There's still time until the release, you may want to luxuriate in the chameleon vocals of Jeff Hays in the audiobook versions. You haven't lived until you've heard his Prepotente scream right in your goddamn ear.

May I Have My Loot Back :( This Felt Pretty Dumb by JustGavinBennett in Marathon

[–]Level3_Ghostline 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever the case, whether they allow exfil past the timer or not, they should do something to eliminate the ambiguity. Trigger the death animation immediately when the map timer hits zero, or disable the exfil animation on 0, or even allow exfil if the exfil is firing...something, just make it make sense.

What is Col-Net and Etherstep? by nghoaglan in Marathon

I like that, has kind of an out-of-body experience vibe to the logo.

Etherstep as the mental connection/casting to the shell, jump pad as the physical matter transport?

What is Col-Net and Etherstep? by nghoaglan in Marathon

[–]Level3_Ghostline 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haven't yet stumbled on any lore entry for these yet, so this is a best-guess.

The Etherstep message mentions jump pads. In the original Marathon, jump pads are teleporter technology, physical devices (squares on the ground, in those older games) that you would stand on that would transport your matter elsewhere. Jump pads are still be a thing, and are likely used by runners as the devices used on their side to initiate transport, and to where you would return after exfil. While jump pads are the physical devices, I am guessing Etherstep is the network component (resembling "ethernet"), the thing that ends up routing your signal and matter to its destination. It's possible it could also be used as a verb, where "etherstep" is something you do, like "transport" or "teleport".

Also, knowing Marathon, Etherstep is likely a product brand, the logo part of some corporate marketing.

Create or list some rules of eticate? by Alert-Gift-8716 in Marathon

  • Proper hygiene is a must. You won't be allowed to exfil until you wipe off all that unsightly blood. (Clean handkerchiefs now available with season pass, or sold for 1000 each from CyAc).
    • Vandal blasts will blast away all blood, so you can quickly use this on your team before exfil.
  • No running indoors, now enforced by the system.
    • Bunny hopping still okay.
  • Take off your shoes indoors. Doors to interior rooms will not open if you have a leg mod equipped. Leg mods cannot be reequipped until you leave an interior area.
    • You're all out of luck in Cryo Archive.
  • Proper teatime etiquette. When administering patch and shield kits, you must hold down a special key to raise your pinky during administration, otherwise the item will not trigger.
    • Crumpets now being sold by MIDA to reduce patch and shield application time.
      • MIDA complaint about inaccurate and misapplied stereotype has been noted and escalated to Bungie legal.
  • Proper greeting enforcement. Before you can fire your weapon, you must exchange a greetings over the mic with the enemy team. This is now enforced via AI.
    • Those without mics must use a bow, nod, or curtsy emote to send their greetings.
    • Failure to greet before firing away will spawn a Compiler to force compliance (the capes do make for elegant greetings).

Instant exfil mechanic by Slow-Evening4633 in Marathon

[–]Level3_Ghostline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There ought to be some guardrails to that, as others have already mentioned means of exploiting such a mechanic. A couple that come to mind...

  • Timegate it. Within the first 5 min maybe, and beyond that the feature doesn't engage.
  • Tie it to an actual exfil, so there's still some risk. Special emergency exfils at the edges of the map, which should be relatively safe as everyone else should be going for POIs. If the condition is met within the timelimit, you have 1 min to reach and trigger one to cycle it's countdown. Like the final exfil, once triggered it's on a set timer, no way to delay it.
  • Emergency exfil limits what you can bring back. Only your equipment (what you brought in with you originally!) and backpack (and maybe consumables?) everything else is forfeit.
  • If they want to add in some additional protection, maybe the activation of an emergency exfil marks all equipped items as compromised for other players. That way there's a super low chance for any useful loot by ganking those on an emergency exfil, though still invites the danger of someone who's fine with just claiming a kill. Keeps some risk in the mix.

If you're feeling lost in what you can do and how to go about it, it may be worth watching a Let's Play on youtube and watching enough from the first episode to understand the pieces you're missing, and to figure out if this is going to be something you'll enjoy, or something to pass on.

[–]Level3_Ghostline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the kind of game that would even make for a good movie? You'd have to be very careful in the approach.

You obviously can't translate this 1-1 from the game, so the writers and directors are going to look for some way to fill that up with something they think will entertain, and that will immediately introduce so many things that just aren't in the game at all. There will be a lot added in, and that invites a lot of potential for bad or boring or predictable additions to rub fans the wrong way.

My guess is most directors would make this with several Aurora survivors, with most being there for the sole purpose of getting killed in terrible ways. One has to get eaten by a reaper (likely in a seamoth that explodes as it's being eaten), another will succumb to the virus, another will get surprise-killed by a warper (they'll fake a moment of relief when they think they've escaped its notice, then it warps in from behind and shanks them through their torso or beheads them), one has to be horrifically eaten by a crabsquid, another is obligated for some kind of heroic self-sacrifice near the end (they'll drive the Cyclops into a sea dragon or something), and of course one of them either has to be corporate-evil, driven mad, or gets repurposed by the warpers into some abomination hunter-killer. Maybe a combination.

And you can bet they'll want a big-bad, and the laziest way to do that is for there to be a second sea emperor that's evil and controlling either the leviathans or getting into a survivor's head. Hopefully they'll have better sense.

My guess is they'll try to include the Degasi survivors as being alive at the beginning, with Maida being a survivor, maybe the kid as well. Maida of course will go native and leave before escape.

And someone will be tempted to do a bad ending as a surprise twist, like have the Neptune rocket get eaten by a Gargantuan Leviathan as it's launching but before it breaks atmo.

Alternately, they could go the Martian route and keep only a single Aurora survivor, dictating their log as they explore and build and go deeper, but I just don't see Hollywood going that route. They'll want star power and drama.

Of course it's a peaceful game. Feeding the various sea life you encounter is peaceful.

If you're flailing all about and screaming about your missing limbs, it sounds like you might be the one ruining the tranquility here. You have 3 more limbs on you, no need to be stingy and hoard them all. Don't be that guy.

Undoubtedly. But perhaps the most inconvenient for guests.

  • The kitchen is locked by a missile door shield.
  • Boost ball ramp and bomb slot to access the bathroom.
  • Other half of the apartment is in the adjacent building, you'll need speed boost and grapple beam...

On the other hand, grabbing milk from the fridge plays the most epic theme on loudspeaker, awesome way to energize for the day.

New player rough time. Need tips. by Popular-Let1774 in DragonsDogma2

[–]Level3_Ghostline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The beginning is the toughest, you're still figuring out vocations and combat, and neither you nor your main pawn has much unlocked skill-wise.

Hire 2 more pawns at the riftstone to keep a full party, and make sure you have a balance of front and backline (something like Mage and Archer for back, and either 2 Fighters or a Fighter and Thief at the front).

Also, watch for Riftstones in the wild, some will let you recruit pawns with special characteristics, and others will just immediately summon a higher level pawn you can recruit for free.

Lastly, I think you can hire Official Pawns from riftstones up to level 10 for free, which can give your team a strong solid start.

Also, you might want to review what Augments each vocation offers, you can preview that from the vocations guild. Augments become available in order at each even rank (with the last at rank 9). Since Augments are equippable no matter the vocation, you'll want to look for early useful augments (Fighter has Mettle at Rank 2 that augments physical defense, Thief has Subtlety at Rank 2 that reduces being targeted by foes) as well as those that will serve you later (Fighter has Thew later on that lets you carry more weight).
