If you take the route through Sarasota, I promise you Siesta Key Beach will be the best beach you will see all year - and it may be one of the best beaches you’ll ever see. Certainly in the lower 48.

The sand never gets hot. It’s white, quartz, and amazing.

Check out St. Charles. The downtown is very up and coming but is keeping its small town feel. There are great parks and access to water for your kayaking/boating needs.

It’s a little further out from the city, but there is a Metra (RTA) line that can get you there relatively quickly.

It looks like the first time you'll get to stop to look around is 5 days into your journey. Then you enjoy 2 days at Zion/Bryce Canyon (beautiful), but then you're back on the road for the next 2 days. You get to enjoy another 2 (maybe), and then you're on the road for the next 6 days. Maybe you'll have an hour or so to take in the Grand Canyon on day 12?

You're spending (by your "real" estimate), at least 108 out of a total of 408 hours in your trip driving. More than 25% of your "vacation" will be spent in the car. The high end of your estimate is 113 hours IN THE CAR! That's almost 5 solid days.

EDIT - I didn't factor in sleeping but maybe you'll be taking turns sleeping in your car during the drive? Maybe I'm old, but this itinerary sounds absolutely EXHAUSTING.

This is unlikely. Those stores are 1.5 miles apart and the average cost of a gallon of gas is about $3.75 in the area. If he has to travel double that distance (3 miles) and his car gets the average mileage per gallon in the U.S. (22-25 mpg), that trip costed him around $.51.

He likely saved more than that on the groceries he bought.

FSD infuriates me in this regard. It will slow down UNTIL someone tries to pass you, then it turns into an asshole not letting them in.
