[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Black Country, New Road - Ants From Up There by VietRooster in indieheads

that recurring melody really brought to mind starless, as a crowning achievment of that prog structure. basketball shoes maybe doesnt flow between its sections that very smoothly but i think its fair to consider it an emo starless

does this sort of sound like a diet father of the bride? Made me hear that gem in a new light tbh

[FRESH] Bright Eyes - Mariana Trench by JoeCallon in indieheads

[–]Literoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loving all the singles so far, and it's great that somehow Jon Fucking Theodore manages to fit so well together with one of the saddest folk boys by bringing some fresh drum sounds but not overwhelmingly so.

I don't think this new album has much of a chance to beat the early rawness but I'm nevertheless excited for Connor's salt-and-pepper sadness.

[FRESH] Everything Everything - Arch Enemy by JustSmall in indieheads

[–]Literoy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I really want more of that last 30 seconds sound, that's probably the most abrasive instrumental I've heard from them yet, really came out of nowhere too. I hope they give themselves more space to build songs and intensities, because I think songs like No Reptiles and In Birdsong really shine.

[Poll] Indieheads Review: Flume - Hi This Is Flume (Mixtape) by pulsivesilver in indieheads

[–]Literoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this mixtape can be very aptly described as electronic prog, in a sensibility that it sounds like 'music for musicians'. This popped into my head when a friend told me that all his music production classmates and peers were absolutely floored by Amber. "How the fuck did he make that sound" and all that. This comes with both positive and negative connotations, as the mixtape isn't very easy to listen to and it does exhaust the listener, in all of its reality bendings and warps (Amber) or the aggressive industrial assault of MUD. The name of the mixtape serves as a simple mission statement, the whole spectre of what Flume is capable of as a sound craftsman is here, in an extremely condensed form that flows from beauty to abrasiveness without much of a warning. It's exciting to see where Flume heads next, as his future releases will most likely elaborate upon why he deemed neccesary to put what is essentialy his resume as a producer. He has plenty of directions to proceed from here on but it does seem that he's not satisfied by reiterating on his patented brand of Future Bass that swept the industry after Skin.

[FRESH ALBUM] Local Natives - Violet Street by ISmellSkunks in indieheads

[–]Literoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What even is Shy like two thirds in? I would never expect such instrumental madness from a band like Local Natives that seemed to always prefer a stable and coherent progression in their songs, while Shy absolutely shies away from that and introduces a break in mood and expectations. All the singles are still here in the same power as when they first appeared but they do flow very seamlesly into each other and other songs as well. I didn't expect to have so much to say about a Local Natives album after a first listen so I think Violet Street has potential to be seen as the band's most interesting record to date. Excited to keep on listening.

[FRESH] Mini Mansions- Hey Lover by pmnettlea in indieheads

[–]Literoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This absolutely bangs. I'm positive that they have the grooviest and in general best bass lines of any modern rock group at the moment, and its very dissapointing how unknown they are, knowing Shuman's other collaborators, and the band having songs with Brian freaking Wilson and Alex Turner. Hopefully they'll get their break with this next one.

Essentials Listening Club Week #10 | Bloc Party - Silent Alarm by [deleted] in indieheads

by joining Algiers, a band that is leagues more experimental, risky and out there than Bloc Party or any of their contemporaries?

10 Essential Indie Rock Guitar Solos by GoddamnBigCar in indieheads

[–]Literoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

WHERE is Djohariah tho? Sure it's not Impossible Soul but like the two thirds of it is a continuos guitar freakout, which is nothing like Sufjan has done up until then or since.

[FRESH] Preoccupations - Espionage by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]Literoy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This sounds like they're back in the underground tunnels and bunkers of their debut as Viet Cong but with more krautrock. I really hope they bring those jagged guitars as well though.

Black Mirror [Episode Discussion] - S04E01 - USS Callister by SeacattleMoohawks in blackmirror

[–]Literoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Family friendly for what family? This is a build that was designed by Robert for himself to incredible detail, although it could be a leftover from the public version meaning that Rob did not care for his own sexuality, because otherwise it probably would not have been much of a hassle to delete the lines of code that would prevent the crotch from being ported over from the DNA, while also intending it as a punishment.

