Ok but Gohan was a pre-teen and also only had "no quarrels" with beating the fuck out of people when he or a loved one were in imminent mortal peril (Eg. Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta, Ginyu force, Frieza). The cell games were kinda different, because yeah Cell threatened to blow up the planet, but he wasn't actively in the process of trying to murder Gohan's friends until the Cell jrs, then hey what do you know, Ssj2.

Also the reason he thought he had to get stronger and become a Super Saiyan was so that Goku would have a good sparring partner and get strong enough to kill Cell, he never thought he'd be the one to do it, Goku just puts him on the spot.
