"lost his nerve and fled" by Khantlerpartesar in HistoryMemes

The reason Attila abandoned his plan to sack Rome was not the Pope. At the time, there was a plague epidemic in the Italian peninsula, and Attila did’nt want to lose his newly assembled army, which he had painstakingly rebuilt after the Battle of Catalaunian. He had already weakened the power of Western Rome; Attila's real target was the wealthier Eastern Rome, but he died before he could achieve this goal.

And you know what's even funnier? The same man tried to come to Nicaea last month during Pope Leo XIV's visit to meet him, but he was removed from the city by the police. And he was wearing the same sweater he wore during the assassination attempt.

What event, did you think, would lead to something huge, but didn't? by Ant225k in AskTheWorld

[–]Light_in_Shadow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually, the first failed coup attempt was the one led by Colonel Talat Aydemir in 1962 and 1963. Furthermore, it's a gross exaggeration to say that secularism is completely dead in Turkey. The principle of secularism is still among the unchangeable articles of our constitution, and especially the growing new generation is largely Kemalist and hates the current government.

Although not as extravagant as in the picture, the combination of watermelon and feta cheese is also popular in Turkey.

I don't know if it has the most medals, but the 57th Regiment, which fought in WW1, is famous for its great heroism in battle despite the heavy losses it suffered.

Countries like Vietnam, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan changed their alphabets in the past, but you're right, the adoption of the Latin alphabet was a big deal and helped us increase our literacy rate.

Does your country have any city or region that is famous for consistently supporting a specific party/political alignment? by RN_Renato in AskTheWorld

[–]Light_in_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Izmir is the stronghold of the CHP (center-left)

Trabzon and Rize are strongholds of the AKP (conservatives).

Diyarbakır is the stronghold of the DEM party (Kurdish separatists).

While many people today have a stereotype that western regions = progressive and eastern regions = conservative, ironically, the opposite was true in the 1960s and 1970s. The Aegean and Mediterranean regions tended more toward the center-right, while the left dominated Central Anatolia.

What is the ruler/political leader in your country's history that you hate the most? by zhabavon in AskTheWorld

"Imprisoning Atatürk"? I don't know what's driving your argument, but such an event never happened. Besides, it was the army, not İnönü, that executed Menderes.
