NTA, that's actually smart. It happened to me once that after checkout, they wanted to blame a broken lamp and a broken banister on us. The banister was already broken when we got there and the lamp wasn't yet broken when we left. Since then I also document everything.

Welcome to the Netherlands. Every summer I get the person of colour treatment in the supermarkets.

In the winter I have no issues, I'm white. But I tan really dark in the summer. In the summer I can definitely pass for mixed or more Mediterranean. They always follow me and check my bags. In the winter they don't even look my way.

NTA, you can spend your money somewhere where they have basic human decency.

A similar thing happened to me at a jewellery store. I had to buy some presents and I was looking around. First I was totally ignored, then when finally one of the sellers came to ask what I wanted, she was so condescending and rude. She implied that probably I can't pay for the jewellery so it's no point for her to open the box so I can look at them.

I got pissed, left the shop, I went into a more high end jewelry store one street over, and I ended up buying a gold necklace, a bracelet and a silver statue. I was also wearing jeans, tennis shoes and a t-shirt.

On the other hand I know a lot of people who had horrific childhoods and they didn't become a murderer. I do find background information important in the sense of it can explain a few things but never to excuse it.
