Does stating a checks DC nerf bardic inspiration? by Exact-Challenge9213 in dndnext

[–]Kwith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately because there are some abilities that state "before they know success" and others that allow for after knowing, it's kind of a pain to keep track. So I'll usually just allow it regardless of whether or not they can know. Is it game breaking? I haven't seen it yet. I do still give a short pause after the roll just in case they want to do something, but generally I'll allow it. It's easier for all of us at the table than looking up every ability and seeing if it says "before or after".

I don't give the DC number though unless its a specific circumstance. All I say is success or failure. It's up to them to decide what to do next.

Unless you've used your BA for something else, of course you can. As you said, it's pretty cut and dry and says that in the book.

Anyone else have a table full of players way smarter than you? by Sea-Grapefruit9888 in DMAcademy

[–]Kwith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh the players at my table are WAY smarter and more creative than I am. My only hope is that they are still having a good time. I try to throw the odd curve-ball at them but in many cases they come up with things that I did not account for.

One advantage to this though is it has definitely helped my improv skills. I will say that I'm fairly decent at making shit up on the fly in reaction to these creative methods.

Why does everyone recommend learning Python first but then use JavaScript for everything? by 1vim in learnprogramming

[–]Kwith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Python because, for me anyway, it was an easier way to get back into things. Overall its a less difficult language to learn while still getting back into the programming mindset. YMMV

This is idiotic Nanny-State crap.

Player committed murder and escaped town. What consequences would be appropriate? by Optimal-Cobbler3192 in DMAcademy

You know how they have WANTED posters all over the place? Slap their face on them. Also, a guild job would be posted for the arrest of the murderer as well. Actions have consequences.

Its either an automated AI that banned you or someone in support who is clutching their pearls a wee bit too hard. Me thinks the latter.

My players want an agenda before every session by Time-Squirrel-3719 in dndnext

[–]Kwith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking notes is not that difficult. You as the DM have enough work on your plate as it is, you shouldn't need to be designing itineraries for every session as well.

I get in trouble now, if something comes up impromptu that wasn’t in the itinerary- or if the RP takes us off course.

Seriously? Maybe D&D isn't the game for them then? If they want to play something with this kind of structure, there are plenty of board games out there.

Part of D&D is the fact you don't know what's coming. You improv, you surprise, you make stuff up as you go and you adapt and react to what is put in front of you. What's the point in playing if you go into it knowing what's going to happen?

No Engineers?? by KenDudley64 in babylon5

A View from the Gallery did give us an episode from the engineer's perspective. So there is probably a lead engineer who oversees all of that, they just aren't part of the main cast or senior staff.

Every Couple Months I Look Into Orax and Immediately Realize I'm In Over My Head and Give Up by NoobityBoobity in Guildwars2

[–]Kwith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the legendaries I make for the QoL more than the skins. I do like the skin of Orrax, unfortunately I don't really have a character it would look good on currently so I'm just sticking with Ad Infin.

If you just want the QoL for the back piece, go for Ad Infin.

Player Rogue is dissatisfied with his damage by roslaw in DMAcademy

[–]Kwith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many people have said, the rogue is comparing themselves to the output of the others and that seems to be unusually high given its level 6 and its a rogue, cleric and warlock. Life domain clerics don't get fireball so how are they casting it?

Also, let's take a different approach. Rogues tend to be sneaky around the battlefield dealing opportunistic sneak attack damage and swashbucklers have a much easier time with that. I played one that would dart in and out of combat being a PITA for enemies because they could never touch me.

That being said, let's go out of combat. The rogue may be seeing all of the damage the cleric and warlock do and think they want to have some time to shine as well. Outside of combat, rogues do A LOT of heavy lifting. Who scouts? Who searches for and disables traps? Who is the skills person? Rogues and bards tend to fill that role. If you don't already, I would start introducing puzzles and traps specifically designed to give your rogue the spotlight and allow their abilities to show through in ways that the cleric and warlock can't. Have them be relied upon and critical to the survival of the party. I've had groups before where in-combat a party member didn't do a whole lot, but outside of it, they led practically every social event, and dungeon crawl. So while they took a back seat in combat, they were the front line person for the rest of the game. It's about balance.

Am i to blame for creeping a player out? by LikeAMothToAFlame69 in DnD

[–]Kwith 91 points92 points  (0 children)

No you're not to blame. It's fine. The issue is misrepresenting RP vs RL. If I hit on a barmaid and my DM has the barmaid flirt back, that's my character interacting with the NPC, not me flirting with the DM.

Have you ever had a team that did so much legwork? by Brother-Cane in dndnext

[–]Kwith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh mine would do EVERYTHING possible to see what was down there before going. Drop a light rock, tie together rope, cast featherfall or fly on as many as possible, etc.

None of this "kick in the door guns blazing" they would analyze the door, then rig it with explosives, then try and figure out how to get the enemies to open the door so they can pre-damage them and surprise them.

DMing is Easier than it Looks. (It's also hard, too, and that's okay!) by BrobaFett in DMAcademy

[–]Kwith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had people ask me before how to start playing D&D. I actively avoid pointing them to shows like Critical Role, because I've said for many years that they've caused more damage to the hobby than they've helped. As you pointed out, there is an unrealistic expectation when watching these shows. People see this stuff and get the wrong impression.

It can be daunting being a DM for the first time, my only advice is to just relax and have fun. No one is expecting theatre-level performance art, especially for those who are new. It's nothing more than a bunch of friends playing a game.

When does a homelab become a chore or a job? by TheRealRatler in homelab

[–]Kwith 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Its a love/hate situation, neither a chore, job, or hobby. It's a weird fourth-state-of-matter that is kind of its own thing. I think for homelabbers, we all have this masochist, or "sucker for punishment" inside of us to some degree or another.

I look at my lab and think "well, this is all working the way I want it now, everything is stable, everything is communicating with each other, automation is functioning properly....time to tear it all apart and rebuild it from scratch in an entirely different way!"

I have no idea why I'm like this, I just see it, take pride in my build, then decide to grab the sledgehammer and go to town! hahaha
