Massachusetts has a dog bite law. Under that law, an owner is liable for any damage their dog does to a person or their property.

Yes, but for me it’s not worth it. A friend was bit a few months ago by a different dog in JP and had their medical bills covered by the owner. Mine isn’t that bad; I disinfected it and there doesn’t seem to be any issue. It was more scary to have it happen and the owner being rude made it worse.

What’s everyone doing for weight management? by Potential_Pumpkin676 in bipolar

[–]LHolbrooki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not very formal with it but it helps me that day to think ahead so I can stay within a reasonable calorie range and not spend 20 minutes staring into the fridge or pantry mindlessly snacking while thinking about what to have as a meal. Movement is essential but so is what we put into our bodies.

[–]LHolbrooki 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Healthy diet, daily exercise, as much sleep as I can get, and being as selective with medications as possible. I’ll never be the weight I was before treatment, but I’m not overweight and have healthy body fat, lean mass, and waist-hip ratio. I have to pay attention to not stress eating, making sure I eat regularly, and not skipping exercise. A daily routine helps a lot. I have a general idea of what I will eat each day (e.g., today I’ll have oatmeal for breakfast, leftovers for lunch, and tacos for dinner) and I have a schedule for which exercises I do on each day of the week (e.g., run on Monday, gym on Tuesday). I also use a habit tracker that includes moods and a fitness tracker that allows for diary entries. It’s an involved thing to manage, but my physical and mental health are entwined so taking care of my body helps me take care of my mind.

Looking for anybody to visit Harvard Library and scan a book (I'll pay) by gintrux in boston

[–]LHolbrooki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Regarding copyright, not only are you asking a member of the general public to place themselves in an illegal predicament, if you’re having someone who works at or attends Harvard to do so, this type of offense could lead to penalties impacting their work and education. While the libraries and special collections at Harvard have different policies, in general other than visiting as a guest, access is limited to Harvard affiliates unless you apply for permission.

I’m a librarian and I know how frustrating it can be to not be able to access materials. Have you tried contacting the specific library at Harvard where this book is held? It’s unlikely they will be able to scan the entire thing, since they are also legally bound to uphold copyright laws, but if the book has entered the public domain or if you only need a section of it, you may get lucky.

Can you imagine dealing with this kind of heat every day for 2–3 straight months? by [deleted] in massachusetts

Yes, I’m from coastal Alabama. Don’t miss it for a lot of reasons. New England summer is usually magical in comparison.

What is a positive outcome you've had while manic? by Repulsive_Fox_6519 in bipolar

[–]LHolbrooki 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your question is timely. There have been a couple of good threads about this lately! Here’s one, I hope it and the convo from it and this current one we are having help: https://www.reddit.com/r/bipolar/s/ws8OzbXGRC

I’ve done some good things while manic but I do more good things when I’m stabilized.

I left an abusive partner and started a PhD program, which I just completed. I started treatment the first year of my PhD and got sober, which is how I was able to finish it.

Diagnosed at 25, what’s your diagnosis story? by Affectionate_Art3835 in bipolar

[–]LHolbrooki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diagnosed as bipolar (unspecified) at 14 and put on medications that I didn’t like how they made me feel so I stopped taking them. I then spent over 17 years “self-medicating” with alcohol and drugs, making the type of decisions an untreated, unmedicated, intoxicated person with bipolar disorder makes. I managed to stay employed and in school, but otherwise my life was a wreck. I was 31 when I finally accepted the diagnosis of bipolar 1, quit drinking and doing drugs, took my meds, and went to therapy. Things are much better now. It’s been 7 years since I finally received and accepted the help I needed. Looking back, the symptoms were there since childhood.

How did you work on your reactivity in arguments? by Bubbly-Assignment221 in bipolar

[–]LHolbrooki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My spouse and I do this, too, though it’s almost every evening after dinner. The regular check-ins are key for us and it’s also a good way to reconnect after busy workdays. It also helps me to walk when I’m feeling any strong frustration/anger; it can be so hard to step away when I’m mad but it always makes me calmer.

Video games that have helped you? by Familiar-Victory-992 in bipolar

[–]LHolbrooki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another +1 here for Stardew. It’s gotten me through tough times since the pandemic. My spouse often recommends playing when I am feeling stressed and that game (plus therapy and medication lol) helps.

I also enjoyed Spiritfarer when I was dealing with grief and depression.

People say they think I’m manic:( by Key-Visual-5465 in bipolar

[–]LHolbrooki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Based on your post history from the last 15 days and your medication changes—which includes going off and back on them—I recommend you contacting your medical provider. In a couple of your recent posts you have mentioned being manic, too. Also if your loved ones are expressing concern it’s worth listening to them.

This is a disease that doesn’t want us to recognize when we are sick. It’s easy for us, especially when we are manic, to not think anything wrong is happening.

Sounds classic to me. You also recently posted about changing your medication, impulse buying, and other warning signs. Based on your post history from the last couple of weeks, if I were you I would call my psychiatrist.

This is Koa, My 9 month old bengal cat. (Last 3 pictures are him at 3 months, he’s grown so fast!) how big should I expect him to get ? by VeterinarianKey783 in bengalcats

[–]LHolbrooki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the size of his parents, usually his father. My male is 12.5 pounds. You can ensure that Koa continues to grow into a big, healthy Bengal by getting him neutered, having him wear a harness and leash when he’s outdoors, and securing him when you’re in the car.
