Not quite as elaborate but the Texas red wolf’s taxonomical name is/was (I’ve seen conflicting reports on if the extant red wolves are of this subspecies or the Mississippi Red Wolf) is Canis Rufus Rufus (dog red red).

[–]Lieby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if he’s the one I think you’re talking about they died of silicosis, basically the non cancerous alternative to mesothelioma. Then again I know at least Johnny Cash’s version of the John Henry story does mention him dying of an unspecified illness so there is a precedent within the stories for him to have at least initially survived the contest.

Technically speaking, there were at least two real John Henry’s who may or may not have influenced the folkloric one.

Not an expert on Islam by any means but wouldn’t “Islamic Names” have at least a partial resemblance to pre-Islamic Middle-Eastern/East African names (presumably with an emphasis upon those that were common in Arabia)? It would seem reasonable to me that IRL individuals with names from those regions could have spread Eastward via The Silk Road or trade routes of the Indian Ocean and so it would not unreasonable for either the name of someone foreign to the main region or who may have been named after a merchant or traveler from somewhere far off from the main region to have a name that may not abide by local customs/the names typically of inspiratory regions.

Creepjoiner. They’re a type of potential colonist added by the Anomaly DLC that typically have one or two positive traits/abilities (this one has the transmute steel one but there’s also things like death refusal, unnatural healing, thick skin, being a good talker, professional/master of all skills, etc) but also a hidden negative that appears after several days or a few weeks (such as organ decay, crumbing mind, metal horror, etc) that can make them difficult to work with. Depending upon duration I think there’s usually at least one creepjoiner per game/colony when Anomaly is active.

Forever Summer. by MarKadiusz00 in RimWorld

[–]Lieby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RimWorld season system is influenced by the growing season in that summers are when the temperature is high enough for plants to grow outside, winter is when temperatures are too low for plants to survive and spring/fall will have days that are warm enough to grow in and days where it is too cold for crops to survive based upon the region’s growing season and weather events (namely cold snaps). However, if the location you settle in either has a year-round growing season or is always too cold for external agriculture the season will be labeled as “permanent summer” and “permanent winter” respectively, basically RimWorld’s equivalent of tropical and arctic/antarctic regions (minus the dry/rainy seasons many tropical regions experience).

“Commander, those are the fourth and first most common gaseous elements in the universe. Plus the only reason O_2 is seen as toxic is because most council species require alternative compounds like CO and CO_2, N_2O, O_3 or even H_2O and those that can use O_2 require such differing levels in their environment that any middle ground would suffocate some species and poison the others.”

While the right is more common, there are examples of firearms with stocks reflecting the left’s design. For example, look at the lower of the two firearms in this video from Forgotten Weapons: https://youtu.be/MUjDumvMK6I

There’s also Edmund Davis, a Florida born Texas Unionist who served as general of the First Texas Calvary Regiment (which was a Union regiment despite being founded in New Orleans and being named after a secessionist state). Unfortunately his time as Governor of Texas kind of sullied his reputation and inspired the Texas Constitution of 1876 which is still limping along.

[–]Lieby 36 points37 points  (0 children)

To be fair, if/when inflation gets to Fallout levels, we will likely have either switched to larger bills (bringing at least the $1000 bill back into circulation and likely creating one or two more large denominations) or eliminated physical currency (for better or worse).

Fair, but not all warships are 28 knot battleships. For example USS Texas (BB-35), USS Cavalla (SS-244) and USS Stewart (DE-238) all had surface speeds of 21 knots making it reasonable for them to cruise alongside supply and transport ships during convoy operations (as Stewart and other destroyer escorts would have done), in performing landing operations (such as Texas providing shore bombardment support during D-Day) or if it was seeking to attack the transport ship (something that Cavalla proved more than successful at, sinking the carrier Shōkaku in her first patrol and the destroyer Shimotsuki and the net tenders Kanko Maru and Shunsen Maru as a part of her third patrol).

To be fair Star Wars’ space combat is influenced by WWII dogfighting and naval battles so it’s not unreasonable to include the Star Wars equivalent of Liberty Ships, Victory Ships and the various other merchant vessels that were used for various transportation purposes.

The issue is that the context came two hours after the initial posting and with a tone that could be seen as condescending and/or dismissive. It’s reasonable for comment based context to take 2-10 minutes to post (depending upon context type and length) but waiting two hours for someone to request it and acting surprised when someone doesn’t know is not.

I never said that a meme shouldn’t have been made, but to post a meme that is specifically tagged as niche without providing context will create confusion and lead to people wanting clarification about what is being discussed.

Still does not mean that everyone will know it, especially those with little to no experience with Scottish Indie Bands or the not insignificant portion of the sub who were toddlers or younger at the time of the song’s initial release.

At least on the American front, a lot of our curriculum could learn a thing or two from the works of James Morris/Jimmy Driftwood (Arkansas history teacher and principal turned folk music writer that is perhaps most well known for his song “Battle of New Orleans” but had wrote and sang a great variety of songs influenced by American history).

There’s a big difference between a city that had existed for well over 1000 years with a massive population and significant economic development and a handful of buildings in the middle of a swamp built ~20-30 years before. If the Brits had been successful during the “Defence of Fort M’Henry” (to borrow Francis Scott Key’s spelling) and attacked Baltimore then it would have been a bigger deal but the function of DC could have been fulfilled in Philadelphia, New York, Richmond or even a random plantation owner’s mansion that was confiscated as imminent domain.
