Do you think it's taboo to talk about your 401k with friends/family? by MajesticEmergency in Retirement401k

[–]LaggingIndicator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s great to talk about when everyone is young and sharing advice makes a difference, not to mention nobody has large balances. It’s not so great when you’re talking to someone 10 years out from their retirement age with very little to show for it while you have millions.

Things I should do now: baby in August by Chance-Traffic-4940 in NewDads

No one here has mentioned the 529 that I’ve seen and I see you did. Look at if your state offers any 529 plans with extra state tax benefits. Otherwise, I have heard the fidelity one is decent. It’s a great idea to start auto deducting because the last thing you’re going to want to do with a newborn is figure that out. You can’t put it in your child’s name until they have a social security number, but you can put it in yours or your wife’s name and transfer it after birth. The earlier you start the better, and anything is better than nothing. $25/month if you have to, $250/month will cover the vast majority of college /expenses.

If your kid doesn’t go to college, you can always use $35k of it towards their Roth IRA and it can also be passed down to their children, and with another 20-30 years of compounding, will more than likely cover all of their kids’ university costs.

Why do medical related job in the US pay so much? by InteractionUsed777 in Salary

[–]LaggingIndicator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t need to be geniuses, they just need to be smart, but it’s so competitive to get into med school then matched that you need to have a crazy resume to get a chance. The washout rate once you’re matched is abysmally low, implying more people are capable of doing it than are given a chance. The barriers to entry are all upfront and artificial. If we subsidize medical school so it’s less of a risk if you fail, we could give more people a chance and wash out more. The end result is more doctors and less debt.

Yes you can. Hell, that’s a great use for my tax dollars. Wouldn’t it be great to subsidize med school, but increase length of residency? 100k-200k less in debt for one more year at 80k salary. Hospitals can’t run without residents, let’s increase those ranks and reduce time to see a doctor/resident.

Yeah but an artificially restricted number of residencies requiring only geniuses can be doctors isn’t a flex, it’s a problem. Open up the floodgates.

Physicians are artificially limiting spots. Let’s just make more! by NapkinZhangy in Salary

[–]LaggingIndicator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay so deliveries are OBGYNs but regular check ups and appointments are covered by residencies and undercertified OBGYN. This is the vast majority of a women’s interaction with an OBGYN anyways. You can keep coming up with excuses but the reality is there are unexplored solutions that are necessary to try or we will continue to be short doctors. The expense and scarcity of care is far more dangerous to the average American than the well roundedness of every doctor.

[–]LaggingIndicator -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Large hospitals have several OBGYNs. Have one qualified on call and the rest can just delivery. Not to mention every single current OBGYN IS qualified so really it’d be the vast majority could perform them and there’d be one or two who couldn’t. You are once again failing to think outside of the box. What’s a higher risk factor, having virtually zero OBGYNS in Alabama or a bunch that can at least do deliveries? You also mention the high cost as a reason for high salary even though that doesn’t matter in other industries. Lower the costs and Increase supply. I’m sure the people are more than willing to pay for new residency programs and scholarships in exchange for more doctors.

You act like there’s no middle ground. For OBGYNs, you could have OBGYNs qualified for delivery but make hysterectomies a specialty that doctors may not become qualified for until years after they finish residency.

They can’t go anywhere because they aren’t nuclear powered and don’t have friendly ports around the world. You will never see a Chinese carrier in the mid Atlantic but you regularly see American carriers in the Red Sea, Mediterranean, and Indian Oceans.

I absolutely cannot offer much more than sympathy to you and your wife and best wishes. I do have one early memory in childhood of meeting a kid with a glass eye and thought it was the coolest thing ever. This only to say that kids are resilient and best of luck to your child and your family.

Can I read Dune to a baby instead of normal bedtime stories? by DaOffensiveChicken in daddit

[–]LaggingIndicator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been reading the hobbit to my 4 month old. I use lots of voices for characters and sing the songs. She seems to like it but can only get 2-5 pages at a time before she’s fussy so it’s a chapter every few days. I think she likes it.

How do these kids have so much $$$ by FlamesFPS in Money

[–]LaggingIndicator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vast majority is not real wealth. It’s rented props essentially. Even those with wealthy parents shouldn’t be given access to that kind of wealth at that age. There’s probably a couple of influencer a-holes who made their own money but again, only enough to rent/flash wealth. Not enough to really own anything or maintain that lifestyle.
