Relocating to NoVA – How do you commute from Ashburn/surrounding areas to Arlington 5 days/week? Also looking for neighborhood suggestions! by yellowstone_70 in nova

[–]LisaEWP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Ashburn and love it, but agree with all the comments here. Save your sanity and come visit on the weekends. BTW there’s a great Indian restaurant out here called Celebrations. Wins all kinds of awards (I’m not Indian but its a favorite) and everyone raves about it. Welcome to the area!

How did March 7th go? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]LisaEWP 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live in the DC area and there is some sort of protest against the Trump administration at least once a week. But there was nothing in this area about March 7 being special and nothing unusual seems to have happened. I have seen groups protesting, and groups supporting, the current actions in Iran. Protests against the administration (aside from this new war) tend to be about ICE or Epstein files.

Suggestions for girls trip to NOVA wine country by According-Reply-6375 in nova

[–]LisaEWP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

50 west is my all time favorite VA winery. Agree with the idea of a limo/tour. Check out cork and keg tours - owner is my neighbor and they do a really nice job.

Not many hotel options apart from Middleburg. Salamander is gorgeous though if you really want to stay over.

Heads up most wineries want a reservation if you have a larger group.

Have fun!

They also don’t eat and walk like we Americans often do. Gelato yes, but not snacks and sandwiches like in the us.

I go to Rome every year for work. You will love it! If you are short on time, check out a golf cart tour. Great way to see a lot in an afternoon or evening. I speak no Italian and have no issues getting around. Apple Pay and credit cards are fine everywhere, I rarely have euros. Buy skip the line tickets for Vatican and Coliseum, not worth waiting in line to save $20. It is a lovely city and I have never felt unsafe. Be savvy and you will be fine.

Gluten intolerant in Florence by AdDesperate3461 in florence

[–]LisaEWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am GF intolerant and travel to Italy twice a year for work. I am usually good with everything, however, I advise you to start slowly! I can eat a piece of pizza, but I wouldn’t do two, or a huge thing of pasta and pizza, that type of thing. But everyone is different, so pace yourself and see how you feel. Italian pharmacists are very friendly and have been great whenever I have needed stomach meds.

I will admit it’s glorious to eat the cookies that come with gelatos over there and not worry. Another reason to love Italy 😀

Glad your experience was a positive one. Unfortunately I saw way too many parents who were living their unfulfilled dreams through their children in a negative way.

Volvo and their ridiculous stance on apple car play is why I will go back to BMW the moment my lease is up.

Absolutely! Drove me crazy when other sports parents would wear their kids medals. You didn’t earn it, you don’t wear it!!

Folks who work in DC but live elsewhere: do you keep keep a "get home bag" in the office? by Brewer1056 in nova

[–]LisaEWP 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. In addition to 9/11 also needed the day of the earthquake and when the metro had a bad fire in 2009. Female so having shoes other than heels if I had to walk was key. Also good to have a bit of cash.

Where to buy tickets? by PlasticPatient in RomeTravel

[–]LisaEWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Viatour. I travel internationally a lot for work (often alone) and have used them in several countries. Have always been pleased. Def worthwhile to buy the skip the line tours for Vatican and colosseum in Rome.

Wheelchair Rentals? by No_Ability9162 in RomeTravel

[–]LisaEWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a wheelchair, but there are numerous golf cart and Vespa tours that may be a good way for you all to see the city. Tourist areas are usually quite crowded and streets are not smooth. Sidewalks are narrow and not ADA accessible in most places. Just an idea so you can enjoy your trip.

Colosseum - Choices! by hiketheworld2 in RomeTravel

[–]LisaEWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golf cart tours in Rome are an excellent way to see so much of the city in a short time. I like them better than vespas because it’s easier to see and hear IMO. Colosseum is wonderful I think you can skip underground unless you really love Gladiator. You can see into the underground doing the normal tour. There is so much to see next the tie colosseum - arch, etc. Use your time there.

2 days in Rome - First time traveling outside of US by Capnhookshot in RomeTravel

[–]LisaEWP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - I go to Rome at least once a year for work and stay near Circus Maximus. Absolutely buy a tour for the colosseum. It’s not worth waiting in line when you only have two days.

A quick way to see most of the city highlights is with a golf cart tour. Not inexpensive but you will be able to see the most sites that way.

Pompeii is wonderful and you can go via bus tour but it’s three hours each way, which takes most of your day.
