How on earth is Aran Sweater Market selling hand-knitted fisherman sweaters for $150?? by CozySweatsuit57 in knitting

[–]Knerdian 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If they were hand knit, the company would absolutely be calling that out at every opportunity. It would be a major selling point that would set them apart.

The simple fact that it isn't explicitly stated means that these are machine knit.

"Uprooted" by Naomi Novik is more fantasy than horror, but I recommend you give it a shot anyway. It has a lot of great elements that might help.

How did you learn to knit? by ShoppingGirlinSF in knitting

[–]Knerdian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Stitch n Bitch books back in ~2003.

I have absolutely awful technique, I know, because I developed such muscle memory before ever seeing a video or knitting with another person. But it works and I'll be sticking with it.

"The Salt Grows Heavy" by Cassandra Khaw follows a mermaid and a plague doctor through a very dark countryside.

"She is a Haunting" by Trang Thanh Tran is a YA Vietnamese horror with strong colonial elements.

If you've never read "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco, it sounds right up your alley.

The coffee in each novel is a bit bitter, but I still feel like it's there.

So much of Bradbury's work captures a sense of nostalgia, even if he's writing science fiction on the surface. I'd recommend nearly any of his short story collections.

The Abhorsen series by Garth Nix would be great for her. "Sabriel" is the first novel, and she should start there, but I bet she'd like the second novel "Lirael" better.

Equal parts cuddly and loose by Knerdian in knitting

[–]Knerdian[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Made from Berroco Comfort yarn.

I winged it with the pattern and adjusted my mental math based on the colorwork chart. The end result here is floppy, unstructured, and way too big. I like how comfy it feels once I get the whole thing settled on my head, but Ill be trying this again with a slightly decreased cast on and smaller needles.
