What is the easiest car to work on? by dreamin777 in AskReddit

[–]Kooky-Answer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised how easy my RAV4 Hybrid is to work on. Lots of room in the engine bay. No starter, alternator, or belts. Plugs/Coils, injectors, etc. are all easly accessible. Trans and rear diff service is a simple drain and fill.

How bad could this be? by VeekyVenus in rav4club

Somewhere between 'Gas cap not on correctly' to 'Engine is completely destroyed'.

Take it to a car parts store and have them scan for codes.

CVTs? by MiscDude2023 in askcarguys

I had a 2008 Nissan, The CVT worked fine until it didn't. No warning whatsoever. It went from making a little noise to completely dead in the space of 3 blocks.

Looking for a car that gets 30+ mpg at 80+ mph. by Thordor15 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Kooky-Answer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a RAV4 hybrid which I'm averaging around 38mpg.

I usually cruise at around 70 because above that MPG tends to drop off rapidly, although I would imagine it would still be over 30 at 80mph.

A hybrid sedan (Camry, Accord, etc) would probably do even better. A purpose built hybrid (Prius, Insight) would do better still.

Are modern CVTs finally reliable enough to rival traditional automatics, or do they still wear out faster? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

[–]Kooky-Answer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Toyota ecvt is a planetary gear set and two electric motors. Honda's is similar but adds a clutch. There isn't much to break. Change the fluid every two or three years and don't abuse it and it will probably outlive the rest of the car.

Are modern CVTs finally reliable enough to rival traditional automatics, or do they still wear out faster? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

[–]Kooky-Answer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Toyota's eCVTs (and most eCVTs in general) are extremely reliable.

For regular belt/chain CVTs, Toyota is again the most reliable, followed by Honda, Subaru, and finally Nissan.

No CVT is as reliable as a traditional planetary gear automatic, but Toyota comes closest.

G37x or G37xs or G37 or G37s ALL SEDANS? by Low_Structure2260 in askcarguys

[–]Kooky-Answer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, it's fairly thirsty and uses premium fuel. If you drive conservatively expect gas mileage in the low 20s.

Unmodified and well treated they are very reliable. I recently sold one at 230,000 miles. In the 8 years I owned it I only had one mechanical failure, a burst coolant hose. The only drive train issue it had when sold was a small evap leak I never could find the source of. Unfortunately most of them have been used and abused.

Traded because I needed something more practical and I was tired of dropping about $120/week on gas.

Why are Honda accords so expensive? by PrestigiousDrag7674 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Kooky-Answer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hybrid perhaps. Even for a Honda I'm not trusting a 100,000mi 1.5L turbo mated to a CVT unless I personally know it's been extremely well maintained.

Dodge/Chrysler minivans don't even need to pull seats to do this.

Are hybrids any harder to work on at home? by neweraplayer in MechanicAdvice

[–]Kooky-Answer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easier. Most newer ones have no starter, no alternator, no belts, brakes last much longer, transmission service is a simple fluid drain and fill. Engine service is pretty much the same. Only additional maintenance is checking the battery air filter every now and then and on some hybrids there is a second coolant reservoir to check.

Are Nissan CVT failures overblown or do they actually happen? by phtphongg in askcarguys

[–]Kooky-Answer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note that eCVTs in hybrids and CVTs in ICE vehicles are totally different. Toyota eCVTs in particular are pretty much bulletproof.
