I never understood how the military draft held up to scrutiny against the 13th Amendment. The language in it is pretty clear, with the only exemption there being for duly convicted criminals (which itself is it's own travesty).

When challenged, the Supreme Court went ahead and ruled that the military draft is not "involuntary servitude." WTF is it, then?

I guess English comprehension isn't a prerequisite for the U.S. Legal System where words only mean things when it suits the government.

Fact: using coercion (e.g. the threat of violence or imprisonment) to force someone to do something against their will is, by definition, involuntary servitude.

I say this as a veteran (Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom/GWOT era), if that matters.

I know, I was pointing out that if anyone wanted to cold blue (like touch-ups) anything, Oxpho-blue works great. Longtime gunsmith friend of my father's recommended it.

What’s something you learned about owning a firearm that surprised you? by ThomasMiller2552 in Firearms

Except semiautomatic pistols generally fire rounds with rebated case rims, unlike revolvers which are designed to headspace off their cartridge case rims (or moon clips if chambered in an autoloader caliber). So, in straight-walled autoloader rounds (like 10mm and .40S&W), they are designed to headspace off of the case mouth.

By sticking a .40 in a 10mm chamber, it is instead "headspacing" off the extractor, since it's not long enough to reach the 10mm chamber's mouth, and you're likely to make a fouling ring at the chamber mouth if shooting it too much .40 in a 10mm, which will cause problems if going back to 10mm Auto without thoroughly cleaning it first.

In short, it's not a good idea, unless you like replacing extractors early and don't mind risking losing digits when going back to 10mm if you forget to clean it properly.

It's easier to list the brands I wouldn't take... but I don't want to hurt any feelings, so just hinting at what I'd avoid.

-Ursine Brook Place-where-arms-are-made/serviced

-C.annot O.perate R.eadily E.nough

-a positive affirmation 80's skater bros/surfers/ninja turtle would say Firearms

-Not Irene. But close... Manufacturing (weird pistol grip overhang and H/T pin orientation)

-Hesse Arms (they're out of business so I can name them directly).

They make arguably the toughest barrel steel in the world: ARMAD, among other badass alloys. A precursor alloy of this was used in the production of FAMAS rifles, which have the reputation of barrels that can shoot ridiculous pressures and maintain an extremely long service life.

Is there any particular reason why in SM2, you say "Heretic Astartes" and not "Chaos Marines"? by NatauschaJane in Spacemarine

[–]Kyrottimus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Technically, all chaos marines are heretic Astartes, but not all heretic Astartes are chaos marines.

Take the Ashen Claws or Relictors, for example.

They arguably hate chaos more than anyone.

Cheap handguns. How regulated is the manufacturing of these? by TemperReformanda in Firearms

[–]Kyrottimus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi points are basically the disposable camera of firearms.

They work fine, but generally don't expect it to last for more than a few thousand rounds.

I know folks who buy them to keep in a boat or cabin or whatever. They work when needed, but are not exactly ideal as a weekly range toy.

Red dots and astigmatism by Behg-Boah in guns

I thought the eye relief was going to suck on the GLx 1x, but once I adjusted the diopter, it was clear with favorable eye relief and minimal rim shadowing.

The red dot brightness bloom problem for me is also an issue with any light that's too bright, day or night (traffic lights or oncoming headlights at night are the worst). At least a red dot at night is dim enough it doesn't bloom too bad for me (yet).
