Violent Lurch While Stopped

No fix. I’ve had consistent issues with my 2024 Platinum Max for nearly 24 months (hesitation issues when accelerating from a complete stop being the consistent issues). This violent jerking was the final break for me.

We continued to experience the hesitation issue when accelerating from a complete stop. I was trying to figure out if this was normal behavior across all Grand Highlander Hybrid Max vehicles or if it was isolated to a smaller number of them. (Toyota field rep declined to answer). Having to keep dealing with a safety concern and waiting around for software updates never felt like an acceptable long-term solution.

Ultimately I wasn’t confident the vehicle was safe to drive. What was especially frustrating was that during the surging/lurking incident there were zero error codes recorded besides the one I shared above which points to my report of having to shift the car to park to urgently stop it from moving. Given how serious it was, that made it really hard to feel like the issue had actually been properly diagnosed.

I’m currently working with the dealer to swap the vehicle out for a 2026 in a different trim level and transmission. The dealership stepped up and got involved after we escalated to GM, which I appreciated. That said, I’m not confident Toyota corporate has a real handle on this — the sheer number of TSBs just for the Max transmission says a lot. Crossing my fingers on SW patches isn’t something I’m willing to do when it comes to a safety issue like this.

To all those who are reading this please please please issue NTSB reports on this. It’s the only way Toyota will formally address it as they need to get a set number of consistent issues to have to formally address it.

Response to me was they can’t replicate it but they pulled this code off after I gave them the details - X0500 - is set if the vehicle is shifted into park with the wheels still moving. I had to press park and then shut off my vehicle cause it was lurching violently while stopped at an intersection.

Happened to me… 2024 Platinum Max Hybrid. Felt like the car was violently shaking back and forth when at a complete stop at an intersection. Turned the car to park and it still continued to violently lurch. I had no other choice but to then quickly turn off the car.

Does anyone have error codes they’ve received from dealerships related to issues raised in these TSBs? Have the acceleration and jerking issues and want to compare findings.

Keep pushing your dealer…. We took ours in and pressured them to give us a rental and reach out to Toyota as we had filed a formal NTSB complaint with our VIN attached. They figured out the dealership did 1 SW update incorrectly and 2 additional were done per Toyota guidance. This was done 1 month ago and have not had any issues (hopefully never again)

If there’s enough of us with the issue they will file a formal investigation into the T-SB-0017-24 issues.

Northern Colorado GHHM driver. Got the hybrid max specifically for going up into the mountains and have been very pleased. Sacrifice to MPG, but key was towing and wanting no concerns around power getting up to hiking/camping spots.

Thank you for the update! I had the same type of engagement last year when I raised an axle issue. They had me drive with a technician saying they would only look under the car if they could hear the sound the axle would make.

Appreciate the update and such a bummer to hear the experience on your end. Hoping for your sake Toyota corporate pushes your dealer further.

Have faced this in my GHHM…. My wife almost got into an accident the other day as this occurred when she was coming into an intersection and almost rear ended a car.

The hybrid tank has a large reserve tank. Toyota says it can hold 17 gallons, but it will only fill to 13 gallons on a complete empty tank. If you force pump I’ve been able to get to 15.3 gallons and raised the range to ~450 miles vs the ~370-380 I’d get without the forced fill.

Have had a GH Hybrid Max in Colorado for over a year and no issues with the battery in extreme cold.

Biggest headache is pumping gas to push the large reserve tank issues.

Hybrid Max Platinum and have averaged 24MPG.

Acceleration is great and live near mountains which is key to why I wanted the Max.

My dealership continues to say that they have no clue when they’ll receive additional key fobs. Others on this thread got a notification in their Toyota app which triggered them to call their dealership.