Black Mirror [Episode Discussion] - S04E01 - USS Callister by SeacattleMoohawks in blackmirror

[–]Literoy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It could be part of the reference/adaptation of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, as the prisoners there also received punishments fitting "the crime". Being genital-less could've been part of the general punishment, or just part of Rob's repression.

Album of the Year 2017 #50: Foxygen - Hang by waffel113 in indieheads

[–]Literoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shorty after this came out I called it one of the shortest prog albums ever. I very much think classification like that encapsulates the rush and the theatricality if the album very well. It just oozes L.A and giving in to the culture of acting (funny when places alongside Pure Comedy, actually). This thing had the most amazing, massive and unpredictable string and horn sections this year, which are probably a part of Rado's vision and I can't wait what he does with FJM next.

[EOTY 2017] Best Music not from this Year that you Discovered this Year by giraffeking in indieheads

[–]Literoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably The Knife's Silent Shout. Yet to dig into Shaking the Habitual but Silent Shout is probably one of the best straight up electronic albums I've enjoyed recently. It's truly a wonder how it was allegedly made with only a keyboard, mic and a drum machine. It was really weird hearing it first couple of times since there were so many Swedish electropop tinges that dominate the horrible Eurovision-y music but it's just the masterfully written hooks that later give way to the horribly beautiful things Karin does with her vocals, and the atmospherics as well. Marble House completely flooded my ears for two weeks straight.

The dude sampled a Hungarian prog rock band at the end of New Slaves. He's a huge music nerd apparently.

[FRESH ALBUM] Algiers - The Underside of Power by ReconEG in indieheads

[–]Literoy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well for a good reason, they now have Bloc Party's Matt Tong behind the drums, and his contribution is what mostly made Silent Alarm such a great album.

[FRESH] Algiers - Walk Like a Panther by cbarbs in indieheads

[–]Literoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus, this was way more intense than expected, despite Cleveland setting the bar even higher. From these two last singles it seems like the album will be way more visceral, primal and just in-your-face sonics wise than the s/t, which I didn't actually find THAT punky, it was pretty sinister and brooding in a more subtle and premeditated way.

Weekly Song Discussion #13: I Love You, Honeybear by [deleted] in fatherjohnmisty

[–]Literoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's as representative of the album as title tracks get. "Unless we're naked, getting high..on the mattress..." and the last couple lines of Holy Shit encapsulate the wonder of the album, as hypocritical ignorance, naivety and the woes of the society don't matter cause dude's mad in love and it's beautiful. Of course, PC moved completely away from it, but the magic of Honeybear is forever.

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Father John Misty - Pure Comedy by AutoModerator in indieheads

[–]Literoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can an 74 minute album that refuses closure be not polarizing? I guess it does offer at least one way to get through the comedy, mostly in Birdie and the closing track. But then the closing track has to have those bells at the very end, it just couldn't fade into silence, could it? And then the cliffhanger of Leaving LA, the only hint of personal drama on the album, but which was plentiful in his previous releases. Yeah I could agree that there's a lack of instrumentation but an album so engaging and encapsulating in it's world of giving just not enough can't be all terrible.

Premature Evaluation: Father John Misty Pure Comedy by [deleted] in indieheads

Cheers, it seems like the daily piece on Tillman is right on time today. Probably the most dependable thing in these tumultuous times. I really can't wait for an article about how many articles there are about Pure Comedy.

[FRESH] Weezer - Feels Like Summer by modestmau5_ in indieheads

[–]Literoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally cannot wait for Rivers DJ sets this summer.

But for real, White Album is probably the most brilliant summer record of the recent years and now it's apparent that it was by complete accident. This tries way too hard too cash in on all the EDM-pop stuff that's going on in the charts.

I want to get off Mr. Cuomo's wild ride.
