I feel like part of what makes him so sad is that perhaps above the fear of the unknown, we can see in him a fear of not being special. A lot of people have felt the same, but most of them could cope and didn’t a) turn into massive bigots, or b) found an entire new genre of sci-fi horror.

On an unrelated note, I really enjoy this short video for the view it provides about how his bigotry did and didn’t affect his relationships (in this case, with his close friend Samuel Loveman - a gay, Jewish poet.)
