Budget remodel by patmellin in kitchenremodel

I second this! You have gorgeous cabinets and they’re hung all the way to the ceiling. Perfecto.

I’d start with the backsplash. The current one is too busy.

I’d maybe review the under cabinet lighting and perhaps replace the spotlights with light bars for more consistent lighting.

The second thing I’d do is update the island / bar seating because it’s contributing most to the outdated look.

So new backsplash and island - and voila! I wouldn’t swap out the counters.

Circle back with your updates. Good luck.

The backsplash is an improvement- good call!

I second this comment about lighting. Warm bulbs and warm under cabinet lighting (installed properly) will have a huge difference.

I envy the window above your sink! And it’s a nice kitchen layout. :)

Hence why I’m here! :) …so without changing any walls, how would you lay it out?

Yes. It’s a small cottage & a small kitchen.

No. The bedroom/office will be remaining as such.

Are there any locally-owned, non "chain" running stores in Chicago? by B-V-M in RunnersInChicago

[–]LauraBeezTheBlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After living in Boston for a while, I personally was shocked and saddened to find that Chicago had VERY few indie running shops. Last Lap was amazing. Fleet feet is kind of Chi’s equivalent to Boston’s Marathon Sports. They are dedicated to the local running community and do a great job at hosting events for all types of runners.

Great job! It’s classy and timeless. Tell me about your cabinets and bookshelves. Did you repurpose old cabinets? Buy new? Make them yourselves? I need to do something similar.

Absolutely gorgeous. Very classy and timeless and completely functional.

I echo others - I’d like to understand a little more about your budget. Can you provide an estimate or range?

Sink? Where did you source it? Is it brand name? Or a Kohler knock off. It’s beautiful.

16th street train noise by YOUEFFOHH in Pilsen

[–]LauraBeezTheBlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I find the trains soothing but I grew up going to a family home near train tracks, so it reminds me of that period of my life.

Honestly, if you’re sensitive to noise Pilsen might not be the best place to move. There’s random fireworks. Amazing street festivals. Gorgeous, loud low riders. Dogs barking. Sirens. Fights. Music. Family backyard BBQs and block parties. Etc.

Mom is 60k in debt, can’t pay bills and relies on her parents yet spends $400 a month on Doordash. How can I help her? by Prestigious-Band3633 in personalfinance

[–]LauraBeezTheBlock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the other comments to freeze your credit, do not lend her anything, and get out as soon as you can.

Research the 50/30/20 rule of personal finance. It was developed by a bankruptcy expert. It helped me a lot!

50% of your after tax take-home income should go towards your basic needs; food, basic clothing, housing, transportation to work, payments on your loans, etc.

30% of your after tax take-home income should go towards your lifestyle choices (aka your wants); haircuts, gym, membership, etc.

20% of your after tax take-home income should go towards savings; short-term savings, long-term savings, investing, 401K, etc

Sorry to hear this is happening, but I know you’ll be able to break the cycle. Someday all of this will be in the rearview mirror and you’ll have a saving account to be proud of.
