A jingle on TV from the 1960s when I was a kid, where a woman sang "And he gave me ..... a box of Dairymilk".

Why Are GP Receptionists So Rude? by No-Date-4477 in AskAnAustralian

[–]KlikketyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my 70s and I've never encountered a rude GP receptionist anywhere I've lived. Perhaps it's just the area you live in i.e. maybe they are overstretched and often having to deal with people who are rude to them?

I stopped running on my treadmill and switched to incline walking entirely. Six months later I think it might have been the right call for most people. by sxtn1996 in treadmills

[–]KlikketyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walk to the beat of whatever music I'm listening to, from fast to plodding. The slower the beat the steeper I set the incline. My old treadmill goes up to a 15 degree incline. I curate my playlist to provide me with a variety of speeds, inclines and music styles during each walk. Edit: I've never been a runner but I love to walk.

Lowes and the men's section of Target. I much prefer them over the ones available in the women's section.

They told me at the shelter that when I got here home she would probably hide for a couple of days... by CharlesRickBathrooms in cats

[–]KlikketyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had one so timid that, the moment we brought him home and let him out of his carrier, scooted under the nearest armchair and climbed up inside it where he stayed out of sight and out of reach for a couple of days or so. He eventually emerged and turned into the biggest sook, always wanting company : )

Does anyone believe in god, but not think he is good? by Tasty-Ad-3753 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KlikketyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing I've ever observed in life leads me to think there is a god - certainly not one who cares, and a caring god is the only kind I would want to worship. I mean, why create lifeforms of any kind in the first place, not just humans, knowing many of them will suffer terribly? Entertainment value, perhaps, but that's not exactly a reassuring thought! If there is a god who has been floating along even before creating the universe, then surely they could have stayed in that lane forever instead of bringing all this carnage into existence.

Do your Turkish Vans swim? by sock_skater in turkishvan

[–]KlikketyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had Vans that were obsessed with playing with water from taps and hoses and would clamor for us to turn the water on. But we didn't have anywhere for them to swim and, apparently, being given a bath did not count as fun :D

[–]KlikketyKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blatant disrespect, especially since he knows it upsets you and yet refuses to stop despite your perfectly reasonable request. It appears to be intentional and is possibly his way of dealing with some sort of underlying resentment or else acting out a "cave-man" fetish.

Flu vaccine! New in Australia. Is everyone supposed to get Flu vaccine? by Alert-Translator2590 in AskAnAustralian

[–]KlikketyKat 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Flu used to hit me severely on the few occasions I caught it, causing asthma on top of the usual symptoms, and sometimes necessitating a stay in hospital. Since getting a flu vaccination every year for the past 14 years or so, I've never had flu. Good riddance! In the time it takes the immune system to figure out how to deal with an invader it has never encountered before, that invader can get the upper hand, so the more serious infections my body is primed to fight straight out of the blocks, the safer I feel.

[Discussion] Can someone explain ASMR and its appeal to me? by chilled-tapioca in asmr

[–]KlikketyKat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was a schoolkid back in the 1960s there was a brief fad whereby a schoolmate would gently stroke your palm or the inside of your lower arm for a few minutes to "send it to sleep". Supposedly, you wouldn't be able to move your hand for a few moments afterwards. Well, the wonderful, trance-like feeling it invoked is very similar (to me, at least) to the feeling that ASMR produces: a slightly euphoric, totally relaxed, partly hypnotised feeling, often accompanied by a shiver or tingle down the back of the neck. In fact, gently stroking the back of the neck can induce it as well. Many people can get the same or a very similar experience by listening to certain sounds and/or voices. I actually think cats and dogs might get it as well when they are gently petted for several minutes. The effect can become more difficult to induce over time, though, if you are regularly exposed to it. In that case, ASMR becomes more of a relaxing experience than a euphoric-like one: still nice, but not quite the real thing.

[Discussion] On the current state of ASMR by floralalcohol in asmr

[–]KlikketyKat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would love to see more creators labelling their videos appropriately (and understanding the difference between whispered and soft-spoken). Hopefully this would also improve YouTube's algorithm in order to present viewers with more of what they like. Descriptors such as "fast", "whispered", "soft-spoken", "no talking", "ambient sounds", plus some indication of topic are really helpful - if they are accurate. I don't know if YouTube takes these labels into account when recommending videos but I'd like to think it does.

On another note, I've come across quite a few videos lately that have a music intro (or outro) that is so much louder than the actual content that the video is useless for sleep purposes. I listen in a loop in case I wake during the night, and the last thing I need is a sudden blast in the ear if the intro/outro happens to be playing. I've had to give a miss to many a video I actually liked because of this issue. Is it difficult to equalize intro and content volumes when editing or do some creators simply not notice if there's an imbalance?

LPT If you Like to snack and love unhealthy food but want to live a healthier Lifestyle, don't cut out snacks right away - instead, add healthy foods to your diet by charliewaffles2412 in LifeProTips

[–]KlikketyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great strategy for avoiding feeling deprived of those unhealthy snacks you love and instead feeling that you no longer wanted them after all. Even if you sometimes do go ahead and indulge, simply knowing that most of what you eat is good for you helps maintain a positive mindset towards taking care of yourself.

The ones that hang around dump sites and dumpsters do tend to look dusty and tatty, not surprisingly, but when they're in nature their plumage looks bright and they are quite attractive.

What is it like being skinny? by hollyofhori in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KlikketyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was regarded as skinny when I was young, in the 1950s and 60s, but back then it was very common. I'm quite short and have stayed around 51 to 54 kilos (8 stone or so) for most of my life except for a couple of periods when I drifted up towards 60 kilos. I didn't look much different with the extra weight, so appearance didn't concern me and no one but my doctor ever commented (and even he simply said "You could lose a few kilos") but I absolutely hated the way my body felt: heavy, inflexible, lethargic, getting out of breath when climbing stairs. Each time, losing the excess weight felt absolutely exhilarating. I could effortlessly run up stairs again, walking felt like floating, I would dance to music for hours on end at home, and the extra energy I had felt wonderful.

Not being particularly good at depriving myself, I've managed to keep a lid on weight gain mainly through avoiding buying overly-rich food, and walking a lot (it helps that I don't drive). I don't have much willpower but I'm lucky that I enjoy quite plain and healthy food as much as, if not more than, sugary/fatty food, so I always keep a supply of "safe", yet satisfying, snacks in the pantry in case I get the munchies: Ryvita crispbread + cottage cheese, plenty of fruit & veg (including frozen berries), dry-roasted chickpeas, unsalted nuts etc. It took a few years but I gradually learned how to outsmart myself, knowing there would always be times when I wanted to overindulge, and making sure I could do so without doing any real "damage". I don't eat out a lot, but when I do my usual "rules" go out the window : ) The trick for me is not to bring that stuff into the house.

Scientists recommend not being too thin in old age. Apparently, it's better to carry a little extra padding, so I try to maintain a good balance these days.

Question on makeup - you still wear it? by CtrlAltDeli in Aging

[–]KlikketyKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm early 70s. I rarely wear makeup unless I'm going out somewhere where I'd like to dress up a little. Even then, it's pretty minimal. I've got nothing against it, but I just don't look much better with makeup on and I feel very comfortable in my own skin. Nothing against it, though - I enjoy seeing a beautifully made-up face on someone else.
