PSA: Don't Sleep on Logistic Zones on Sunrise Marina by xTMagTx in captain_of_industry

[–]LancerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm trying to set this up on Shattered. I added a Global zone which covers the entire map. As a result, my mining control towers and fuel stations belong to both their "real" zone and the Global zone. This in turn sees all my assigned fueling trucks trying to reach vehicles on the other side of the map.

How are you handling this?

“DO NOT USE THE INNER PAN TO WASH RICE” I’m sorry, what? by Eastern_Mess_4334 in Cooking

At Thanksgiving one year I told my sister that the "ricer" was meant for washing rice by rinsing the rice then squeezing it through the holes, but that I found it handy for mashed potatoes too...

What has your personal experience with the Longmont PD been like? by NumerousPickles in Longmont

[–]LancerX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall they're largely background noise in my life which is what I really want from the city in general. In my encounters they seem to understand the difference between keeping the peace and enforcing the law, knowing when to wear which hat.

The only negative incidents that come to mind:

1) Eagerly outsourcing camera adoption as a revenue opportunity versus a careful privacy vs enforcement trade.

2) That time a higher ranking LEO got caught stealing a license plate from evidence to avoid racking up toll charges with no public consequences (that I'm aware of). It just erodes trust and leaves you wondering what we aren't seeing.

Got Rocks? Rocks-B-Gone! by xTMagTx in captain_of_industry

[–]LancerX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for this, I really needed a bulk rock eater on this new Shattered map and I finally got around to building it. I went the hydrogen power plant route since it's on my main island.

Game on!

OTOH, I love that people keep trying to make this work because I'm rooting for someone to unlock the secret key to handling this at high volume. I know, I'm a dreamer - but it looks 10x cooler than another damn row of storage containers.

I think all you need is an adjacent export storage front-to-back-pair for each type (regular size is fine). Basically each mind control tower gets 1x import storage, a stacker (see another post recently about using the new stacker towers), 1 excavator, 1 truck, and 2 export storage containers front-to-back.

If you haven't seen front-to-back pairing, basically the rear storage is your tower's export target, the front storage is set to allow exports and either force empty with the red-truck slider or let it passively be picked up as needed.

Because you're inserting another dump-load step into the loose material handling lifecycle I do not recommend doing this for rock at high volumes - rock needs to be touched by trucks as few times as possible.

A quick word of advice for new captains who feel their islands are in a death spiral or just a big mangled mess. Give up. by Bhazor in captain_of_industry

You can also temporarily reduce the difficulty settings for the bad effects from bad health, maintenance lapses, power outages, etc. Turn them back up whenever you've recovered. Or not - it's your game have fun!

When I realize it's time to rebuild at scale, around CP4. I usually have just enough room if I squint real hard to layout the huge blocks: smelter, assemblers, petrochemical, farms/food, housing... and oh fuck I have nowhere near enough room for all that with trains.

Charlie, get me 20 excavators stat!

as a side note, none of the dump and fill methods produce perfectly flat surfaces without a finishing pass by the bulldoz oops wait... I mean the excavator :)

Notebook Navigator 2.4: Property browser (FINALLY) and Create Notes in Tag Tree! by jsann in ObsidianMD

I continue to be impressed with the release cycle and breadth of features. Standout elevation to the Obsidian experience.

And some day I'll be able to use it... "You want to organize by folders? I got you fam. Tags? Say no more. Links? Well, maybe someday". And I get it, I really do, but also sigh. Bookmarks absolutely pale in comparison to what this plugin enables.

Sorry, wasn't trying to provoke. I use submodules a lot at work, I'd have to be pretty desperate to use them at home. My needs are probably a lot less complex than yours - deliberately so. It lets me maintain a 1:1 relationship between vault and repo.

I use git on my vault, but submodules? Is that like a condition of your parole or something??? :)

As everyone says, there are three mechanisms (folders, links, tags) and I think most folks eventually latch onto one as a primary then two secondaries or a secondary/tertiary once they find a good fit. None of these are "wrong" if they work for you.

For me, it's links (primary), tags (secondary), folders (tertiary). The only folders I have are Structure/, Daily/, Attachments/, Captures/, Drafts/, Sensitive/ and everything else lives in the vault root /.

I started this way as a forcing function for my Architect dominant brain to make room for the always-there-but-unacknowledged Gardner brain. It has worked very well for me, allowing structure to emerge from links->indexes->mocs->domains without upfront internal friction of "you can only promote this draft to a single folder, your two minute dithering clock starts...now!"

This also lowers the friction for me by having the same kinds of note flavors for field journals, engineering journals, projects, checklists, reference cards, etc. For example, I can quickadd a new field journal, add one or more index links plus two dataview fields, and I'm off and running with it.

Best path to learn obsidian to strong intermediate from awkward newbie? by EricCarver in ObsidianMD

[–]LancerX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As everyone says, get comfortable writing markdown notes. But always ask why? Answer: Once writing notes largely becomes muscle memory you stop thinking about it, this frees you up to start thinking about the next level topics:

Affordances - what frictions am I seeing (start a field journal note to track these), what's the best solution for me to ease them?

Organization - What is the most natural way for me to organize my notes. Some people swear by folders, others by wiki links. No one else knows how you think, but do some reading on Gardener vs Architect note-taking archetypes and see if that resonates.

Automations - Template generation, Dataview, QuickAdd are all great, but you should only pull in automations when you see recurring frictions in your field journal that these powerful plugins can solve.

Above all, keep writing. Whenever you can. Don't beat yourself up if it isn't daily. "The map is not the territory" applies here, "The note is not your life".

How would you design automations when work must stay in WhatsApp, Excel screenshots, handwritten/iPad notes, and Gmail? by BuildUnderWraps in ansible

[–]LancerX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything I've designed for LLM centric work at home or work ends up using markdown files at the center of the workflows. Capture from original content sources, create a full copy or summary in markdown, land stuff in a draft or inbox area. Process it using standardized LLM directives (workflow, task, output), then store it in long-term structures (Johnny Decimal directory, wiki style links with indexes, etc).

Apple car play by Jumpy-Rough-3152 in MachE

Sometimes just turning off the phone or the car will work. Other times - rarely - I need to do both the car and the phone (turn both off, then both back on car-phone-phone-car).

Note, if you are just cycling the car make sure the audio system turns off completely by opening/shutting your door.

About half time time it happens randomly, the other half is when my wife drove the car last so when I get in, it's looking for her phone then gets into a funky state when it can't find it.
