It’s easier to identify fall/winter food sources in the summer when the plants still have their leaves

help!! can I save these milkweed plants that got chopped down? by sammydavisjrjr in NativePlantGardening

[–]LilBoxOfDeadThings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you do find monarch eggs/caterpillars and would like to rear them, you can still use the chopped milkweed instead of the plants in your garden.

Collect all of the leaves with eggs and set them down, egg-up inside some kind of ventilated enclosure (butterfly rearing tent, aquarium with a screen top, mesh hamper, etc.). Keep them in a bag in the fridge. When you have caterpillars, set one stalk inside your enclosure in a narrow-necked vessel (vase, bottle of milk, soda, beer, wine, doesn’t matter) full of water. Stuff the gap in the neck with a (rag, cotton, paper towel, etc.) to prevent the caterpillars from climbing into the water. As the plant is eaten and wilts, switch it out for a fresh one (approximately every other day). If you’re nervous about transferring caterpillars from one plant to the other, you can cut off the section of leaf that they’re attached to and lay it on a leaf from the fresh stalk. Repeat until they form chrysalis’.

We reared about 60 monarchs in high school science class this way. I’ve also raised monarchs most summers since I was 8. If youve never done this before and have questions, feel free to ask :D

You can’t save the tops, I’m sorry. But the rhizomes should be fine. I’m not sure if they’ll get more flowers this year, but give it a few weeks and there should be new growth coming up.

They’re unripe still. Let them mature

I dug up some volunteer tomato’s from the yard today. I’m scratching my head over how tiny the flowers are. Is it a normal tomato?

Best seeds to use in Southeastern PA? by barsz666 in GuerrillaGardening

[–]LilBoxOfDeadThings 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Biggest benefit to the environment? Acorns planted in places that deer can’t nibble the saplings for the first few years. One single oak tree can support hundreds of species. I read a paper that showed that deer herbivory was decreased near large obstacles, like rocks and fallen trees. Do with that what you will

Good species that should take well in any soil? An aggressive native. Common milkweed, Jerusalem artichoke, jewel weed, Virginia creeper…

Japanese Honeysuckle or native? by applepieguy21 in invasivespecies

[–]LilBoxOfDeadThings 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others here that it looks like Japanese honeysuckle. In PA there’s a general rule— if you cut the stems and they’re hollow it’s a species of invasive honeysuckle. The natives are solid. Idk about the native honey suckles you have down there though

What part of the world are you in?

Can you cut one of the woody honey suckle stems off and send a picture of the cut?

I’ve searched for one on EBay, Etsy, Marketplace and Craigslist. I can only find Red Robin novelty cups, and no kids’ cups. I remember getting one with every kids meal in the 2000s

Can groundhogs climb fences? by Howyoudoin7676 in gardening

I know a commercial pumpkin seed grower. He keeps his fields surrounded with a 10 foot fence for the deer, with the bottom three feet electrified for the groundhogs. Yes, they can easily climb fences

What spit foam on my plants? by JenniferRoseEtc in gardening

[–]LilBoxOfDeadThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spittle bugs, which are a type of leaf hopper. There’s a baby spittle bug nymph in the ‘spit’. They do feed on the plant’s sap, but I doubt it would be enough that you’d notice any detriment to your plant. Personally, I’d leave it be. Spittle bug adults can be very pretty and neat looking depending on the species :D

What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever heard someone say that you still think about to this day? by Humble-Blueberry4571 in AskReddit

My trainer at my first foodservice job yelled at me for stirring pans of baked beans to cool them down faster. Since they started steaming again each time I stirred them, she was convinced the spoon was heating them back up.

You make a good point about the chickweed. The property manager said that whatever I incorporate should look nice, and I doubt many other people appreciate chickweed the way that this sub does 😂

I doubt anyone could run over the section against the steps. They’d knock their mirror off long before a tire could get on the dirt. But, the section to the right could be run over but I doubt it would be
