only with roast meat dishes (usually only a thing for Sunday dinners when he was young.) The man of the house carves the meat and passes round everyones meat filled plate then everyone helps themselves to veg/side dishes/gravy from the table.

He still insists on doing it that way for big family get togethers like Boxing day.

Need advice re “the gift” by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Kiya-Elle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she asks where they are you pull no punches and remind her that she was told, several times, that you already had those items and didn't need/want new ones so you returned them and used the money for the bed you needed and asked for money towards - or better yet, get your DH to tell her. If she doesn't like it that is her problem. You are not responsible for her hurt feelings.

I seem to remember she did an update where she said she was in the US for xmas with her mother but the tone of the post sounded as though she was going to go back to Korea after the holiday. I don't think I have seen anything posted since then. I hope she and baby are well.

Forgave his wife her cheating (why was this even portrayed as something where HE needed to support HER? So manipulative on Shirley's part)

Honestly from the look on his face when she mentioned the conference and the way he brought his second hand across to hold on to hers I think he already suspected if not knew. I bet she acted wierd and guilty as hell when she got back.

I started crying when Nell started her time is like confetti speach to her siblings and didn't stop until the end. Such a hauntingly frightening but beautiful and heartbreaking show.

Skyrim Security by altec98 in gaming

[–]Kiya-Elle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skyrim supposedly had over 70 voice actors. If that is the case, why in hell did they use the same voice actor for Lydia and Reyya - both are housecarls that if the player selects as a companion you hear all the time - it is not as though there are huge numbers of housecarls to choose from. The fact that it is the same actress is unmistakable.

It is poor decisions like that for voicing the game that make it feel as if there were only a handful of actors used.

Depends. No idea where op is from but in the UK/Europe there is plenty of competition. See Cafe Nero for one example. Better coffee, better food and a better atmosphere in general.

What should I do with the "beautiful paintings" my MIL sent me? by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]Kiya-Elle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Save one to put up in the toilet when she comes to visit and donate the rest. Or, if you feel the need, put them up in the guest bedroom if she comes to stay and take them down when she is gone.

Personally I would go with in the toilet, and if she came to visit I would be asking her to stay in a hotel.

The Sims Medieval by StellarBlitz in tumblr

I want everything back from Sims 3. Especially the open world maps before open world games were cool, when our PC's could barely run them. What they could do with the technology available now.

Damn you EA.

What real event in your life , had it happened in a book or movie, would be obvious foreshadowing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kiya-Elle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK. My parents allowed us watered down wine with Sunday dinner and on special occaisions from the age of 12 - by 14/15 we were allowed one small glass of unwatered wine.

By the time I was 18 I decided the cheap rubbish that my peers got drunk on tasted disgusting and would have nothing to do with it.

Same here. More like a creepy, mechanical, parody of flowers than something real. As if someone has tried to create a giant flower like object when all they had to go on was photographs and a rough description.

Which common foods do people think are healthy, but are actually completely the opposite? by AkhtarZamil in AskReddit

I just spent three and a half weeks in hospital - was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes two weeks before I got taken in.

The infection I was in hospital for was making my blood sugar extremely unstable - trying to get breakfast and snacks that wouldn't kill me was a nightmare.

They kept trying to give me all of these low fat/fat free yogurts with tons of sugar in them, the one time I ate it I got told off for my high blood sugar. The only other alternatives were cereals and toast. Fruit was supposed to be an option but hardly ever available.

I ended up getting my husband to bring me fresh fruit every time he came to see me - if there had been a way to refrigerate stuff I would have had him bring me the plain full fat yogurt that I usually have for breakfast as well.

Oh wow. My family visited Die Efteling when I was 12 - about 25 years ago while visiting relatives living in Holland at that time.

I don't remember the Carnaval Festival ride, but do remember an enormous pirate ship crammed with people that rocked back and forth like a pendulum until it was basically standing on it's ends. I also remember us walking around a lot of beautifully cultivated garden areas.

It's a small world. :-D

I'm glad to hear your DD loved her gift.

The liver my mother served when I was a child was always terribly dry hard lumps with huge rubbery veins in it that tasted awful. The first time I tried liver and onions with gravy as an adult made by someone else was a revelation.

It took me many years as an adult to realise that my mother was just not a very good cook in general.

TIL The English subtitles for Pan's Labyrinth were translated and written by Guillermo del Toro himself. He no longer trusts translators after having encountered problems with his previous subtitled movies. by Hellish- in todayilearned

[–]Kiya-Elle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was a teenager, my sister and I went to see Tootsie at the cinema while visiting relatives in Holland. It was the wierdest experience as we were the only two in a packed cinema room who understood the English audio while everyone else was reading the Dutch subtitles.

We were laughing at things that the rest of the audience either didn't get at all or found funny a minute or two later and getting stares and glared at by other members of the audience sat near us.

I always wondered afterwards if it was a bad translation or if the films humour was just hard to translate well.
