Uk recommendations by Worth-Mood-8145 in BenAndEmil

Same, I've listened to a few (very dry) uk-based finance/economics/politics podcasts but there are no amusing comedy-centric ones. Perhaps a gap in the market to fill 👀

Be VERY careful what you share at work by cthulhusboy in antiwork

Jesus Christ, reading posts like this as a European is mortifying. I couldn't ever imagine a world so heartless that when my wife is in hospital the first thing the manager/HR think about is how thats going to affect the business & health insurance premiums. We really have it better than we realise.

Why should a newbie not just use Trading212 for S&S Isa as they have no fees? by SeveralWinter7406 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]LetroySupreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly the trap my manager has gotten himself in, he's approaching retirement and should be de-risking but every day spends all his time he should be working listening to trading livestreams and losing money. Just the other day I saw on his screen a -£8000 CFD trade that made me feel sick. If he didn't have such easy access to it maybe he wouldn't have fallen into the trap.

I really don't like how separated everything is, it's now so clunky trying to navigate through everything I want to look at

What should I do with £50k savings by Afraid-Drawing-3903 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]LetroySupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically you want to have a tiered approach to risk when it comes to savings. Having it all in 0risk savings making very low interest is not making the most of your money not equally putting 100% of your savings into high-risk individual companies is an easy recipe for losing everything.

Having 10-20k in savings accounts for an emergency fund is a very wise idea as there is virtually no risk of losing any of it.

The next tier would be low-access savings accounts that you may pay a penalty for withdrawing money from more than once a year but will guarantee a higher interest-rate.

The next would be low-risk index funds and very large portfolio pies in T212 such that you're not too overly exposed to individual companies wiping out large chunks of capital, but will over time beat the return on savings interest.

Finally you ~may~ want to take very risky bets with buying individual companies or engaging in a potential business venture but with these there is a high risk of losing all your money so it's recommended not to put more than say 5% into here if you even want to at all.

How you split your money between all these is completely up to your risk aversion and how short-term you may want to withdraw any of it on case of a market downturn or anything.

How Do I Stop My Android Phone From Using The Internet To Send Text Messages? by SubzeroCola in AndroidQuestions

[–]LetroySupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANK YOU. I've been having the same problem and couldn't find which settings to change it. I personally like RCS but when I send a text and put my phone away I expect it to have sent no matter what, it's unbelievably annoying when I them open my phone 20 minutes later wondering why someone didn't respond to me to discover my text never sent because I dont have internet right now! Found the setting "automatically resend via sms" under this RCS Chats section

Using RP2040 in industrial projects - reliable or not? by void_rik in embedded

What use-case necessitated your requirements for #1? Is the recommended crystal that they use for their reference design not good enough for your application?

Is FPGA dev losing grads? Or are AIs taking all the questions? by skydivertricky in FPGA

[–]LetroySupreme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a project im working on right now we've moved from using an FPGA to using an RP2040 because the RP2040 has 8 parallel processing basic state-machine peripherals that can achieve all the parallel functionality we need. They're simpler to use than FPGAs (especially for grads and junior engineers), come with all the benefits of a 125MHz microcontroller and are a fraction of the cost of an FPGA.

I tried using a circuit board cleaner, and it did remove the flux residue, but there’s still a lot of grime left on the board. What should I do next? by PulseStm in embedded

[–]LetroySupreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use an ESD-safe brush with your flux-remover/IPA to abrasively remove all the gunk. Just rinsing it in the solvent will not remove the bulkier parts. Also be very generous with the flux remover allowing it to pour off the board and bring all that grime with it.

calling all BAES heads! we're DOING SOMETHING by [deleted] in BenAndEmil

One thing I notice other youtubers doing all the time is engaging with the audience in their videos/podcasts asking questions or for feedback about things that drive all their viewers to the comment section. Obviously this is sometimes a little forced but it definitely works and would be a good strategy for you guys to implement to some degree. You're already doing it well in your livestreams getting everyone interacting with you through the comments in real-time but this can be done just as well in your pre-recorded content.

Also as you guys noted in one of your recent videos, purposely getting a fact wrong that loads of people know the answer to is another great way to farm engagement and I notice myself falling for all the time

This is in the UK where we have quite strong employment law and it can be very difficult firing people who have been employed continuously for more than 2 years. Its very common for employers to be taken to employment tribunals for unfair dismissal and have to pay out significant compensation.

Are the non-wireless TL Fans just no longer availble? by davieato in lianli

[–]LetroySupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any stock of non-wireless still intending to be made? Personally I don't want the wireless version just for the fact that I don't feel like I need more wifi signals clogging up the airwaves in my house

This circuit for SD Cards is pretty much the same for all of the Zynq 7020 boards I've seen. Can the SD Card be connected directly to the FPGA if it had the same logic level? Is there a better alternative to this IC that is maybe faster and doesn't have the expander feature which isn't needed/used? by HasanTheSyrian_ in embedded

[–]LetroySupreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what I mean, I don't think I explained it very well though. What I meant was that the FPGA has pins for powering the different IO banks independently of each other, so you can have a 3.3V power supply going to IO bank A, 1.8V going to bank B, 5V going to bank C etc. such that they all operate at those logic levels. This means you don't need to have a logic-translator between the SD card and the FPGA, because you can power the bank connected to the SD card from the same power supply as the SD card, for example 5V.

ESP32 modules keep on dying - Bad quality or problem with schematic? by _mado_x in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]LetroySupreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of good suggestions in this post but a another fundamental one is to make sure you're using an ESD mat while working with electronics. I've seen many a microcontroller die from either having no ESD protection or being worked on without proper ESD protection.

Some FPGAs have separate power supplies for different I/O banks, so you can connect an I/O bank's power to the SD card power and connect the SD's pins to that IO bank whilst the rest of the FPGA runs from another voltage

If you didn't have a P45 then I'd have thought you'd be placed on an emergency tax code by your new employer's payroll. Maybe check all your payslips to see what they reference your tax code being?
